Why do some feel the need to have unarmed moves in smuggler? they say to justify the prerequisite. Hogwash why dose it need justification? look at it in terms of CHARACTER not mechanics, your a fringe type know your way around the streets you can handle yourself in a fight but if bruce lee(or SW equivalent) stood up to fight ya your either a greasy spot on the floor or you run.
DUMP spice, I never quite understood how smugglers became chemists, we ARE bootlegers we move the spice we dont make it, not to mention spice is worthless chef food is better and has no downer. so lets dump spice.
Slice, only smuggler activity we realy have besides FP trade but to buy it from the recuiter is time and cost prohibitive so lets build on the slice.....more stuff to slice, different slice interfaces depending on what your slicing...should be more like a hacker(electronic counter mesures)than a car thief (hotwire) and definitly ablity to slice ( modify) vehicles and Ships (when they go live) for better handling/speed similar to weapons damage/speed
And whats this some of you want us to be theives, stealing from harvesters? OH MY no thats a PIRATE ya see smugglers dont steal we transport.
Once upon a time i had an idea for what to replace spice with but its far to close to bed time to remeber it now wait it come to me now......forgery, fake IDs altering ships IFF codes
Oh yeah and I want hydrospaners I dont know what they could be used for but i want them anyway.

Joe A. Smuggler is delivering his goods.
He gets checked at the door for all known weapons by Mr. Mantana's guards. His Pistol, Cabine and short sword were all confiscated while on the premises.
He makes his way in and makes a successful delivery... On the wayout, he notices a very nice necklace sitting on the desk in a hallway leading towards the exit. He looks around... pauses a second and proceeds to pocket the necklace. A guard did spot this action and comes chasing after him. He calls for backup and has another guard come down the other way of the hall.
Joe A. Smuggler is pinned in... But you know... since Joe has no unarmed skills... there is no way for this smuggler to get out. He might as well give up since he cannot do any unarmed skills. To bad this smuggler cannot fight his way out of a situation.
Unarmed and smuggler goes hand in hand, just like bread and butter.

Joe A. Smuggler shouldn't be pocketing necklaces he sees lying around. He just got paid for a successful delivery, he should be using that for better contacts for better jobs, not stealing and ruining his rep.
So, let's try:
Joe A. Smuggler is making a delivery. He goes into the fancy joint his contact insists on, and his weapons are checked at the door. One of his contact's rival somehow got the skinny on the meet and put a couple of his guys just inside to try and hijack the goods. Joe A. Smuggler, without Unarmed skills, would lose his package, not get paid, and get a bad rep so no more jobs.
Joe A. Smuggler is hanging out in a cantina, looking for a job. It's a rough place and someone who doesn't like him starts in on him. Without Unarmed skills (as this is just a "friendly" discussion and doesn't want to have to run from authorities because this other guy has a problem), Joe A Smuggler gets beat up, looks like a wimp, and gets a bad rep so no more jobs.
Easy.

As for spice and everything else, we hope to have better implementation once the Smuggler revamp hits (whenever that may end up being).

A change in the meaning of certifications would make the underworld tree and the slicing tree - or possibly a forgery tree to replace spice crafting - far more useful. Trouble is, certifications only stand for what you're trained in, not what you're legally allowed to use. Odd that every citizen walks around with military grade weapons.
imho it'd be good to have more of the authorities cracking down, much like stormtroopers are known to do evey now and then; at this point the smuggler's ability to conceal weapons, have sliced there identity codes so they appear to be something far more mundane to a scanner, or even forge datapad entries to state they're certified to pack, really comes into play, and makes them useful for a group of people travelling in town. It also gives the smuggler room to act as a runner of guns or security-grade armour.
I know it's a bit low-fantasy, but some kind of real manifestation of the law and ways to circumvent it would make in-game life more interesting, no?

Perhaps I was not clear I dont dispute that unarmed is a good prerequisite, What i do dispute is that some folks think that because unarmed 4 is a prerequiste that smugglers should be ninjas.
The examples cited by digi and wolfe are both good (some smugglers realy are thieves) and the fact that we have 4 boxes of unarmed means we do have some skill in that area, again a smuggler wont be able to stand against bruce lee.
and in my oppinion smugglers who steal are quite foolish its a good way to ruin your reputation.
gardengoth also good ideas a great further expansion on forgery it would indeed make us more useful to groups.

Oh come on people
My mock situation was nothing that honestly would pertain to in game. I'm sorry but anyone who leaves a nice piece of jewelry in the middle of a hallway with no one directly watching it and no one around... and a guy that runs from the law and does illegal acts is near by is a bad idea.
But yes... the other situations were good descriptions of the necessity for unarmed
