I know your pain my friend

when i was 16 me and my little 10 year old sister were taking a walk to the store, i was minding her while our parents went out to a wedding, we walked the dog to a nearby store for some candy, chips and stuff i was treating her :-), i had the dog on a leash but it was a wierd leash u could let out like 10 feet. my neighborhood is a quiet one with little traffic.

as we walked home hand in hand the dog stopped and sniffed at something near the curb and his hind section (leggs) were actually in the street. a car came speeding down the street and in front of our eyes ltteraly swerved and hit the dog on purpouse, it was totally clear the driver aimed for him. the dog was thrown a few feet away and howled in pain. it was brutal. I ran to my dog stooped down to pet him and out of pain he nibbled at my hand he didnt hurt me but hecouldnt control himself

my friend lived nearby and was outside and seen it all, he and his older sister ran over, his sister took my little sister inside the house cuddling her and called the police, while me and my friend watched my pup pass on. it haunted me for a long time i blamed myself for not having his leash shorter, i was angry and wanted to kill the kids (I assume) who did it.

its ben over 20 yrs and reading your letter, and typing mine still brings tears to my eyes.

I think thats why we being a creature handler apeals to us, it may only be code to some but to us our pets ingame are just as real as our pets at home :-)

When I was 10mycat got mauled by a neighborsdog as well but she was somehow able jump inside of an empty closed dog cagethat was left over from when our golderretriver was still a pupbefore the shock set in and she passed out (I was so thankfull that Iwas to lazy to take it down and store it). I dont know exactly how long shelayed there in that conditionbut when we got home the neighbors dog was jumping all around the cage trying to get in and she wasint he middle of the cage laying on the ground still breathing but not moving. We immediately rushed her to the vet who was nice enough to take care of her on his day off we were told that she might not make it and the first few days would be critical. I remember crying praying to God that she would come home. Luckily aftera week she was able to come home with casts and stiches I still dont know how she was able to find the stregnth to escape and jump in the fence after being mangled by the dog but Im thankfull she did. When we told the neighbors they said theywere sorry and that it wouldnt happen again and went out that day and got a chain so their dog couldnt leave the yard.

Thanks for the replies guys... I still can't believe that the cat who would sleep on his back, feetup in the air,without a care in the world, without fear, could die this way...

This is what bothered me the most. Just maybe an hour before the incident, I remember that Brownie came to our deck door, wanting to be let in, and I unlocked it, but then changed my mind, since it was very wet outside and he would have been a pain to clean up... so I relocked it. It never occurred to me to open the basement door and let him dry in the basement...

If I had let Brownie in, this never would have happened.

I am very sorry fro your loss, I would have been very possibly been in jail by now if it had happened to me

Cyphaze its totally normal to blame yourself and tink about the if's and maybe's, a pet is a family member you feel the loss just as bad. it aint ur fault man.

I'm very sorry to hear that. My dogpassed due to illness brought on by advanced age, but it helped me to take comfort in the knowledge that she was now in a place beyond the reach of pain. There's no need for me to worry about things happening to her, because she is guaranteed safety and happiness no matter what happens. I'm sure that is also the case with your cat.

My advice to you, kill one of those dogs and seriously disable the other. If ya end up in court, plead temporary insanity. If you hurt thier 2nd dog enough...they'll have to go through the pain of putting it down. I have a cat, I couldn't imagen having that happen. My deepest sympithies to you.

It's not the dogs fault. They were just listening to instinct. It's the neighbors fault for not securing their dogs. They damn well should have known better.
