I'm sorry for your loss, i know how it feels to lose a loved pet.
I held my last dog as he died. He was a lovely long hairedcreamy-white german shepherd, a bit smaller than a newfoundland. He had a deformed spine which was causing him alot of pain and the vet said at his age (he was very old...the dog not the vet 
) it would be better if he was put down.
) it would be better if he was put down.Having said that, i'm disgusted with some of the comments in this thread. Kill the dogs?! What is worse, the dogs doing what is natural to them or you doing something for revenge?
Maybe you think your dog would never kill anything? If so you're deluding yourself. Dogs are pack animals, and even if they just chase something (they will chase anything, not just cats) they are just playing, but when they are with other dogs things can get out of hand. They do "egg each other on" and if they chase and catch something there's a good chance it will die.
I don't know anyone who's pet hasn't bitten another cat or dog, or eventook the ends off the postman's fingers (his fault, he knew the dog was there [guard dog signs on the gate anddoor] but he still put his hand right through the letterbox).
Cats kill birds every day. Should they be put to sleep?
Blame the owner, not the pet....not that i believe in locking up animals in houses....

You have my sympathy as well. I'm not a cat lover, but that doesn't mean I don't understand your pain. I've lost pets too, and what helped me is to try remembering the love they gave you.

its ben over 20 yrs and reading your letter, and typing mine still brings tears to my eyes.
I think thats why we being a creature handler apeals to us, it may only be code to some but to us our pets ingame are just as real as our pets at home :-)

.....................................thats the worst story of losing a pet I have ever heard.....i couldnt imagine seeing something like that happento my dog... Did the police do anything about it?

I feel for you man, seriously. I own 2 cats myself and I'm not sure what I would have done in your situation. Actually, I know all to well what I probably would have done. As much as I hate to admit it, I doubt if I would have been able to control myself in a situation like that. I collect swords and have several displayed in my home, but I think my celtic short sword wouldn't be on the wall for long before it was passing through the spine ofone of those twodogs.
As you can probably see, your story not only made me feel for you and your family, but also angered me. If you end up talking to a lawyer, let us know howit pans out.

Sorry to hear about brownie m8, i have 2 14wk old kittens, and i know if that was me i'd go down there and beat him and his dogs. i'm surpised that his dog haven't been put down as if they attack another pet/animal they can attack a person to. but i'm with everyone else take the B***ard to court and sue his a**e to kingdom come, might teach him a lesson
Ok maybe i wouldn't have beaten the dogs,but him yes.

answers no, the cops couldnt do anything.
everything happenned so fast i didnt get a plate number and with just a vague car discription they didnt have much to go on.
although losing a pet is horrible wether accidental or natural life cycle.
life is about growing and learning, moving forward is a natural response when you feel ready too
Cyphaze is doing the right thing here, hes letting it out, getting support and I know its a good thing to vent some anger and grief.
again Cy I wish ya well man, oh i see some people posting some revenge type stuff and believe me when I was in a situation like yours I might have acted on it. but looking back now I'm glad I didnt or wasnt able to perform an act of revenge.
at the end of each day that passes we must be able to look at ourselves in the mirror :-)
If your nieghbors learn from this and do not allow it to happen again then other pets/animals in the nieghborhood are safe. maybe a little 5 year old girl next door wont suffer you loss, and your beloved cat will have made a difference.
if they keep repeating the mistakes and keep letting the dogs loose then I would say something to them and possibly seek lawful help in this. but give them the chance to learn and make a difference and just maybe your lil family member may have not been lost for nothing.

Oh, I am so saddened by your situation. Your poor kitty, and poor you for having to witness the act as well as the aftermath.... It's natural to say "if only" and blame yourself, but doing that will only hurt you and your family more... and surely Brownie would not want that.
I do hope that you can get some help in seeking some sort of punishment for the dogs owners. Indeed it won't help bring back your adorable pet (who we all know is really a member of your family), butat least maybe it can be prevented from happening again.

Thanks guys for the replies, it really helps me a lot. I want to sue, but my dad has tried 2 lawyers, and neither will take the case. Even if one would, the most we could get was the market value of the pet - and Brownie came to us as a stray, he's not worth money. He's worth a lot more, but Ohio law doesn't care about emotional value.
The neighbor is the owner of an out-of-towncompany that manufactures salsa - not many have heard of it, the product is called "Frog Ranch Salsa." Our local Kroger buys the stuff up like mad. What I'm thinking about doing is writing aneditorial for the local newspaper about what happened to Brownie, just to show the guy that we won't forget it, and to tell the town what happened.
The only other thing I could dois watch the dogs... if the guy really doesn't care, he'll keep letting his dogs roam, even after the incident. If I see them outside of his property unsupervised, I can snap a photo and report them again - this'll get him another citation. One more citation after that and they take the dogs away. If he really doesn't care, he'll let his dogs roam unsupervised two more times, and he'll deserve the third citation.
I don't really want to take any of this out on the dogs... but just now our next-door-neighbor called and said a little kitten was scratching against their porch door, and she asked if it were ours. I said no, but as I thought about it, I imagined a little Brownie, pawing against that neighbor's door just like hemewed andpawed against our own porch door 7 years ago, wanting food. I don't want anything to happen to that kitten.

Ihave a cat named smokie , shes persian blue with the brightest yellow eyes u ever saw and if something happened to her id be heartbroken cus she a sweetheart, i always hated cats but after getting her i love them, when she was a few weeks old , small enough to fit in my hands while cupped together , she crawled up on my shoulder on the couch and fell asleep , thats when i fell in love with my pet(: and if someone intentionally hurt her id call the police and tell them u better send a cop cus im about to kill f... someone up , seriously!!

firs toff definalty dont blme yourslef for tihs, the fault lies with your neighbours (not thier dogs them, some poepel jsut arent responsible enough to own pets)
perosnaly m not a big fan of suing poeepl butin tihs case it seems the onyl way to affect your enighbours enoguh that they might pay attention, so on that tnoe have you considered suing tmhe for emotional distres sand mental anguish caused by thier negligence not sure how the alw woudl apply to this but it coudl well be worth at least looking into it as its obvious such a thing causes mental distress just as its obvious that tiher method of looking after tiher pets was negligent and that tihs resulting in the mental distress

As for the judgement, you should go for an appeal. Those dogs attacked your pet causing death. The sentence for that is putting the dogs down...no matter what

It seems you have a whole community of not only cat lovers, but animal lovers as well supporting you . My hats off to the wonderful souls that would reach out to someone who has lost a pet and my heart is with you and your family
