I'm fairly new to SWG and have just reached Novice CH as well as Novice Rifleman. I'm curious to know your thoughts on the viability of CH/Rifle for PvE and PvP compared to say CH/Fencer. As a wookie I'm interested in a mildly RPish character, thus my lean towards Rifle(bowcaster) and Fencer(Ryyk). It seems that Fencer would be a good choice due to wookie high health, strength and constitution. As a Rifleman I find my Mind pool drains very fast.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

ok as a Zabrak MRifle/MCH it was a blast... way back when you had to be a CH to use a rifle, but those days are long gone...

if you are looking for a roleplaying the bowcaster is a very weak rifle...

fencer is a weak damage profession, it has great defences but the attacks are really weak...

in the state the game is in now, with 2400+ buffs to all heath and action stats... you can move everything to your mind/focus/willpower (entertainer buffs only double those stats)... because its your weakest stat (can't be easily be healed)... this will become even more apparent PvP casu its the stat the will be targeted 95% of the time in any PvP encounter...

just keep (BE)brandy, canape, and asheria (sp) adds to focus on you... with a crate of moun for a back up... get your focus above 1600 (after encumberance) and you can spam away without feeling it (most chefs offer some singles of each along with the crates, so buy the singles first)... plus with you haveing pets, if you do it correcty 90% of the time PvE you really won't need armor... this is expensive at first... so i'd sugest lookin on your galixies trade forums and see if any meat/hide are going for 30+ cpu (even better if you get a great shift of dant herb meat for 100+ cpu)... goto that planet and harvest as much of it as you can... you should be able to make a nice profit...

if you choose to go the fencer route i can't give much advice there (never tired it out)... but do what you wanna do... to get good at PvP you are gonna lose alot at first... so find a group of ppl in your faction and learn from them... get into no DB duels, and after its over look over the combat tab and see what worked and what didn't... ask about PvP templates... MCH is very weak PvP...

hope this makes sence to you...

Thanks for the advice guys. Now, from what I've seen it seems as if Rifle is all mind pool, Carbine is action with pistol being health. With melee Fencer is health. Would it be prudent to stick with a health based combat pool due to how high Wookies Health/strength/constitution is as it would allow me to make the most out of the wookies strengths?

As for the bowcaster, I've already started to notice how much weaker it is than the T21 and must say I'm disappointed there aren't ways to modify a weapons stats such as armour piercing.

Ive done Rifleman but as a human and only in PvE, I dont PvP much. It is a fun combo with CH especially early on in your rifle skills. A pet will keep the mobs off of you and let you live to fight another day. The only problem I had with the combo is at a certain skill level you will no longer need the pets to help you fight. At that point you need to like the profession in order to keep it. I havent done fencer but I am doing swords and the pros and cons are similar to rifles. It's great in the beginning but once you reallyget into the combat profession CH becomes less and less of a requirement and more of a gameplay choice. I wanted the slower pace that comes with looking for pets to tame,so it is a good fit for me. It might just take some playing time to figure out if it is the way you want to go.

Oh and you might want tothink about migrating your stats to the mind pool and carrying brandy everywhere if you stay with rifles. I migrated everything to mind and could spam specials for as long as I needed to, but the down side is that I have to play buffed 24/7 or I die. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

its all in how you want to play... if you don't want to use buffs thats the only way the wookies streanghs will be notaceable... but it'll be instant death in PvP

quick breakdown...

pistols/fencer use the heath substats... weakest damage output/ moderate HAM useage

carbines/polearms use the action pools... moderate damage/ huge HAM cost

rifles/swords use mind pool... highest damage/high HAM cost

there is no best template, it depends on the person... do what you find fun... if you try something and don't like it you can always change...

I am pretty new myself and I have the same template (Rifle/CH) and I like it. I play unbuffed most of the time and just take a swig of brandy when I hunt. I just recently mastered rifles (CH 4/4/2/4) and strafe shot2 is my new best friend. I like playing solo a lot, so I have my pets tank for me while I mow down a lair, so I don't use armor either. I'm just extra careful of creatures not aggroing on me and I rarely die. In the end it's just personal preference. This is the template I'm going to be playing for a while til I get bored. The only thing that worries me now is the FS Skill Points I have to give up for opening my 2nd slot, which supposedly you don't get back, since you can't surrender FS skills. So I'll either have to redo the same template on the 2nd char or just not go for Jedi at all, or do the FS grind twice (yay!).

I have been a MCH/MR wookie for quite some time now, and enjoy that template better than pistols or commando and MCH. While leveling up, I loved the fact that I didn't have to get buffed and go through tons of armor just to stay alive. Buffs and armor certainly do help and make it easier; they are not required as a CH. With balanced stats and good brandy, there is no need to worry about the mind. Once you reach master that will change a little. You will need to either get buffed or carry around some good stims as you will blow through health and action fast (mind is still not a worry with good brandy). I haven't started to pvp yet, so I can't help you there. I've been waiting for vitality loss during pvp to be removed and now fixed. Hope that helps.

as a BH/Pistoleer/CH i can say my pistols are much, much heavier on my action than health. I played w/ rifles for a bit but I like to harvest what I kill and all that run-up, harvest, run back, shoot, run up was a pain. plus i think it's more fun to be 'in the action' rather than hanging out at 50m +. However, rifles are the most powerful ranged weapon in the game, the dxr6 is INSANE, so you will at very least be powerful. pistols look silly in a wookie's paws as well....

Think about 2h swords instead of fencer, arguably it's the best melee profession (TKM is probably a bit stronger but it's close...) you get very good area attacks and head hits, and a wookie deserves a big, 2handed sword. Lastly, i think the power hammer, staple of the swordsman, is a heavy health hitter, so you'll use those big wookiee health stats to your advantage.

I don't think there is a problem with your template but there is one thing to keep in mind. The pets that you will be using do most of their damage to the health bar, not action or mind. At one point I had decided to work on my rifleman skills, but when I saw that my two pets were outdamaging me, it just didn't seem to make sense to be anything other than a pistoleer.

I have never officially measured it, but I would say that pets, on average, do about 60% of their damage to the health bar, 30% to the action bar, and 10% to the mind bar.

Now, a master rifleman does massive damage, so this may not be an issue for you but if you're going to just dabble in rifles, you may find that pistols would be much more efficient to go along with your pets.

Heck Yeah!

Hound,

You hit it right on the head, the pets are kinetic damage dealers only, so find a profession that hits the health bar.

I am MCH/BH and using the pistol hits the same bar as my pets. The LLC seems to be random. One time it will take out the Action the next time the Health bar.

....and then no matter how hard we get nerfed, we still keep CH because we are still some of the coolest characters on the game.

why anyone would want to dabble in rifles is really beyond me... its truely one profession where the differance between 4/4/4/4 and master is huge... also all non-HAM specific shots hit 60/30/10 health/action/mind... once you get a decent AoE you'll probably end up useing that more than a single mob HAMshot... most mid lvl mobs are social so wait till they agro your pet and the fire away with your AoE... you will by far outdamage your pets then...

it also boils down to your speed of shooting too... if you go the melee route, a speed capped pikeman will outdamage a speed capped swordsman depending on the blast resists... it really makes a swordsman mad when you get looting rights to something... and the best part is you didn't have to pay anything for your weapon, it was looted =P... but pikes suck PvP cept for thier dots...

I'm trying to decide what template to grind and any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance for your answers. Here is what I was thinking....

15 points gone in FS quest boxes.

Enhancer 4/0/0/2 for FR2 andChannel Force

LS 4/0/4/4 Flurry and Dervish

Healing 4/4/0/4Heal states, Heal Damage

Defender 4/4/0/0 For melee and ranged defenses

250 points used.

Is this to spread out? I would like to be able to play my jedi in PVE as well as some PVP. I would also like to be able to get away when the numbers say it's stupid to fight.

Id go 2004 Enhancer instead of 4002. Forcerun2 is worthless for combat but i guess its good for running away now, i dont know... i just think that forcemeditate is a more valuable skill. Without forcemeditate you're going to spend a lot of time just waiting for force to regen, guess its not a big deal since youre going to be running with FR2 alot You also pick up ForceShield2... just in case someone decides to get Master powers and actually fight with them... if that ever happens.

You mentioned 15 points in FS quest boxes, didnt you mean 24?
