I had some success at pulling using a ranged pet last night (a gaping spider hunter, same as Sio reported in his preliminary tests). Because it had range, it could get fairly close while I stayed back.
My technique:
1) Stand about 80 meters away.
2) Tell the pet to follow the target.
3) When about 30 meters from the target, tell the pet to attack.
4) Call my pet back, bringing the target with it.
Admittedly I spent most of my time in space last night rather than hunt. It worked for the few NPCs I pulled, but by no means have I extensively tested this yet. Melee pets may prove to have additional challenges, as my ranged pets have behaved significantly better than my melee ones.

But does it work when you add:
5) When target gets close, tell the pet to attack again.
For my ranged pets, yes.
As I said, for melee pets, I haven't had much luck using them. They hunker down if the target moves at all, whether I call them back or whether the target chases someone else. It isn't worth the aggravation, so I only use ranged pets.
(I also suspect there is something in the ranged pet AI that lets the move a little, as my spider will give chase. This might be an area to investigate.)

It seems that all mobs AI went straight to hell after the CU. This "Nerf" as it is called is in fact a FIX for the mob AI that wasnt working as intended..
You can still very easily do single-pulls with a gun though.
I'm not at all clear on this. Why does a PET pull constitute an "exploit" but a GUN pull constitute "working as intended?"
Now you could argue, "Well people with level 10 pets and no CH can do it" and maybe that's an exploit. Um... except that I have NO marksman skills at all and since I am level 80, I can use a decent level 54 rifle and pull NPCs and Creatures VERY easily. I mean.... trivially easily... more easily than I ever could with a pet (because the gun doesn't have pet bugs like auto-store).
So I don't understand. Is PULLING bad now? If so, why haven't they nerfed trap pulls, gun pulls, etc? No, I just don't get it.

I hope it works, at least somewhat, for you and others. I still need to test it more myself.
Either way I'm not thrilled that we have to find work arounds to function when they limit our pet selection and bugs prevent very basic commands from working properly.

Don't jump all over my ass but...
CH still can pull if u have any ranged abilities. Pop the mob then run, while running have pets attack. It works fine. As I said in another post though...melee/ch folks get the shaft on this one big time. Not fair at all

Ya, I wish they would have concentrated on fixing some of the bugs that are hurting CHs (like specials, pets not obeying, etc.) BEFORE they fixed the bug (which it seems this one really was not working as intended) that was helping us by letting us "pull". That way when they did take away the "pull" we would still have stuff to fall back on
