Thread: Mounted Combat Skill

I really like the idea of "mounted combat" where a person can mount thier pet for combat, allowing them to ONLY use the pet for combat. Since the pet would be thier ONLY weapon it could allow that pet to be stronger, and the pet must be mounted to engage in combat. It could be done with exsiting animations or later new animations/ spceials could be added. This would be a MCH level action.
I think it would be wrong to make this a MCH only skill. if it were ever put in I think that if "Mounted Combat" or rather "some specials while mounted combat" were ever to be put in it should be availible to all CHs that would be part of being a CH. But, i do think that as you progress as a CH you would become more adept in fighting while mounted and eventually as a MCH you might be able to use the specials you gain from other professions. Until that point however you would only be able to use the Specials that you gain from being a CH.
some of these specials you could get would be things like Trample or Bucking and you would still be able to use the pets specials while mounted (when you gain the skill as a CH). iseing the specials should come form your ham, since everything else you do comes from them as well.
I can understand not being able to dismount (IF it could lead to exploits, but if the mount isnt able to attack unless mounted then no it dont make sense), or putting a delay in dismounting or mounting while in combat could also make sense. No galloping in combat doesn't make sense since you can burst run in combat and it is essentially the same thing (ok so ones faster then the other).

I think it would have to be set up so that you couldn't attack with a mount for a moment. then dismount quickly, attack with a rifle, then remount quickly, and attack with a pet. The part of the idea is that you are choosing CH as your primary attack, and only CH. If the only thing you are attacking with is a pet then it allows the pet to be stronger and more effective.

It's to prevent kite(sp?) exploits. I think this system is already in place for the current mounts.

This is up for grabs I think it could go either way. There are many ways to implement the system as far as that goes.
Rember that the whole idea here is based on a Mounted Rider on the battle feild type of person. Riders can be a value to a ground force, but they have thier limits. I can deffinitly see a place for a mounted rider type of role for a CH in combat.
I can agree with you here. My primary goal was to give CH a way to be primary combat weapon, or use the traditional way as we know it now. I can see them letting non CH use attacks from novice skill boxes only. However if Ch where to use this skill only as combat I don't think letting them use any other specials would work. Making a very novice mounted combat attack then non-CH can have and CH can use and build on may work better.

Well I think the CH class would only benefit from a greater use of mounts. People go to Droid engineers to get droids, make it so they want to go to CH's to get mounts. Making mounted combat better for all would be better than CH only. Obviously the better creatures CH's can handle would provide better combat options, than the CL10 cap non CH's have.
I agree that making mounts more useful for all would be a good idea. and i agree that mounts need to be more useful. but the point of this is to add something to CHs. CHs would be mounte combat specialists so to speak and would be better at it then the other classes.
I think being able to spam specials but only specials from the marksman boxes would be a good add. Point blank area, overchargeshot, plus the leg/head/body shot specials wouldnt overpower the fact that you are on a mount.Icant tell you how much i disagreewith this, its ridiculousto allow onlymarkmen have specials. If anyonecna use specail while mounted it should be CHs and ONLY CHs. to make it marksmen would he horribly unbalanced, hell making it ranged onlyis unfair, it leaves melees completely out of the picture.people have been fighting with swords and polearms formany many many centuries.Maybe make it tougher to hit or having a higher HAM cost would be a nice way to offset it. this is a good idea if CHs were allowed to use specials while mounted this could work something like doubling the ham cost of a special or somrthing like that.
But right now, mounts are only an oddity or an eccentric way of moving around.
AGREE mounts need to be more then oddities people get so people make comments like "Wow I didn't know we could ride animals in this game."

agree. there should be a time delay if we were to ba able to mount and dismount in combat. this could work like what they just put in for changeing weapons...i think its a 5 second delay or something.

kiteing is already very possible inthis game. and can currently be done with mount, butonly with normal attacks. melees are kited quite often by ranged players all the time trust me it happens to me alot.

Agian I agree that mounted combatants could be viable and valuble in the game. and they should and do have limitaions. in this case a mounted combatant could only use specials with his pet. as it is now normal attacks are possible and no specials this mounted combat would allow a CH to use specials CH only specials while mounts (and maybe some others at master)

Yes, but if you have a combat class AND MCH you should get more/better benefits out of it. Thinking about having more specials work, something like skill mods that allow you to use headshot1 at mountedspecials +10, headshot2 at mountedspecials +20 and so on. And maybe some skill mods that only apply when you are on a mount and that deaktivates other skillmods while being on a mount to prevent defense stackers. mountedblock, mountedevade, accuracy while mounted etc.

Well the idea here is that is would give CH a particualr role in combat not just anyone with Rifle or pistol skills. I think it would be more intresting to see people have to choose to attack from a mount as a primary attack. For instance, when I was watching "A New Hope(SE)" last night there was a scene with Strom Troopers on Dewbacks with large sticks patroling an area looking for R2 and C3PO, so in that sense if a person was a MCH they would have the option to use pets as we currently so now or to be a mounted combatant with different attacks and moves from thier normal comabat skill. If someone is using CH skills as thier ONLY mode of attack it allows for them to be stronger. You can't shoot a rifle and a pistol at the same time, mounted combat should proably be a different attack then your other combat skill.
I'm not opposed, btw, to giving some novice level small bonus to certin few special moves to non-CH while mounted to help make mounts more usefull over all, but he bulk of the idea is for CH.

These mods would have to be small and geared toward non-CH, the reason being if you make it where CH is the perfect skill tree to have with any combat proffesion again, everone will be a CH again. This is why it would have to be a seperate type of attack, a skill to attack from a mount that you only get as a person that spends a lot of SP on CH. Possibly even a stanard weapon or two for instance like a "troop lance" made for PvP, or a "bull whip" for killing creatures. Now with that said given the option between not having the idea happen at all or making it fit into the current set up by giving mounted riders attack bouns or an extra special move I'm going to choose the latter. I tihnk to keep it legit these mods and skills would only be very effective for a MCH, to prevent dabblers, explotiers ect. So bottom line if you're a non-CH you get a tiny bonus for being mounted or possibly a crowed controll type of move, if your working toward master CH you could end up being something to worry about on a feild of combat. Mounted troops and ground troops have had a long standing relationship in combat why not continue that for SWG?
