Thread: Why IMHO SWG is on the ropes

Greetings,

I was not sure where to post this but decided that since I am a Master CH I would start here.

I believe there really are a number of reasons why SWG is on the ropes for many gamers but may I point out just a couple of the reasons.

First: The game shipped with a number of known bugs in it that had not been fixed. Problems that we all encountered on day 1 are still here months later. I think that is probably the number one reason why SWG is struggling and people are angry.

Second: Haste makes waste. When you rush a publication out to live before it is thoroughly tested it tends to fly like a cement pig.

Third: The sense that the community as a whole, is being ignored. Again and again it would be nice to hear where the Developers plan the game to go, rather than having to look into the future through some grey fog and realize that we the players see the game more clearly than those who are suppose to be creating it. Once the community as a whole perceives that we are not being listened to or that our ideas and our experience is falling on deaf ears, then things go down hill in a hurry.

Fourth: The Jedi Grind. Above everything else this is probably the reason that the game is really in deep trouble. The idea that you "grind" professions in the hope of unlocking the "FS" slot in order to become Jedi in order to be part of a profession that, for the moment, is totally screwed. I actually aquired a holo in Sept. when I was on Dantooine trying to tame a Graul, and I killed a force mystic. My first Holo said Master Architect. I said up yours, I refuse to be a master Architect because it totally goes against the way I feel you should find and release your FS slot. I have been so thankful for that first holo, because I have watched people grinding profession after profession trying to find that magic key and becoming ever more discouraged because they aren't finding it.

What happens is you see someone walking around with Master CH or Master Commando or Master Smuggler or Master Architect and you know what goes through your mind: are you a true master or are you a holo grinder who has no idea what it means to be a Master anything? I have been hunting Krayt dragons since I became novice CH 2 2 2 2 and I had rifleman 4 0 0 0. In short order I learned that a rifleman at that time, was not going to help his pets take down a krayt dragon very fast. It took me 6 weeks at least to master CHand everytime out I learn something new. A few weeks ago I met a fellow named Mensenn, Master BH, and he taught me more on how to hunt the new improved Krayts than anyone else. Now 2 or 3 of us can take down a Krayt dragon, and there is no wondering if there was loot because we built a trust.

Lastly, and I know the post is long already, no matter what profession you are in, if you master it, become MASTER of that profession. If you can make armor make the best stinking armor the game has ever seen. If you are Master CH be the best CH the game has seen, learn how to use, take care of and yes exploit the weaknesses of certain animals etc. because that's what MASTER's do. We know what we can do, we know what pet to use in certain circumstances, we know when to pull them out and when to use specials (when they work). We know how to use our secondary professions to enhance our MASTER CH so that we are the best dang CH's the galaxies have ever seen. With all these psuedo Masters it isn't any wonder that people are frustrated. How many times have you heard someone say, "oh I am just mastering this because of a holo." That is no reason to master anything and in fact you are not a master, you have gained the XP, but as soon as you are done you drop the profession. You haven't mastered CH or Weaponsmith, you have not drunk deeply of all the potential of that profession. So IMHO the worst thing that has ever happened to the game is the Jedi Holo Grind, because it has ruined good professions because people are now simply uber dabblers and have no clue what to do in very tricky situations.

Thank you for listening to my thoughts.

....and then no matter how hard we get nerfed, we still keep CH because we are still some of the coolest characters on the game.

My opinion is this..World of Warcraft will eat into SWG and EQ, sony will lose alot of subscriptions when that game comes out.

The premature release certainly didn't help. The launch day disaster left a bad taste in a lot of mouths.

The FACT that most of the elite professions were never adequately tested in beta led to many problems, particularly with the combat system, which is why we're in the midst of this five month long "rebalancing" that started by nerfing creatures (and creature handlers) half to death, except for the highest level creatures, which were radically buffed and simultaneously made less attractive from a risk/reward perspective. Eventually the other professions will be changed, but for now the game IS out of balance, by design, and won't be at a state where one can have any pretense of a legitimate balance complaint for at least 3 months

The FS unlocking system is totally borked, leading to a borked profession that was "tested internally" during beta, but no player ever got a chance to really give it a workout.

Also, the devs can't decide if they want to have a MMORPG or an MMOFPS game, and the catering to the Quake PvP crowd in "balancing" demonstrates why this is a problem.

Nice post, well put. Unfortunately this is the way of things now, rushed releases, fixes after the game has shipped, balance issues going on for months. This is not only star wars, it is across the board in games. Anarchy online, should have tried that one when it came out. Soe is doing a good job when you look at other online games when they where new. Imho, star wars brought in a lot of players new to online gaming and the slow pace at which fixes, balance issues and so forth are dealt with. When you go from uber to so-so, players go up in arms. What goes around comes around, we were 1st, we will not be the last to get balanced. I have yet to play an online game in which pets did the killing. DAOC, enchanter pets were great tanks, but they served the purpose of holding the target so a mage could kill it. druid, the same, pet would hold agro so dot's could kill. PvsP, pets were a no go. mages and druids were the 1st to be targeted. Any smart foe is going to forget the pet and kill the handler. Star Wars is now seeing pets used in a more correct format. No it's not balanced yet and I don't agree with all of what we've been delt, but pets are far from useless. Wait until the smoke clears then see where we stand in the scheme of things. Bugs excluded , things such as pathing, aggression and such do need to be fixed asap. I guess I'm trying to say this isn't the worse game i've been in by a long shot. not the best either, but it's not even a year old so I'll give it a while and see how it shapes up.

...all I ask is that the Gaming Gods give me the strength to hold out until City of Heroes comes out....

myholo said put me on the floor (it woulda said table but i don't have stairs)...

i've come close to mastering all the novice profession, only ever mastered marksman though... have been up and down the medic all of the medic trees a few times, same with scout gone from 0 survival exo to capping out the 4th lvl box 3 times... mastered CH and Rifleman, dabbled in pistols and carbines (might try them again now that they got some love)... even did entertainer 4th tier on 3 of the boxes (never saw a use for ID lmao)...

but the system to become a jedi would be best if you had to do certain things... like say build your own house, complete good deeds for npc's, get the fort tuscan completed system message, kill a kryte (juvy or ancient doesn't matter, solo or with a group), see x # of POI's, ect... you still have the change in professions, but you have to actully play the game...

but yes this game is lacking for content in so many respects... so the players have to creat their own... what i would like to see is a master quest for all professions (RIS armor for WS)... but i actully play the game, don't grind anything, don't AFK anything, my only marco's are /harvest ;/loot (i hate waiting for the radial menu)... also get rid of the time sinks... if i'm on dath and want to get to rori why should it take me a half hour or shuttle waits (if i'm overt and need to avoid theed)... heck they are going to render the camping skills in the game useless (for the most part)...

the game was poorly made at launch... they should have tried out all the crafting professions with 1000 resource stats/ max expamentation/ amazing results... just to see what the best non-inhanced weapons/armors would be... then created the rest of the content around that... instead of 7 minths into the game rebalance it so all the mobs were changed...

ok i'm not gonna go on anymore, too many whines for me to write down...

I am sick and tired of hearing REBALANCE. When the rebalance is complete the game will do everything except tuck you in bed at night. Rebalance the damn game already stop adding new stuff until you have the game working correctly. The rebalance will fix nothing. The rebalance is a delaying tactic. We are not being listened to.

I have found a fix for all the CH issues. Drop CH it is what the devs want obviously, eliminate CH.

Just wait another 10 or 20 years for the mythical rebalance and the bugs will still be there. Get the game working then rebalance if necessary.

Why do I keep coming to these forums? I get so upset.

Interesting Post, but I sadly must disagree on most of them.. And I do so with the outmost respect, since i believe you touched on many valid points.

1 - The holo grind may be frustrating but it gave me the opportunity to explore the game in ways that I would not have done so otherwise. I am a Fencer and a CH and I love it. I had no intention being these until I started holo grinding. And now I will never totally leave them and will always be one. Most of my friends have noticed the same thing and got attached to certain professions because of it. So, Holo grinding may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and there may be some that abuse it, but it has added a dimension to the enjoyment of the game.

2 - I have played in many games like SWG (EQ, UO, AC etc) and they where all pretty much the same with the bugs, patches and complaints, EQ and AC where even worse. To be frank here, this is the reality of these games and no number of beta test will prepared them to real production without a tremendous loss of cash. Otherwise some corporate cat will pull the plug if he or she feel the production cost is to high. Thus, I prefer to play with these bugs and watch them slowly go away then to not play at all.

3- I believe they have been responsive and have done a great job in compromising various different needs so that we can all have a better game. IF you remember back when CH proposal where first introduced they modified it because of the responses made. It may not of been perfect, but it was better then before. SWG has a hell of lot less "fist of god" attitude then other games.
.
4 - Finally -- this is probably one of the best games to date in this genre, so I am going to enjoy it and focus on the journey of playing this game and I am not going to focus on negatives.
