You are most definently not alone. I greatly miss being able to use basic attacks from mounts. Heck id be thrilled if they even reduced the effectivness of the basic attack, something, anything.
Regardless tho they need to make up there minds, either enable the mounted basic attacks (on some level) or remove the "Your mount slows for combat" feature. Thats the only reason it was in the game and now that we cant attack from the saddle it needs to go away.
I tried very hard early on to get mounted combat reinstated to at least pre-CU form, but was told it was "working as intended" post-CU until I pointed out that it worked fine pre-CU, then was told they'd look in to removing the slowdown when attacked at least since we couldn't fight back. Finally, I was told it would be left as-is and revisited at a later time.
I have no idea of the current status of mounted combat, once the expansion is out the door maybe we can get some new information.
For those that never experiences it your mount slowed down to your normal running speed during combat and regained its speed bonus after combat. The whole advantage of a mount over a vehicle when they were implimented was that you could fight from a mount and not from a vehicle...which was why vehicles are faster than mounts.
I would propose allowing only creature handlers to use any specials outside of the basic attacks while mounted. There has to be some bonus to being a creature handler. As I say this please take note that I am not a creature handler and have no intentions on becoming one. I've done it before but I enjoy what I do now. I'd be happy just having my ranged shot capability on my cupa.
Personally I think this should be the main focus of creature handlers, or at least on the top 5. This is something that had been in the game pre-CU then was removed post-CU likely due to a bug or the usual lazy programming that has become too common. I understand not wanting to devote programmers to code in attacks but I don't see where coding only three attacks as being available while mounted would be a huge issue as a temporary fix for the community.
At fanfest this was brought up a couple of times
Devs seemed open to the idea but the chance of it happening anytime soon was very slim. Am sure it could be done so mounts could be used in combat but would require a whole publish to do. I also agree with ko-a completely about pet movement/speed and that needs to be addressed by the devs.

Kiting is why the "Your mount slows down for combat." was put into the game. We haven't been able to fight on a mount since the Combat Upgrade and we still have the slow down. Personally, I don't think the mounts run fast enough for effective kiting anyway even without the slow down. I'll gladly take the old movement penalty to be able to fight (with specials) while mounted. Ranged weapons already induce a penalty to movement anyway, so kiters would probably get hit doubly so.
