My experience has been this:

1) Fighting XP istough for a novice with a single pet (like my cu pa). Atroughly 100 XP a pop, it is slow going. I found it better to combine this with taming; I would take vynock missions on Talus, using the cu pa to kill the adults and putting it away when a baby would spawn.

2) Head straight up to Management III and get your second active pet. Once I started using a pair of cu pas, getting 200 XP per kill, fighting became pretty efficient.

3) At 2/2/1/3 I reached the point, with 9 commands, where I could get 1,000+ XP for each baby I tamed/trained. This has become much more efficient for me than fighting XP. Running across the dune hills between Bestine and Wayfar, I run into a couple babies every few hundred yards. I'm making 20,000 per hour without really trying hard. You need Taming II to make this work, since a good number of the animals are agressive.

Those who can, tame. Those who can't, buy.
