Thread: If a CH falls in the woods?

But it had much more meaning to have to depend on doing other things than just beating the next mutant rancor over its head. You had to find the best place for chef food, spice for those times when it was necessary, spare set of armor, armor repair kit, mind and body buff, good stock of weapons, weapon power ups, and so on and so on.
Yup.
We agree on this. It was better that way.
The problem is, the uber-combat-wombats (there aren't many -- you know the type though) who are all into speed-grinding everything, see those activities as "downtime" and not interaction. And what has happened is that the dev team has bought into this definition... that non-mission-group interactions are DOWN TIME, and only mission groups count as "valid" interactions. Once the dev team bought into this concept, the old game, as we know it, was doomed.

Well I cancelled my account with the pub 19 debacle - and nothing I have seen since has caused me to change my mind.
So, it's adious from me too (sub runs out tomorrow).
Replacements are:
Anarchy Online (basic game is now free - but graphics now look a bit creaky)
Guild Wars
City of Heroes
Those last 2 aren't really MMORPG's (and the producers DO point this out!) - but are agood substitute.
I'll be looking for something else once I've exhausted combat - Everquest 2 did actually look good, but I passed on it since starting another SOE game looked like a bad idea.
I'll probably give WoW a try in a few months - but it doesn't grab me somehow (really want a decent SF game).

WOW... I never thought of it that way... your absalutly right.. so now the game has pretty much fallin into a double whammy.... wow that should be summited to the DEVs, maybe it will tighten some of those lose screws..

Vel, the reason is that they have changed the definition of "depend on each other." It used to be in a larger sense, that you can't operate totally in a vacuum. Oh you might be able to solo your mission lairs, but you couldn't do it without armor from the armorsmith, weapons from the weaponsmith, heals from the medic and entertainer, etc, etc, etc.
NOW what they have done is said that "interaction == mission groups." So, you "depend on" each other for the actual mission, but outside of grouping to do missions, you don't ever need to see anyone for any reason (which is why they are taking BF out of the game -- it doesn't fit this model).
Originally SWG interaction fell into many categories... Now, the ONLY kind of interaction they seem to care about promoting is "mission grouping" and all other forms of interaction are being slowly removed from the game.

Also if you have played it, I bet you will probably have noticed that the new SWG combat system is a near dead-ringer for the COH combat system. Someone was paying attention to what makes combat fun and tried to copy it.
The only problem is, they missed the boat, because the COH commands are easier to use and deal with, and it is not nearly as annoying to do things like melee in COH as it is in SWG-CU.
Ah well.
You can get pets in COH but they are just summoned elementals and are dumb as bricks... they just attack the nearest target. Pets can do very well as mini-tanks, to hold aggro for 30 seconds while you mess with the bad guys.
Overall, I found COH to have a much better basic combat engine than SWG's but... (a) since there was so little you could do, it was very very repetitive and boring, and (b) that's all there is to do... if you are not in the mood to fight, there is no point to logging in.
The good thing about SWG is (or used to be) that I could log in for other reasons -- to craft, hunt/harvest, sell, mess with my house interior design, entertain, and so on. And the sad part is they have seriously undercut most of those other activities in favor of going for the COH "simple/quick/action combat" system. And well, if they're just going to turn around and make SWG be like COH, I probably should just cancel and re-up my COH subscription since COH's combat system isn't bugged to hell and back.

SWG had an original feel to it. I liked how the different professions were dependent on each other. Then, for some unknown reason, they started making changes. Anti-decay kits, why get another weapon? With the CU medcens are barren. Medics can no longer heal wounds, just docs and the more numerous Jedi. You no longer have mind wounds, with them taking out BF, no need to ever go in a cantina. It seems like a huge mistake now. The lvl system is too much like a straight jacket.

good luck. I have cancelled my account as well for the same reasons. It will expire nextmonth. I can no longer let SOE ruin the Star Wars experience for me.I am afraid they will ruin my whole love for Star Wars if I continue to be pi$$ed off every time I play their dumb game. And its a real tough decision to make, a real bite in the a$$ that they have forced us to this point.
take care
