Creature Handler Archive
Thread: A request for a Retire Pet option
While this has no doubt been suggested to death, I would like to see us given at the very least one of two options for dealing with an old favorite pet when it is time.
The first, and more preferable, would be an option to "Retire" the pet; turning it into an item similar to a bio-engineered "deed" for a pet. The creature would no longer be a datapad element, but simply able to be dropped in a building or even a camp, where it could do its "idle" animation, or even perhaps the trick animations suited for the species. The "retired" pet would retain the name it had been trained to at the time it was retired, and not be able to be tamed or used again as a creature pet.
The second, which would at the very least provide a better illusion than the current "destroy" option we are callusly called on to use the way we would drop an unneeded waypoint, would be to provide some type of "release" AI effect for the pet. Allow it to appear or execute the release command while the pet is "called"and the pet might perhaps face it's former CH master, possibly perform its tricks once or twice, roar or whatever greeting the pet makes, and then turn and depart, walking a few steps and then running off.
We know this is not a permanent thing; that we are not likely to run across a pride of kittens following Fluffy at some point later on in our travels, but for those of us that are animal lovers at heart, and who have chosen the creature handler for that reason, give us a little bit of an ability to handle the release of a treasured comrade, as you have described our pets, rather than the choice of destroying a data element. If this is a "roleplaying" game, give us a little room to play the role when it is what we are forced to do by the limits of the game in storing pets. If this is a fantasy, spare us a little of that fantasy when it means something to us.
Make the creature handler, who you describe in glowing terms as devoted to their creatures, a little less cold when it comes to saying goodbye, or offer us the chance to keep those treasured companions in our homes as we move beyond their hunting skills.

MY hats off to you...
I like the first option, let us turn our favored adult pet into a small statue, or even a home idle, with his action. I have had to say goodbye to so many loyal friends, because together we had died too many times. I have a GSP now, that I am having to consider exchanging him for a new baby, but, I just hold back everytime I get to that DESTROY dial. I would love a statue named of my favorite pet. And it takes up storage space in the bldg so becomes a normal item. Non-tameable...
Cute, let it come out of the datapad, do it's trick 1 and then turn and disappear, less painful to see...
YES... You got my vote on it.

I think we should be offered either option. There could be a limit put on the number of "Pet statues".
with maybe a non-transfer tag put on em.

I'd like both options.

I think either option would be a good one. Definitely better than the current system.
Retiring a pet should just:
- Make it so it cant attack
- Allow you to call it anywhere and follow you around, and do tricks at will
- you should also get a play option where you character plays with the pet, eg wrestles it and such, like i do with my pet
irl that is - Make it invul
- make it so it dont use datapad room at all.........
That would be all, i mean your not dismissing it like would a staff sergeant of the entire army would yet another private. But more i have no more use for you my friend but your living with me and may the good times role
effect happen.
Im not ch just i think that'd be cool
I would love to see the pet as a "noncombatant" that did not get attacked, but I think it would be hard to convince Tigger or Chuckles to stand by and watch their beloved master torn to bits in front of them..
I like the idea of a non-combatant pet that can be called and has its tricks available, and I would like to see most of the commands besides the combat ones (guard and attack, and the reaction to anything breaching the "perimeter" on patrol) remain, so I could have the pet follow others or stay outside the door when I run into a place or sit in the corner in the cantina. I think it might be difficult to allow, but it would certainly be a nice option. This would also bring back the ability to keep a pet just for the fun of interacting with people in the cantina or homes and camps. Using the Patrol option, a pet could be given a start and end point at the same location as another player's, and issued the "patrol" command by a third party that was given "befriend" status, for example, to run races.
At the very least, I think the "retire pet" should be an option for us; it adds nothing to our "power" or any unbalancing factor to the game, and it significantly enhances our roleplay as loving masters of the creatures we partner here.
