Thread: The real 'Problem' with Creature Handler

I actually don't think that there's such a huge problem with Ch that can't be fixed by better creatures. The real problem is not with the CHs themselves, but rather a greater problem with two things that have become very significant.

1)Armor. Certain varieties are too effective.

2)BUFFING. Biggest problem in the game, and, IMO, headed for a huge nerf.

Buffing completely destroys the difficulty of the game, makes various professions useless (including CH), and, in combination with armor, can turn any character into a terrifying tank. It allows combat professions to be mastered in days. Something has to be done about this. The problem with Ch is that creatures can't be buffed like players can, and thus are simply not as useful in combat. The two ways to deal with this are

1)allow better creature buffs (yeah right) or

2)Weaken existing buffs (by about 65%).

The only things I'd like to see in CH are combat effects which enhance creatures in new ways: faster attacks, more damage, etc. as global effects applied to all pets when used. The effect, however, cannot be overwhelming. Additionally, there should be resist bonuses to creatures in use, much like combat professions get resistances to stun/dizzy/whatever.

THAT IS ALL

Also, sorry if anybody else said this already, but I am lazy and didn't want to slog through the whole archive

now I'm very sympathetic to the creature handler's plight....

but a 65% buff nerf is NOT the answer:

1) in PVP I'm still going to kill your pet in incredibly short order (after I kill you , of course) even if I have no buff at all.

2) in PVE it would shoot CH rightback to the top, and then more nerf pain would come to you.

I think what would really help for PvP would be to take away the 75% dmg reduction for pets.

As far as PvE, if pets just followed attack commands better and didnt run all over the place (perhaps a "stand-and-fight" command) then I'd probably still be a CH

I agree with what you are saying here but I would still like to see the max pet lvl raised a bit. Just to like 90-100 for a master ch. I mean with the nurfs done to the pets I dont think even having 2 rancors out would be nearly as effective and uber as it was before the nerf. This would also allow you to use more then one good pet at a time and could at least provide us a bit more tanking ability for hunting. I mean that way maybe a master ch could actually solo a rancor lair like other eleate combat professions can.

I agree. Any melee class is gonna walk all over you and your pet. Pistoleer and CH just don't cut it. I found that out the hard way through grueling PVP deaths and pet vitality loss. Now that I'm a TKM I can see that there is a world of difference. The real problem is the devs don't want CH being a fighting class. CH is a support class right now. I fought for months on this forum to get them to change it to a fighting class, but it fell on deaf ears. Here's my advice... if you want to be more powerful, drop CH and go for something that is more powerful. Even without buffs most melee classes will drop you and your pets lickety split because the damage is just too immense and the stat modifiers work in the favor of the melee class. As a TKM, I have my own buff (powerboost), so it wouldn't make any difference. People are going to flock to the most powerful templates they can because the powergamers rule the PVP world and you can't compete without a good template. Even with TKM, I have a hard time because of kinetic armor and people with mind shot can drain me in a few shots. Sure, it would be nice to eliminate buffs. I was against them from the beginning because they don't allow for a true representation of a character's abilties. Having drugs, food and buffs pretty much brings too many factors into the mix and reduces PVP to who has the best resists rather than who has skill. It's sad, but there's nothing we can do about it. As a former CH, I feel your pain and when people told me CH sucked I scoffed at them, but in the end I was forced to concede and I haven't looked back. If you're going to PVP you should quit CH and go for something more powerful, or you'll just be beating your head against a wall and it'll cause you more pain than any one person should have to bear. I'm speaking as a CH who's been there, not as a TKM uber wannabe.

I keep saying this to people BE PROUD OF BEING A CREATURE HANDLER. It is a cool profession to have, we got the coolest pets, we can have pets BE can't make and what is cooler than having a crystal snake by your side

And if people just want to fight PvP then my advice would be, be a combat class. But I do think when CHs are on planets like dathomir Pets should rule but has I have found out to many times groups just don't want a CH and his rancor inthier group.

And that is were TKM masters rule (flooring a bull rancor in 8 seconds) what are the dev thinking off

Going against the grain seems to be my nature, but don't get me wrong. I'm a dedicated MCH and I've considered picking up some other combat class, but I keep being reminded of the nature of MMORPGs and SWG specifically. People will gravitate to the Power Template du jour everytime. And after a while the nerfs will come in and everyone that flocked to TKA will throw up their arms and cry to "fix" them again. Heck, that's how they ended up as powerful as they are now.

More importantly, SWG has always said their focus is players grouping and interacting. So a CH running about solo with his tiny army of pets isn't what they want either. I'm still hoping for a middle ground. One thing that helps is that so many of the wild creatures have been nerfed along with the pets. Granted this is probably because so many more wild creatures can spawn as babies now. I really miss my Graul Mauler's armor 1 and 75% kinetic resistance. But there's not much I run across that even has armor anymore, much less a 75% resistance in anything.

That is, unless, you look at BE pets. Suddenly all that armor and those high resistances are back. But only in "store-bought pets". Which again, is part of SWG's design doc about players interacting with players. While they may cost a little more, they also don't wear out as quickly as weapons unless you're still using your pets in PVP. And my 700k sitting in the bank refutes the argument that a MCH/Pistoleer can't make money. The issue isn't that we can't make money. What people point out is that we can't make money solely as CH.

the only answer now is to raise cl to 100 and give chs back medium armor pets, give pets defences, make large pets very hard to posture change and knock down, and increase pet dmg dramatically. its the only way to get us any where near viable.

The "real" problem with CH was that out of the box it worked as an elite profession, and all the other elite professions were broken.

So, in addition to fixing the others, CH had to be made less effective.

The real problem is that this game was released too early, and the devs who have brains were transferred to SE leaving us with the meatlumps we've got now.

First off I somewhat agree that the availability of buffs has skewed the difficulty of the game.

But if you come in here and scream nerf anything I will personally castrate you!!!

I am so sick of hearing people say nerf things. That is communist doctrine at it's purest and why communtim is failing. In english communist doctrine is Beat down the Jonses, Capitalist doctrine is keep up with the Jonses.

This game has the biggest bunch of Communist doctrine thinkers I have ever seen for a Capitalist society.

How about instead of crying nerf, say boost us up to be equal.

Get rid of the 75% damage loss or give our creatures the same PvP bonuses we get.

There is that so hard?

The light at the end of the tunnel. With the SE released at whatever point that may be, we might actually see a host of balance changes. If they handle this at all like they did EQ, every profession can benefit from an expansion.

Of course, it'll be buggy as hell ontop of old bugs ontop of engine bugs ontop of Windows bugs ontop of DOS bugs ontop of a bug that says 1=2, but we've come to accept that.

I think I need to cry.

Fix the Autostore bug, that my No.1 issue.

Fix pets freezing in combat as enemy suddenly aggroes you.

Back in the great CH nerf when they 'rebalanced' (to use the term loosely) all the creatures' stats. Instead of lowering or removing their stats altogether and raising their levels, they should have only raised the Creature Levels and left their stats alone (What's the point of reducing a GSP's 65%Kinetic and Light Armor to 35% Kinetic and No Armor and then raising it's Creature Level from 23-25? = Dabblers can't have good pets and neither can you).

GSPs never had light armor, Grand Wrix did have light armor, though...but lower kinetic resist, and 100% heat resist.

Both had their CL raised and their effectiveness reduced.

Graul Maulers, had their stats been lefte unchanged, should have been elevated to a minimum of CL 45. As it was, they were upped in CL and were still nerfed in stats.

The problem with CL, and this has been pointed out again and again, is that it is keyed on damage dealing and not the ability to absorb damage, which is what creatures bring to the combat table.

One thing that SOE eventually got right with EverQuest was the fact that higher level buffs could only stick to higher level people. This game is way too easy if you can schmooze someone into powerlevlling you. Hopefully they can fix it to where only masters can get, eat, drink, spice master levels foods. Everything should not be available to everyone.
