Thread: Pet Kills is the trigger to learning abilities...
I've been trying this pet-kills theory today, and so far I'm a believer. Ilearned hamstring attack frommy giant peko peko without itseven rolling over its xp once--I was quite surprised.
I do three at a time (low-level pets with level 1 abilities) since I'll have to train the level 1 abilities first anyway--I might as well get through as many as of those first as I can. After I've learned all or most of the level 1 abilities, I'll start on the level twos.
I just try to make sure all three pets hit the creature at least once before it dies, so level 7-15 are best, actually, and I never have to worry about healing my own low-level pets.
Any pets with area attacks, though, will be the best ones to learn from...I almost pity the hugespawns of level 1-3mobsoutside Mos Eisely and such. ![]()

Yes, the Stonskin Hanadak really startled me when I first told him to attack one of the 4 sleemo punks. He obviously has a area attack because all 4 went down at once

I so want one of those--and the bloodmite queens. Though, really, I need all my datapad space for ability-oriented tames at the moment.

Does the stoneskins area attack also do those 3 states?
Try fighting against things closer to your pet's level, rather than the trash around newbie towns. Very low level pets can earn thousands of pet XP for killing creature lairs. Perhaps that's why it hasn't taken me more than around 20 kills to learn any creature skill so far...

This definately works. How many kills are you up to? As I stated before, I've had 2 pets that took over 1200 kills before I learned the skill. That can take a while... It shouldn't take 5 hours though!
How many creatures are you killing per minute?

Pet XP is wholly and completely unrelated to CH XP. You can be killing things that are only giving you 1 CH XP whilst your pet is actually gaining a couple of hundred (or even a couple thousand) per kill.

It's the time factor--takes almost no time to kill hundreds of low-level fodder, but can take awhile (solo, at least) to kill a number of high-level mobs. Though, again, this isn't about pet xp or CH xp, it's about kills--at least that's the theory that some of us are finding holds up.
If you're in a good grind group, you can get the best of both worlds, but what I like about killing the lower-level stuff is that I can also stop to get new tames at my leisure.
Obviously you need to be higher than your pet's level for this to work well. A level 80 character shouldn't have trouble killing single level 20-40 targets though...
The reason you're seeing it as being based on kills is because of the XP your pet is gaining per kill. Higher level pets (which are more likely to have higher level skills to learn) also require more XP.
You can get that XP by killing 4,000 level 1 creatures, but it may only take 500 level 20 creatures. Or 20 level 40's, or whatever.
It's not the *kills* it's the *XP*. If it was a certain number of kills, that number would be consistent across all characters - and it's not.

This is just plain false. I've learned at least 8 or 9 skills by killing yeard trash outside of newbie towns.
The Most XP I've had while killing these low level creatures is around 1250 XP.
By that logic, all anyone would EVER need to do is go kill ONE SINGLE CL80 CREATURE and you would learn the skill.
This obviously is NOT the case.
I don't wanna throw a spanner in the works here, but.. i just went huntin' on Dathomir with a horned Krevol (grouped with 2 other pets) and killed 12 Brackasets (cL82 mission MOBs) and i learnt the skill Thick Skin.. after only 12 MOBs....
I think we needidentical groups killing CL1s and CL82 to compare...
I'm still not sure about this...
*EDIT* 3 more MOBs down, learnt the other creatures skill (CL9 Violent Kradhu - Frenzied Blitz)
My other creature is a CL50 cat, will see how long that takes..
