I like what your saying - increasing the bond between man and beast, and seeing a tangible effect, its like trying to give personality to a robot, the players in game are people (allegedly) the animations arent. I think I know what you mean though, there is nothing like it to be honest. Its a brilliant prof at times, gives a real buzz.

I would love to able to command a pet (hate that word, a little kitten is a pet not an 18 foot Rancor) to Eat a fallen mob, cue rending of a broken corpse, blood and bones flying everywhere accompanied by the grizzly sounds of chewing and slurping. Then finally your Rancor turns around with a big happy grin and rubs his tummy happily, finishing off with a jabba sized belch.

oooh, I just remembered a few parts that I completely forgot to weave into this concept revision, and since I edited it a while ago I figure I shouldn't edit it again right away.

1. Pets shouldn't stand around idly like they do now when not called upon to run or fight.

If a pet is not told to stay put, it should wander around slowly at its leasure in about a 20m radius. When told to stay, it would initially stay put, but after a few mins might circle around a little and take a few steps, you know, be an animal.

2. When a pet detects a predator is stalker the player, it should position itself between the player and the predator and do a menacing growl. A gameplay bonus could be that if the pet's CL is higher then the stalking predator, it might give up on the stalking for now.

3. extra commands that I mention a pet would normally not be willing to do, but take a high affection:

- Blind Guard target/self, also while another player is already being guarded.

By blind guard I mean the pet will do whatever it is you want it to do as usual, it could even be guarding a player and attack an aggressor because of it. However, when the Blind Guard target is attacked, the pet will drop whatever it's doing and rush to the target's aid, including if it was already attacking something else. Useful situations are when you want it to Guard yourself, but under all circumstances make sure the only medic of the group doesn't go down. Using this command you don't need to keep paying attention to if the doc is getting aggro'd, you can let the pet do that on it's own.

- Fight to the death

We've all been there, especially in the earlier days and especially the ranged fighters who can't easily pull their pets out of combat by /taunting the enemy and getting in the line of fire. The pet is losing, the pet is almost down, the pet runs the hell away only to be seen when you store it and pull it out again. If this command is used, the pet will not move a muscle to flee under any circumstance. Useful situation for this command would be a very tough target with other not-yet-aggressive targets nearby. Having the pet run and the target follow means everyone has to follow, and likely run into more agro and bad things happening. Ergo, chaos ensues and it all ends badly, your pet likely dying anyway. If it fights to the death, the tough target may defeat it, but it won't drag the whole group in a suicidal position, and if you're lucky, only incap the pet instead of kill it.

opinions are welcome as always.

GTO,
I like it. Like fantoq (we agree again /shrug), I would favor no toggle. Or let me say it this way. If there is a toggle then it should add more XP, for those choosing to roleplay the hard way. The worst fear I have is much like Vert's that any beneficial effect would simply be macro'd. Even with timers people will likely macro it somehow. But there needs to be some safe guard. Even if it is you can only earn one point playing per hour (hypothetical number because we don't have any system for this yet) and no combat can start in that given hour. Liken it to telling your kids you will play ball with them and then opting out because something more fun came along. If I can macro petting from midnight EST until server shutdown at 7am EST then I could effectively erase any and all bad effects for the day. That is not roleplaying it is using the system.

There should also be a way for a pet to attack whatever or whoever DB'd the master, that way it wouldn't just stop attacking, it would avenge its masters death (although you clone anyway) this wouldn't take much AI, just some coding changes. This should be useful in PVP, although even with that, pets are still crap in PVP.

Hi

GTOfire im not saying your idea is wrong im just saying as it stands its not helping a CH,, but if it was a fixed pet stat from the very begining then it might work, just arought idea of want i mean: if3 CH's went out and thay all tamed a creature (for argument sake ) lets say a razor cat each, the first one did not really show any love towards his pet by the time his pet was full grown, he would end up with a pet below the default level that pet should have been(stats), and no matter what love he showed after full leveling of pet, would not make any differents (the pet would stay as it is and never reach its default level)..normal rules apply to fighting and healing.

If thesecond CH showed love towards his pet while it was leveling up, then when full grown he would have a default level pet (stats) as alread in the game, (the pet would stay as it is no matter if he started to show it more love after it was fully grown)..normal rules apply to figthing and healing.

If the third CHshowed themost love (really look after his pet) while leveling, then when it was full grown would end up with a pet above the default level (stats) as long as he continue to show that love the pet would remain a higther level (stats) thay the other 2 CH's pets..normal rules apply to fighting and healing.

This may also help in PvP thier not going to know how strong your pet is, only the HAM by clicking on it.

mmm i don't know prehaps what im trying to say is a load of crap, and i should shut my mouth,, and leave it to you guys

Pluto,
You don't want to hinder gameplay too much by having to feed a pet every so often and having to rest every while, but if it's very easy to keep your pet happy, we might as well give em the rewards already.
So that means this system should require some devotion on the CH's part, and to do that for every single animal would be simply a pain. Nuttynoah here already shows not everyone would be that happy about having to do that. Not to mention low-level CHs with low HAM pets lose fights more often, and would therefor suffer from the Experience in Battle factor a lot without being able to do much about it.

I don't really think every single CH out there is so happy with this concept that they would be prepared to devote themselves to maintaining all their pets all the time with vigorous care, even if some of us are.

trandoshan,
The XP thing sounds like a nice reward and incentive to try out this baby at least. Shouldn't be too high of course, since then players would switch this on, keep going until their pet finally tells them to stuff it, switch it off and continue as normal. Actually, I think players would do that anyway if it meant 10XP more per kill, since there's no penalty for doing it a short while and then switching back. We could combat this and put the rule in that if you switch this thing off, your pet will be left with whatever penalties it had permanently. Obedience shouldn't be affected anymore, since someone who has this off must be able to expect reliabiltiy.

nuttynoah,
well, I can't say I like the 'not changable after fully grown' part of your post. While I can see that forming a bond with young animals you've tamed is quicker and easier than doing so with adult animals, pets grow too fast to justify doing it all in that time. 5 days of gameplay, perhaps less, and you'd have to have all your care done, your devotion high or low as you want it, and your pet loving you. That's just not achievable (shouldn't be, that is) in that amount of time. I also think we want this system to be somewhat forgiving. If you mistreat your pet at the beginning, but end up caring for it a lot, it will regain trust.
The basic thoughts of the CH who cares the most, gets the most, is true.

Or this alternative . . . some pets just aren't smart enough to grasp guarding their master. All wild mounts, for example, could fall under this, as well as the "piddley" pets. They could have a Devotion factor. Pets with low devotion wouldn't guard, while pets with high devotion would in time. BE's could make animals with higher or lower devotion as well.
