I would rather die, clone away from home, and take decay than have one of my pets take a vitality loss.

That's how CH I am.

Short version:
A real creature handler is someone who knows that CH isn't just another proffession, it is more than that.

i think the initial question was along the lines of are you a true ch at novice..speaking for myself i would say no..i have learned soooo much about the profession and creatures since i undertook ch, i would honestly admit , i knew very little at novice..some masters however know even less..i once had a master, veryfrustrated, ask me why he couldn't get rancor missions from the terminal at cnet....

ch requires time and experience, not just xp, to fully understand and appreciate..there is no way to get that experince at novice..in my opinion

You're a "real" Creature Handler if you'vemastered it more than once

I agree with everything people have said here so far. The first time my pets lost vitality due to being ganked by an overt on my way back from running faction missions, I was literally seeing red. I was shaking with fury and ran from the cloner to the nearest recruiter and went overt for the very first time, ready to wreak a terrible vengence upon the person. Unfortunately someone else had beaten me to it, so I was left unsatisfied in my revenge. I still occasionally see that person around and think: "Boy, I'd love to kick his #$(*@$"

My BE pets are my workhorses. I love 'em, but I don't share the same attachment that I do from natural tames. I'll sacrifice a BE pet before I will a natural. My natural pets are pampered and spoiled wherever possible. Some more so than others, depending on their combat abilities. But I still enjoy letting them out to stretch their legs a bit and get their claws into a nice bordok mare now and then.

This past weekend was a milestone for me. My main, who has been a CHfrom the start, finally dropped the profession in order to continue down the jedi path. I had delayed and stalled for the longest time, putting up roadblocks along the way (have to drop all other skills first, have to cap jedi xp, have to get the alt up to MCH, etc). But once I'd done all those things I knew it was time to pass the torch and it was really hard to do. I took a day to go around the galaxy and gohunting with each of my pets on their native worlds as a kind of 'goodbye' to them, and then one by one transfered most of them to my alt. Due to lack of space and also just due to fondness, I kept my oldest and dearest pets on my main- to join me in my retirement.

But the rares and the more combat-worthy pets will get to live on at the command of my alt, so it's not all bad *sniff*

if you get novice with the intent to master, then yes
if you get novice with the intent to drop it soon after or just play around then your not a real CH your just a nerf herder lol

I think it's how the player uses whatever skills they have that defines a real CH from not. Players define themselves not the skills. Skills are what you can do, not who you are.

When I first became novice I remember running around taming things such as Rills and being so happy and then selling them to a noob for 1k. At that time, I thought I was a real CH. Now that I think about it though, when you are novice, you aren't really quite there yet. You can only tame up to level 12. Once you can tame about level 18 things, you start to get better. Then you can tame things such as dewbacks, rontos, mottled wrix's, desert squills, and other decent pets that can help a lot when fighting.

I asked a similar question in the BH forums a while back. How far up the BH tree do you have to be to be considered a BH? The question got the same broad spectrum of answers.

I never mastered CH, but have been at 3344 for over a year. I chose to allot my skill points on other things and since I despise grinding, I never got beyond 3344. If the XP system worked the same as it does for weapon XP, I would certainly have been a master long ago.

The great thing about this game (and one of the things I remember reading in the manual) is that you can customize your character and diversify as you choose. 3344 is the closest I've ever come to mastering an elite prof so at heart, I am a creature handler who uses combat/ranger skills to augment my abilities. I wore my "creature empath" tag more than any other so I guess I feel like I definitely am a creature handler. When you get tells from people askingyou to train/name/mount their pets for you, I'd say that makes you a creature handler too.

However, those 44xxopportunists (or was it 22xx?) from way back in 2003 were definitely NOT creature handlers though!

I think you're referring to the 3/2/0/0 CHs, who took on just enough CH to call a graul mauler to tank for them, back when the graul maulers had 75% kin resist and light armor. Awesome tanks there were.

I just have to put in my two credits worth after reading this. Being a real CH is an attitude, a way of life! I dropped MCH on another server after a year and a half to create a new character who will also be MCH. I could/would not delete my pets, I gave them all to a good home and yes it brought tears to my eyes. I am only half way to master now, but I know the profession well and know how to use my huntingcompanions to the best of their ability.

I am still novice but I am a real CH because I know the profession well. You have to know it well to master it, it is a learning experience. That is how you learn not to tank a Rancor with a GW.

Well I think it is easier to point out what makes a person not really a true CH. These are just some examples to show the fundamental difference between Creature Handlers and people who just want bigger pets.

1. Any player who want's to be lvl 35 Ch because they bought a BE made Kimogila is not a CH.

2. Any player who wants you to train a lvl40 Rancor he bought so he can use him for one or two days to grind XP is not a CH

3. A player with a macro to have his pet attack flesh eating chubas outside Keren, Naboo but refuses to tame a gurrcat because it is beneath them is not a CH

4. And my favorite: A player who pulls out a Rancor in a starport to show it off, and then laughs at someone pulling out a Peko Peko is not in any way a CH.

And here by numbers are the counterparts for all of the above.....

1. A CH doesn't want to be any level. They just want to see what they came tame with the level they have.

2. If a CH wanted to grind XP he would have been an artisan. I know there are always times when you switch a server or the like that you don't want to trodge through the lower ranks again. But any self respecting CH would feel dirty using a BE pet like that. I still feel bad using mine and I worked my way through BE just to make my own and not feel bad.

3. If you dont want to tame creatures unless they are 800th lvl then you are not a CH. A CH loves all of their pets and hates to let any of them go. And they would be happy to tame and keep every single creature on the planet, no matter what level.

4. This last one helps answer your question about whether a Novice CH is just as much a CH as a master.....A respectable CH would never try to tell a CH of lower level that they are somehow not their brethren. A true CH understands that even though a novice just started they have chosen the path of the lonely workaholic. Being a CH in this present incarnation of the game is all about hard selfless work. Work that has almost no rewards other than showing off your pets to friends and other CH's. A CH that laughs at a lower level CH because they have tamed something the older CH has forgotten about is not a true CH. Because by design we CH are caring and respectful people. A novice Ch who tames their first Fanned Rawl is just as excited as a MCH that just found a Bull Rancor baby. And anyone who tries to make fun of them for that is a poseur who only want's to use a disposable creature to fight for them.

But hey, I am only a 3424 CH, so what do I know! NOOB!
