FINALLY. A rare tamable worth noting in story form.
Almost a week of hitting the missions on Endor, and nothing. Then on the way back to Research Outpost, my wife and I spotted a large screecher lair. Had 4 adults. We had two Kimos. I said we could take them. And we did. Tapped the lair. EIGHT adults spawned. My wife said 'uhhhhh'. I told her to wait. Still no babies. Then I just finally said to h*ll with this and sent my lvl 58 poison kimo into the fray.
Foolish.
Even my poison Kimo couldn't withstand all of them. My powered up, sliced Krayt Laser couldn't strafe2 enough of them dead. Luckily, my Kimo got 4 of them away from the original 8 and began running away with them from the lair. I chased and chased them for 200m and even got turned around and lost the original position of the nest. I was diseased, and wound up with two of them on my tail. I ran, but to no avail. Plague strike is fatal if it's done on you twice by two creatures ....I saw "You have been diseased" about 4 times in a row as I fell (along with the fact that as a rifleman, most of your stats are devoted to mind). I was slain, and marked the waypoint.
Surprisingly, my Kimo did not get incapped. I regrouped him at the original position, patched him up, and did not wait for my wife to get back. I was bloodthirsty as this point. 5 Mantirgrues remained. I took some Accargam, Won Won and Vasarian Brandy, sent the healed Kimo back in and blasted them. More kept spawning even though the lair had healed and I had NOT tapped it again yet. One. And another, and another. 5 originals to kill plus 5 more that would spawn just before I would kill the previous one.
By this point my stat pools were drained, as was my will. I took a deep breath, stood 64m from the lair, and tapped it, then moved to 70m and remained masked. I waited, and watched my radar as the familiar blips began to appear. Red dot.....red dot......red dot.....red dot......red dot........red dot...................red dot.......
........red dot.......
I was ticked. 4 days of continuous hunting, no babies. I was telling my wife that I was about to open my toolkit to pitch a camp, heal up and go home, and I....
.....YELLOW DOT......
There it was. In a sea of 8 adults. I was happier than a corellian butterfly on bantha poodoo. Then the realization hits me. $#&@!!!! There's no way I can get this baby with all those adults around it. What're the odds? EIGHT adults, at least ONE is going to detect me.....
...then in my self-doubt, the 'flock' began to move, and separate on my radar. The yellow dot moved to the left, with only two red dots moving alongside it. GOOD. That gave me better odds, at least. I knew one thing:
I was going to get this baby, or die trying.
The baby and the adults were moving slowly to the left, so I approached from the far left, outflanking the spawn and the sea of red that had come out of that nest, a little too excited for my own good......
Detected. Crud.
Stopped at 60m. Didn't move a muscle. The baby and the two adults continued moving away. I finally was able to remask 30 seconds (an eternity) later and start walking again. By this point the two adult screechers and the baby were completely broken away from the lair.
I circled round slowly, edging in baby steps towards my target, 20m now. DETECTED. #$#*@*#@!!!!!!!!! SO CLOSE!!!!!!!
I stand perfectly still. I don't move a muscle. I can feel the sweat beginning to bead up on my forehead.
Masked again. Closed the last 10m between me and the baby. I didn't CARE at this point. I slammed my mouse button down on the /tame macro.
"Steady, Don't Be blah blah, etc." Failed. Grrrrrrrrr
Remasked between first and 2nd tame.....
"Good, Er Boy?, etc.." Failed. DETECTED.........AGRO
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Luckily, I was disarmed and had no unarmed exp, so all I did was smack thescreechera bit......I slapped the burst run button and hit the trail. By my gauge, 4 adults and the baby were on my rear end.
It was almost comical at this point.I don't even know what direction I ran, I just made sure it was in a straight line, and made sure I kept the baby targeted......I thought to myself, "There's no chance".....but I kept running. Tom Cruise's words from Minority Report kept running through my mind...."Everybody runs".
One by one, the adults pursuing me dropped their chase. The baby was still on me.
At last, well over 200m away from the lair and 90m from the infant, the baby stops. It is retreating back towards the lair with one adult by its side.
I still had a chance....and I was still burstrunning.
I took off like h*ll back to the baby, and I noticed as I got closer, the adult disappeared! It despawned. At first I'm thinking, YAY! Then I thought, WAIT.....what if the baby despawns too? ARGH...... 50m..........20m.......10m.....5m, slammed down the /tame macro again.
At this point, I'm spent. Fully expecting another agro that I can't run from (because now I've slowed down, because I'm tired), I wait. I mask my scent yet again...................
You have tamed the creature.
I just about fainted.
I finally caught up with my wife, who had a nice camp set up for us. For some reason, I was mixed with relief and triumph, but also depression and regret. Regret knowing that I can probably never use this creature against a formidable opponent. I pull it out, train it in all commands, then begrudingly put it away. It was a bittersweet ending to a rare tamable chase that began 4 days ago, but I got one at last.
