Thread: The return of the CH/BH combo...

... For those of you that haven't heard yet, BH is getting their Prerequisites dropped to only Exploration line in Scout. This gives them a few extra points to help them get skills to counter Jedi. It is being tested soon and supposedly going Live in the very near future.

I hit the profession calculator to double check my figures even though I didnt' have to, as I was close to going MCH/dabble BH anyway. At one time I was a MCH/MRM/MMarksman with Scout 4141 this appears to be the same number of points for MCH/MBH/MMarksman with the same Scout setup. Unless I read something wrong in the BH posts.

I know this will change the way some people view CH as you will probably see a few BH's out there go this path, while others will pick med skills or some sort of Brawler skill. This may bring on a few new claims of that P word. However, I for one am for this change. I was planning on putting some skills into BH as long as I kept MCH, I don't want to lose my pets. This change allows me to go Master in both. I was originally going to go MCH with as much Investigation in BH as I could just for the challenge of it all, and now I might actually get to play with their weapons, regardless if they are effective or not (waiting for CB).

I say hooray to the Devs for this move, and hooray to GreenMarine for his participation with the Smugglers. I say boo to having no Dev contact in this board in many months, (just a hello, we know you are still here would be good to me)

One last point. I forsee many BH going a different route than CH, as they can do more to help themselves by picking up MRM or even more Medic or TK skills, but we will see some and some of you out there might be able to capitalize on this, as we may have a market for pets again.

I have not seen todays patch notes, but I am assuming we have nothing listed at this time for CH.

To everyone searching for that elusive baby they want, rare or not, Good Luck.

Whether or not this is "good" will depend solely on the combat reballance. If the BH/CH combo becomes flavor of the month again, all we'll get is another nerf as soon as the first Pokemon pops out of someone's mouth, since they can't do anything to BH or they wouldn't be effective against Jedi.

But from what I remember Jedi still have an ability to turn pets. At least from what I saw last night before the patch, an annoying Jedi kept leading Enraged Rancors into the northen Outpost on Dath. The Rancor freely followed the Jedi in and never showed an in combat indicator until someone attacked the Rancor.

If this is still an ability of Jedi, which I do not know as I don't follow anything regarding Jedi that I can avoid, then those that Hunt Jedi or even want to be great in PvP, which a lot of, not all, but a lot are into PvP more than PvE, so I will assume that they will go with Rifles or TK for the time being. I don't see us becoming a partial flavor of the month as a BH can leave the hunting line alone and use those points elsewhere. I may be wrong, but I still don't see another hit to CH in the near future, well at least nothing that we already didn't expect to happen.

You're assuming though that a BH will automatically go into something for PvP or Jedi hunting, when history shows that will be 10% or less of the BH playerbase. Now it will just become a stronger class for PvE and do very little, if anything, against the Jedi population (which is what they wanted to encourage, I'm sure, was Jedi hunting), as the BH's take PvE-oriented combat instead. The PvE class could very easily become CH again, just like they did before. I have a feeling that this is going to backfire on the devs VERY badly, because they're going to be very loathe to tell those BH's "um, guys, we screwed up, we need to take those points back again". So we'll just be in for even more f'ing with yet again.

Sorry I'm so optomistic about the whole thing.

if they ever fix ch pets in pvp you'll see a big influx imho. but as it is now i can kill a rancor in 3 hits pve, in pvp 3 hits as well. but ch is fun in pve, you don't want ppl to enjoy themselves? I'm sorry whats the problem?

This explains why they are now nerfing and ignoring the Bounty Hunter. Like the CH they once had the ability to actually kill the Dev's favorites. lol Put them both into the same character and do the dev's equivilent of /addignore MCH/MBH.

Kill a rancor in three hits? What are you using? A BFG-9000?

At Master Rifleman, I could take down a Bull Rancor in less than 10 seconds with 9 shots with the DXR6b rifle. A normal Rancor I think it was only6 maybe 7shots. And they never even knew I was there, as the timer for agro when lying prone is longer than 9 seconds.

I just showed up here from the BH boards. A couple of things I can tell you: First, nobody over there is talking about CH/BH combo. The templates people are considering are primarily BH/TKM, BH/Commando and BH/Pistoleer. The other thing is that every BH I've ever met is interested in hunting Jedi. Really, if you're not interested in hunting human marks, then why bother becoming a BH at all?

So anyway, the reason I came by is that I am interested in CH/BH, largely for RP reasons. I just love the idea of fighting with a pet. But I've had the impression that CH is no longer a great choice for PvP and has largely become a very efficient PvE profession. Is that correct?

Thanks!

Technically that is correct, pets just can't handle the PvP aspect at the moment. maybe it will change, maybe it won't. So unless you want to go PvE as a BH/CH, you might want to go to one of the FOTM professions.

The fact of the matter is that we're not all that great for PvE at the moment, either. That may change when all of the other combat professions have their damage, armor, and buffs weakened with the combat rebalance. That's what we're hoping. Really, though, pets are just HAM buffers. I love being a creature handler for other reasons than min-max combinations, which is fortunate; we don't have any min-max use. If you do decide to go with creature handling and you fight high-end mobs, you'll spend an enormous amount of pet stims (and therefore money) keeping your pets healed. The amount of stims you'll need will increase proportionately with the amount of "nerfing" done to weapon damage, as the pet will be required to tank for longer periods of time. Assuming you can find a BE who still makes pet stims, that is.

My honest suggestion at the moment: if you are really in love with the idea of taming and training pets, having them fight alongside you, and occasionally keeping you alive a bit longer, then you'll probably have a splendid time with the profession. I certainly love it, despite its flaws. If you're looking to get the most bang for your buck, your points will be better spent elsewhere. You won't get any defensive modifications with Creature Handler, pets won't last long at all against players, they'll incur tremendous damage against big PvE content, they'll autostore on you when you need them the most, and they'll slow you down as you'll either need to ride a mount, an X-34, or walk so they can keep up with you, carry crated tents so you can call them out quickly at each lair, or stand around for 15-45 seconds while waiting to get them out of your datapd.

I replied to a post a few days ago with the things I enjoy about being a Creature Handler. I've been one since launch and I don't love it any less now. It's not for everybody these days, though. It's as much of a "niche profession" as ranger is. If you're willing to put up with the flaws, faults, and messy code that governs us, if you really like the idea of "the tame," if you think you'd enjoy seeing an animal grow from a baby to an adult over the course of a week, you'll probably have a lot of fun. If you're looking for something to supplement your Bounty Hunter combat abilities...well, the road aheadwill bepaved with disappointment.

The weapon-change delay has indeed made BH quite similar to CH .... crippled to near-uselessness by a poorly thought-out code change.

Now BH's can join CH's waiting for some time far, far after JtL to have their totally borked profession looked at by the devs again. Welcome to the club, boys & girls!
