Thread: New FAQ for the CH Profession

Hey everyone. The old FAQ was getting kind of dated, so it seems like a good idea to get a new one started with more current information. I thought I'd get the ball rolling with this post.

If you know of a non-exploit tip, or a question that comes up a lot... feel free to post it (and the answer) here. If you're looking for information, post a question for others to answer. Here are a few to get things started:

Q: How do I name my pet?

A: By training it four different commands that start with the same word (i.e. "Fido follow," "Fido attack," "Fido group," "Fido store"). At this point, the pet will learn that you want its name to be "Fido," and you'll get a little message ("Fido? Fido?") to confirm that the name has been changed.

Q: Why can't I name this pet? I've named things before, but something is wrong this time.

A: There is a name filter in place for pet names, just as there is one for player character names. The filter for pets doesn't give you any visible feedback, though. If it doesn't like the name, it'll just refuse to change it. If you're having trouble getting a pet to accept a name, try a few variations that the filter might be more likely to accept. It's very picky about character names from the Star Wars fiction, even when they are used as part of a larger word.

Q: Do I have to give pets commands by speaking out loud? I don't want to annoy people by spamming commands.

A: In addition to normal speech, you can use /tellpet to silently give commands to all of your currently active pets. For example "/tellpet attack" will cause any of your active pets who respond to the word "attack" to do so. This works over a long distance than /say or /shout, and can be very handy (especially in your own customized macros). There seems to be a bug with /tellpet and single letter commands, though, so it is advisable to give your pets commands that are more than one character long.

first!

while i've established that, i should post a question/answer.

Q: I cannot tame XXXXX animal, even though my max level is sufficient!

A: You cannot garuntee you'll be able to capture an animal just because you have a qualifying level. Try climbing higher in the taming tree, or obtaining taming bonus clothing.

Please try to stay on topic. I'd like this to become a helpful resource for new people. I'm more than happy to read your discussions and gameplay concerns in other threads.

Do I have to give pets commands by speaking out loud? I don't want to annoy people by spamming commands.

When using /tellpet in a macro, include /echo [message] to give yourself some feedback, as tellpet will not display anything. Color codes can make the message stand better.

Q: How do I heal my pet's damage/wounds?
A:
You can heal all Health and Action wounds by feeding your pet from the radial. They will eat (but not drink) anything you can: foraged, artisan or chef foods and even spices. Mind wounds, and damage, is healed when your pet performs tricks. Medic stims will heal a pet like anyone else. Pet stims heal all the HAM bars and are obtainable from BEs.

well, it seems to me that the number one most common question is "what's the best pet at XXX level?"

the answer is almost always "a BE made pet, wild ones have inferior stats at the same level as BE pets"

this is almost universally true, the only time it isn't is with regard to rares. some rares have special attacks not available on BE pets (the rare pet's resists are worse than the BE pets though, it's only the special attacks that make them interesting)

For those that don't know and i know for a fact many dont. there is a way to make your pet "hold" the thing you are attacking. to do this simply make a macro that says /tellpet kill, kill being your attack command. then go to the options menu and go to controls and keymap. then go to custom and find the macro you just made and bind it to a free key on the keyboard. when you send your pet in to attack something keep hitting your attack command and spamming attack. doing this will insure your pet will make sure your target stays in one spot and wont run all over the place. hope that helps you guys.

Everyone has said that at CH level 1100, the GW and GSP are the best you can tame. I was with a master scout last night who also had CH 1100 and said he can't tame anything above a 17. Was there a new patch or soemthing. (He was also a wookie).

Jerguar, that was under the old pre-patch system. Taming levels are a lot more fluid now.

Everytime I try to transfer a pet to my non CH friend we get an error message that says he has too many pets.

~ Non CH folks can only control up to lvl 10 critters. If the pet is lvl 10 or under and you are getting this message it is because it is an agressive critter. Bio Engineers can make pets that seem like they would be perfectly good for non CH use, but if they are in an agro skin (such as a woolamander) the attempted transfer/trade will return a rather doubious error message saying the person has too many pets.

Q: How can I tell which creatures are tameable?

A: Only baby animals in the wild (those with (baby) at the end of their name) and Bio-Engineered pet deeds are tameable. Non-baby wild creatures are not. The "tame" option will only appear on the radial menu for a baby creature if you have at least a 15% chance of success. This is impacted by the Difficulty level of the creature, which CH skills you currently have, whether or not your character is a Wookiee, and whether you're using any clothing or food buffs with taming bonuses on them.

Q: Can I swap pets in a one-for-one trade with another player if I'm at my pet storage limit?

A: No. If you currently have your maximum allowed number of stored pets (which is determined by your CH skills), you must clear room BEFORE trading for another. If you attempt to do a one-for-one trade (i.e. you put a pet in the trade window and your partner puts a pet in the trade window), the trade will fail. You must make room before attempting to trade.

Question: What boxes do I have to get to control XX Creature Level?

Answer: Non-creature handlers can automatically control up to a Level 10 non-aggressive creature. For each box you gain in creature handling, add +2 to the creature level. Example: a 1/1/1/1 CH could control up to a CL 20 pet (the non-CH 10, +2 for Novice, +2 for each of the1/1/1/1). Aggressive pets are counted separately, and require specific boxes that grant control of vicious creatures, which can be seen in the skill tree for your character. Note that wookiees atuomatically gain bonuses for animal handling.
