How do you learn them? By having the animals use the abilities themselves against opponents or just having the animals fight and level up?

Just let them fight beside u. it will usualy take some training levels (pet needs to gain XP from 0 to the stated XP to level up) for your pet until u learn the ability, but this is random. i had to level the XP of my kervol and ikopi thru 3 levels before i learned my first 2 abilities. but then i learned the staggering attack from my womb rat just after the first training level.
i used the newbie CL1-4 critters near mos eisley for the low CL pets to level up fast (i added a CL10 cupa for support which made it easier). i m now into my 3rd training level for my bolle bol colt (CL54), for which i joined a hunting group on dantooine.
Still don't have one, but working on Agility1. Also got a Frenzied assault2 in the pipeline!
Was grinding for a couple of hours last night, but lag's terrible for me atm....
I just learned Thick Skin (L1) from a Kreetle...
Now how do I teach it to another pet?

First two tames two abilities, and i only tamed like three lastnight

The speed one the name eludes me.
) but the first ability I learned was Fleet Footed L1 from a flewt, then was Imperiling Feint L1 from a narglatch, then KD L1 from a male tusk cat (worked on lvl 80 stuff 
but had a short duration)
Only found 1 pet with an ability last night.
