Thread: Discussion Topic: Know your Role
hulleman wrote:I chose to be a Creature Handler since I love the aspect of controlling creatures, both powerful and for fun. I have a few small pets that I would like to build some small house or home for in or outside my house. I often go hunt in the wild with my stronger pets collecting hide, bone and meat for getting a good income. I often do train other pets. Mostly I name them and give them mount. I am really baffled by how often master creature handlers give people pets with lousy commands. Attack = a is not good. The /tellpet command is not functional with one word commands and thus you cannot make a macro like this. /Say Go get him boy; /tellpet attack. Or something else. Tellpet also works much better than shouting. I therefore often rename pet commands and learn people how to use them and try to roleplay my part as a creature handler. This is best done in newbie locations since the "grinding" hell or "solo-group" hell we find where most play cannot support roleplaying. The setting sucks at such locations. I find my role in this game is a very little one indeed since none want me in groups to tank. None want me in groups for I steal their experience. Lol as I could. None want me in groups for I lag them up. No I do not .. I never use commands that you hear moron. And finally I do not want to be in a group with people that want me in it for better exp and then leave me to finish their mission alone. ?!?So a change can only do good. We as a profession have been revamped ... I wonder when we can see that take effect for all the others?I would dearly like to have a tag on the pets as this was trained by Sior Draal Master Creature Handler. That pet was made bye Hugh Lear Master Bio Engineer. That would enhance our role as pet people. Also a place to store them in house like the zoo thing people have been talking about. Also a possability to sell them from there. To be able to enhance pets with commands or with bio engineered stims would be nice. There could also be some sort of new command list with stopattack, scare, sneak and so on.
A little note about the tellpet command. Ignoring the fact that it doesnt seem to work with everyone, in a combat group it is important to *always* communicate with your team mates. That includes near constant feedback. We have often found it much more useful to see in spatial " (CH name here) says a)" then to guess that the CH has sent the pet(s) in to attack. We always train our pets with VERY short battle commands so we don't loose valuable hotkey space to long commands. Considering the traffic in the combat and spatial screens during battle the little more added with a say or shout is of no consern. It is actually more consern that it goes by so fast we miss it rather than it is there. You however may have other conserns therefore YMMV (Your Milage May Very).

Exactly the same issue ive been having, sometimes play works sometimes it doesnt, guess its time to find a new word.
/tellpet is kinda funny. It works fine with most words, but when I use the command "play" for trick1, do a "/tellpet play" nothing happens. Works fine with other words like "jump" for instance. The pet will do trick1 if I "/say play". Perhaps "play" is a reserved word or command for something so it does not work in a /tellpet.
- Our role is to stand outside the starports yelling with all our pets out to cause more lag.
- To ride around on our mounts at half the speed of speeders and dying as they "slow down for combat".
- To watch out pet get demolished by 2 lvl 80 rancorstila TKA comes up and kills 6 lvl 80 rancors in 3 minutes (without losing visable HAM).
Sorry if that's not very constructive, but it is true.

"status effect inflicters (i.e. poison, disease, knockdown)"
I've never seen knockdownland froma pet, and posture down is pretty rare to land. I usually use a 40ish pet with a 30ish pet. Is that because my pet is to low to land it?

In a group setting back in the day I provided some tanking as well as extra damage.
Because Pets get stuck so often and can not be summoned neither quickly nor at all if they get lost these uses are basicly gone.
I hope they get fixed and I have a purpose again other than a Swordswoman with a useless profession.
1. Whatwas the appeal of the Creature Handler profession to you? In other words, what things make being a Creature Handler something you have chosen to do?
Well I started out as a brawler/ent. Then I was given a spat and by happy accident found that the bird could dance with me when using one of the formations. Thinking, "hey it would be cool to have my own troupe" I started down the path of CH. Now I just like having pets. I like dancing with them and showing them off a bit. I enjoy getting request to go and catch a slice hound or bird or bunny for another entertainer. My pets are my tanks as well. Being a fencer I don't do much damage. It is nice to have my pets do the damage for me or to keep the creature at bay while I heal the pet.
2. What role(s) do you, as Creature Handlers, fill in the game world? For example: Tanks, damage-dealers, roleplayers, status effect inflicters (i.e. poison, disease, knockdown), resource harvesters, mission runners, pet salesmen, pet trainers, etc. Which roles (combat or non-combat)does the CH fill better than any other profession?
RIght now CH is really in limbo. What does it do? CH trains the occasional super BE pet for another player. Or we play catch and release. In groups our pets may be seen as a relief aggroing the threats..or as annoyances taking XP. Personally I use my pets most that give status changes so I can focus on damaging attacks (but some of these are nerfed :/ ). The CH profession is currently, or seems to be, one played only by RPers or similar. Not combat orriented folks. Otherwise we are "set decoration," there but not really doing anything but making the set look better.
also we can occasionally remove form combat one creature and thus lessening the number of targets.
3. What should a Creature Handler's place in a hunting group be? Everyone in the group wants to feel important... what should make the Creature Handler an important addition? What would it take to get us to that point?
In a hunting group we should be the ones aggroing.
In the focus of the over all game we should be installing fear into other gamers. Think about it. Which should be scarier...a guy in armor and no weapons...or a full grown rancor? Our foes should see a rancor coming and want to run. Now we just get laughed at. If I do PvP my opponent ignores me and takes out my pet first, then does the same to me. We need to be feared. Being able to catch and raise wild creatures should be just as integral to our profession as using BEed pets, more so in fact.
