I've had the exact same thing happen to me when trying to tame other flying creatures, like the peko peko. Its quite annoying because it looks like you can tame it then... BAM! they're 70m away.

Not rare I know. But a b***h to catch it. I've been trying to get a flier (either the Enraged or Ancient, I was willing to take either) for about two months. They have a habit of streaking off too fast for me to follow right as I say the last phrase. Even on my swoop (set to /follow) I lost them. Well, today I caught the Enraged. Hehe. Saw two babies together, started chasing one around. I chased it for miles, stopping several times. Near encounters with nightsisters, twice stopped in a river and jumped in to tame it from the water (can't tame from swoop but can while swimming, go figure) but no luck. On my umpteenth try, it despawned. Frustrated and dejected I decided to head back to where I'd started and see if the other was still hanging around, not that I expected it would be. But it was, still surrounded by several adults. Parked the swoop, got off, munched on a almond bar and set to work, fully expecting to aggro the entire flock or have the baby do the usual fly-off. Set to work...tamed on first try! He didn't even try to run. Maybe he felt safe with all the adults hanging around. 
Whew. This has been a thorn in my side trying to catch one of these buggers and now it's done. On to the GPS I've been looking for just as long, hehe.

these are one of those babies you see frequently, but are actually HARD to tame, because of thier tendancy to run..i chased one for 45 min one day..it was fun...i think it would be nice if there were more like this..not impossible to find, just hard to tame
