I am building my first ever CH and am also working toward Novice Carbineer and Novice Pikeman. I was doing some calcs with the character builder and it appears that with the other basic skills I want I will only be able to focus on either carbine or pike.
Can anyone speak to which of these might better complement the CH profession, and why? I enjoy both of them but must sacrifice one for the CH cause.
Thanks for any info

I'd say carbineer.
You can sit at mid-range and help your pet take down it's prey.
I myself am planning ong going master CH, Rifleman, Scout.

I was a Master Carbineer/Master BH before I took up CH. I still have the BH Carbs line and the line in Carbineer that gives CrippleShot (God, I love CrippleShot).
I've done pretty well while grinding CH. I use Confusion Shot to Dizzy/Stun, Underhand Shot for KD, then Crippleshot finishes them off.
Works for me.

I'm TKM/MCH .... and i will never give it up .....i can heal my pets during battle because i'm close .... and i can heal my own disease/poison/bleed after fighting nasty critters like Bull rancors or Screechers ...and heal all my wounds....

That is what I was thinking. I know from experience that a lot of the higher level creatures have posion/disease, and I know that TKM can ahndle both of those efficiently.

Well I am a MCH, working on MSwords and TK 4/4/0/0. Going to try the fabled TK KD and see how it works, if it is not that great I will drop it and pick up novice Medic. I could be wrong but I dont think a TK can manage the damage of a Swordsman, plus the power hammer does blast damage which is not as commom as a klnetic res.

I'm doing Carbines/MCH. States + creatures for tanking + the cone attacks with Charge Shot 2/Full Auto Area.
Only real issue is the huge HAM costs of carbines, but so far with my pet tanking + a harvester/combat droid, I've gone without armor/buffs. I set the droid to guard me, direct the creature to attack and then glow wire/states/inflict damage (going for Ranger xx3x and thank goodness for PDart/Glow Wire/Adhesive Mesh in Scout).

I don't recommend mixing CH with a melee prof. I was master swordsman and master CH. The pets don't deal much damage, but they do function well as tanks (PvE that is) If you're in the mix, then their role as tank is practically worthless. TKM might be the only exception there, but that's just because TKM is overpowered and will work with any prof. (Until the combay upgrade that is) If you are dead set on becoming a MCH, then I'd choose a ranged profession, and of those, I'd likely choose carbineer because of the ranged KD/Dizzy, and much higher accuracy than rifles at both close and medium ranges. Rifle being second, andpistoleer being last. I myself am trying to mix Ch with bounty hunter, which is a lot like carbineer, but also has the LLC (Heavy weapon) and pistols with eye shot.BH is a combination of the different ranged profs, so it's well suited atlong and close ranges.

When I originally did MCH - I was BH/MCH - then went TKM/MCH and loved it.. I am now becoming a CH again going for Master. I am a Master Swords with some TK and I love it. I think its really a matter of style I know some people don't like doing Melee and some do.. I love Melee and know I will never give up TK - meditate is just to nice to have

First time around i went MCH/ with master ranger, and very little combat skills. I needed my pets to tank and i was just there to heal and take the odd shot. This time around i'm TKM and heading for MCH. I don't need my pets as muchanymore. Its strange for me because i lived or died by me pets first go around. I had to find pets that could hack it out in a tough fight. If you want the true CH experience don't take a combat prof. You will be thrilled to have anything after that. BUt now that I am a TKM i'll have to side with marlonB and say i'll never give it up
I guess that makes me a bit of a hypocrite. :0 But this is a hypocrite that can solo a bull rancor lair.

TKM/MCH.
Can heal pets and me becaus eI am close can attack Millions of bull rancors in an evening without working about Disease.
You can also Master Brawler or Some def in Fencer and do ok in PVP/duels. If they ever "rebalance" everything I am ready to fight with my Creatures.
