Actually not only have i found CU to be pretty much superior in every way to our live game, I have found that opinion prevelant from most everyone who plays it. the problem i see in these forums is uninformed people commenting on something they want no part of regardless of its worth. I'll bet u havent even played the test server, becuase the frog isnt activated and you wont PLAY thru the combat upgrade test to form your opinion. In fact i'll suspect that you and people like you are either a) scared to death of any change b) afraid that everyone will be on even ground, and your uber armor, guns, swords and buffs wont let you solo every peice of content in the game.
My advise for SOE: Look at the polls from the live forums, but take the results with a grain of salt. people dont like change, as is show throughout anything involveing people. instead look to the private combat upgrade forum polls. these people are the cream of the crop and chosen for their ability to discern real balance, instead of concentrating on thier own ability to exploit the system.
Bravo !
Fatal Error in the CU, in case you haven't caught on yet, is that 'Star Wars centric' (aka ''Star Warsy" earlier on) was not made synonymous with 'SWG centric'. People will not play "World of Star Wars" or "EverWars" or whatever else you are trying to make them play.Unique is GOOD in a competition marketplace. It gives you a niche market. Please stop believing you're going to gain new players. Please learn to keep the players you have.
The letter from Smedley makes me feel like he's preparing for a mass quit: "Our other games are good too!" (paraphrased).
However, changes in engineering at this late stage cost lots of cash (simple time:money ratio, right?) and you're working with a deadline. And The Juggernaut (aka Lucasarts) will not tolerate failure to meet deadline. Many more Bothans would die. ...Okay, I'm assuming there, but why would they wait? No offense, but has anyone watched or purchased anything made with Star Wars in it since 1990? It's all a cash cow now. Lucas was a god when it came to merchandising. And this game is just that - Lucasarts Merch.
I don't consider myself an expert on these subjects by any stretch, however I recently read an interesting bit from Geoff Zatkin describing the trials and tribulations of designers and the gaming industry. He's done work on EQ and EQ2, so the references should be suitable. If you're too lazy to read it yourself (I would be), it summarizes to read: "Games cost lots of money and deadlines run the show". Players, expect the CU to go live for RotS. It will likely be horrible, as most polled agree the thing is unretrievably bad, and will be tweaked/tested while in live.
SOE, many are here unanimously pleading with you to do things right. Scrap your bad ideas and take your time before you end up scrapping your entire game and staff. Too manycustomers arebanking on it.

The following letter from our president, John Smedley, has been posted:
Hello Everyone,
First off, I'd like to say thanks for all of the wonderful ideas we received from you after my last posting. Having this ongoing dialogue is something SOE is committed to in a major way, and it's one of the biggest things you all asked for. So you'll see an increase in our public presence, not just on our boards, but on a lot of the fansites, as well. And we've created a new position within our ranks, the Director of Community Relations, specifically to prioritize you, the community, within our service offerings. Alan Crosby, previously EQ Community Relations Manager, will be stepping into this role, and all of SOE's community managers and representatives will report to him, while still maintaining close ties to the game teams, of course. Under this new structure, we will become even more responsive, even more dedicated to customer focus!
I'd like to give you a general update on our games this posting:
Since my last post, we launched our first Adventure Pack for EverQuest II "The Bloodline Chronicles"and over half our player base is already playing it! We are committed to releasing new content between Expansion Packs that goes beyond our live updates, and so we'll continue to release these Adventure Packs on a regular basis -- a first for our industry.
The EQII team is still hard at work on the existing game, and I think that all of the new content the team has added since launch is pretty amazing. In the past few weeks alone, we've added several new high level raids, an in-game mail system, Mentoring (something we're really excited about), two additional character slots for all subscribers, and we just added the new merchant system, which will allow players to sell items in game without having to leave their computer running. That's on top of the usual game additions -- dozens of new quests, spells, items, tradeskill recipes, etc. You can expect us to keep up this pace for a long time to come. Another part of the EQII team is hard at work on our first Expansion Pack, coming out later this year. We've taken a lot of your recent ideas and feedback into account, and we're working on some innovative ways characters can move and interact with the environment. Also, we're taking the first step towards introducing PvP competition with the introduction of a new type of combat!
In Austin, our Star Wars Galaxies™ team is focused on a big change to the game's combat system. The "Combat Upgrade" is now live on the SWG test server, and it's getting very positive feedback from the SWG playerbase. The team is also putting the finishing touches on Star Wars Galaxies™: Episode III Rage of the Wookies™, which launches in less than a month. The SWG playerbase is very strong, and we're continuing to put a lot of effort into making Star Wars Galaxies™ even better and adding new content all the time. The latest expansion pack adds Episode III content into the universe -- something our SWG players were asking for!
There's also a lot of action on EverQuest. We're consolidating many of the servers to keep the game an exciting place to be, and we are investing a lot of time and effort in making this game an even better experience for its many fans. EverQuest just had its 6th anniversary on March 16th. It's very gratifying to see such a strong demand for this game, but when you look at how much of an impact EverQuest has had on so many people's lives not to mention the entire industry it's not very surprising. We continue to hear remarkable stories of how people are touched by the game. In fact, we just had a player name her daughter Firiona!
One other subject I wanted to touch on is our Customer Service department. We've made some significant changes, and I'm proud to say our average telephone hold times are now 5 minutes or under. And our in-game response times are among the best in the business! We know how important this is to our players, and we will continue to focus on decreasing these response times even further.
We're going to have a lot of new things to talk about in the upcoming months. Our games continue to thrive, and we have a bunch of exciting developments coming out of our San Diego, Austin and Seattle studios. We're enjoying the present and looking toward a very bright future for SOE and the online games industry, and I wanted you to know that we truly appreciate your support and feedback, and we're listening! We're here to entertain you.
Thanks,
John Smelley

New Icons = Good Idea, but not SWG. I like the simple icons because they are very easy to recognize, and you do not have to interpret the dude on a horse to undertand it.
New Weapons = Awsome, and guess what, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE NEW COMBAT SYSTEM!
New Combat = I have given my input several times, but I will say it again. Do not turn this into an EQ2. Hell, you have access to my account info... Look at the last time I logged into EQ2. The two action combat queue is WAY to small to get any kind of chat in before you have to hit another button. The new non-medic medpacks do not help doctors or combat medics, but make us more useless. Not only that, but you are forcing us to change professions to craft the medicines we have loved. Fill my inventory back up with my buff packs, rez kits, poisons, etc. and let all the people who do not want to group with me die. The armor system needed changed, the combat professions needed balance, but the entire game did NOT need changed. (Notice I said professions needed balance, not the combat system)
I know you will go through with this update anyway, but please, consider the loyal members of the game. If you lose us, you will lose the experienced weaponsmiths, doctors, armorsmiths, etc. and there will be no one left to support the new players you think this will attract. Not that it will matter, they will drop the game after their free month anyway.
Edit: Forgot to mention the complaining. I complain with the hope of bettering the game I have played for over 2 years (Beta 2). I do not want to learn a new game, I want the OLD game back. Before the buffs, before the 80% comp, before the stackers there was once a balanced game called SWG. I would like to see that game again, not an EQ2 clone, which is what this is. People keep posting that we just repeat this because someone said it, but ask anyone in the Sinistre guild in EQ2 when the Tulco last logged in. It has been well over 3 weeks since I last logged in because I do not enjoy it. When I logged into the CU server for the first time and started combat, all I could think was "Holy sh!t, I am in the Oakmyst Forest again."
Now, to personally speak to Dracoress: I am glad you like the CU, but saying "I don't need ya" and calling us "pain in the a-- people" does not help your credibility or maturity rating at all. If you do not need us, then you obviously missed the MMO part of this RPG. We bring up concerns we have with the game and in doing so are called flamers, idiots, and pains in the a--. That is not a good way to treat people who for the most part are trying to protect the game that we love and pay for. If we are not going to keep the game in check, who is? No way in hell I will hand that trust to you, because you "don't need" us in the game. What abuot this John Smedley guy? Hell, he does not even know that SWG is based a galaxy far far away, let alone what is actually happening within our community. You have to realize it is much easier to say "the CU sucks" and let others who have thought out ideas on how to fix the game present those. I have given my ideas, just like hundreds of others have on this forum. My point is, complainers are looking out for the best interest of the game. Sure, they are annoying, but they get their point accross: We do not like the changes. We have offered our ideas, and recieve little reply in terms of actual change. I am not ready to give up on this game.
