Thread: will combat balance help us or just nerf us again?

im getting extremely tired of not being able to kill a tka or fencer as a commando.

lets look into real life physics.... so a guy with a sword runs at a guy with a flamethrower the guy with the flemethrower, 10 feet away, blasts a cone into the moron-with-a-knifge's face, the fencer is killed in an extremely painful way as the napalm eats his flesh.

In SWG... a fencer runs up to a commando, the commando misses, the fencer dizzies him enought so that he cannot move for anothe 5 minutes, you know the rest.

is this how the devs like to "balance"? making melee professions the strongest in a game set in a time of ranged weapons? i dont think melee should even be much of a part of this game. did anyone here see han running at a squad of stormtroopers with a stun baton? no, why? because its STUPID thats why, would you take a knife to a gunfight?

sorry if i get carried away, but i know you feel some of these things too. i am sick and tired of commandoes being gimped. ive wanted to be one even before launch.

another thing, why on earth do we have a flamethrower? anyone ever seen a green barret with a flamethrower? no. what we need is something like a Heavy repeater, something fast, opposed to every other slow weapon. in starwars the imperials have heavy repeaters, huge laser machine guns, like a heavy carbine almost. i think this is what we need. but you know, as well as i do, that the devs wont take the time to look into this issue, they see us doing 12k damage in pve and they nerf. we are SUPPOSED to be powerful, we have to master marksman and get unarmed 4 to be a commando, and commandoes description states that a commando is "unequaled on the battefield" i think its time to live up to that.

so i leave you with my question, do you think the devs will turn commando around and make it a decent class with more than one skill tree worth using, or will they just continue to take away from us?

Personally I think the Combat Balance is going to be a nerf to ALL of the professions. This includes nerfs in weapons and armor and buffs. They have already hinted at it if you look for the clues and in-between the lines. They are tired of people being able to solo things and have decided to put a stop to it. This is my prediction, and I think it is a good one.

LOL GOOD POINT! It may be "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" but there is still technology!....Jedi only use a light sabre because....um well....they use the force which make's them uber. But anyone else....who isn't a Jedi I might add, who run's at a man with a BFG with a pointy metal stick would be running towards their ineveitable screaming death......but that would be based on rules set forth in the movies. So in SWG I would have do assume that my speeder bike is intelligent and that my house is haunted.

Not much is known yet about specific details regarding the CB, but TH has made 2 major statements to me and the rest of the Correspondents...

1) Commandos effected majorly by the CB...more then any other profession...and that we should like it...

2) Many of our Commando Issues are directly addressed in the CB...

I wish I had more to go on then that, but like everyone else, I'm waiting with much anticipation to seeing what this means...

It is my hope that the new Combat Test Server goes online in the next few weeks (may be hoping for too much...no official confirmation yet) and we can start actually seeing what these CB changes are...

We've waited over 8 months for fixes...We've seen the bottom and we've even been one of the Top Professions (the flavor of the month)...I feel like we've pretty much experienced it all, good and bad...So no matter what this CB does to us, at least it's a change...and change, good or bad, is something...if it ends up bad it will just take away the "Wait for the CB"response from the devs so we can really start pushing for real change...and in my mind, that's already the best part of the CB...

Amen, Garvin! I'm really looking forward to the death of the comment, "We'll address that in the combat balance."

I do like that news about the comments though, that we should like the changes and we're the most affected professions by the CB. Hmmmm...now the wheels are really turnin! What could the changes be?!

I have to agree with Ster, I think this highly vaunted combat balance is going to nerf all prof's. Otherwise I suspect they would release more details. When it is all said and done I expect Commando's to get the short end of the stick (again) simply because of recent history. I think the only 'positive' thing to happen to commando's in eons was they fixed the HAR bonus's, and even then the HAR is worthless to 99.9 percent of commando's. Grenades and other 'heavy weapons' are also equally worthless in my opinion. They have a very narrow use if they have a use at all. When was the last time Commando's got new weapons?

I don't play much these days and with all the sweet nothings from the developers about the CB my interest in the game is drifting.

Mando armor was a nice addition but I don't see it as being worth the challenge since it doesn't compare to my composite. Very difficult to obtain eye candy is all it is.

I usually hate to be negative but what is there to be positive about? whooo hoooo. They fixed the bonus's on the HAR. thrill.

<shrug> It is the mere thread of hope that the CB will fix things and make the game more interesting. I'm holding off until then. I'm a master commando/TKA. I find TKA is more dangerous than commando in nearly ALL situations. I'm thinking about dumping commando and going for a more popular (among the dev's) profession like rifleman.

That's my 2 cents worth. Not the most positive but then show me something solid to be positive about?

"I dunno guys. I have so many hopes for CB, the glass may go fom being half full to half empty"

Im an Engineer on Valcyn (Master Architect) im also going into Engineering IRL (wether it be software or mechanical..)

To an Engineer....the glass aint half full nor half empty...the glass is just twice the size it's suppoused to be.

CB is gonna dumb down things..like Armour...who knows, maybe the SWG glass is just too big..and the CB is gonna bring it down to where it should be...

I dunno guys. I have so many hopes for CB, the glass may go fom being half full to half empty.

Either way, I'm excited! CB will defiantely effect us somehow. I'm sure some ofour issues and hopes will not be adressed. The HAR being bonded with the Flame Thrower tree, Grenades (Hopefully we get this looked at prior...Thanks Garvin!), and other things that require a revamp. But....

If anything, our issues will be brought to light and CB WILL be our cornerstone for change! Hang in there...things will get better! Especially during publish10 where each profession has a role in the GCW...cross your fingures!

I agree with you about the melee professions, when I first started playing and I seen a guy taking out stormtroopers with a warhammer I laughed out loud at the monitor, I thought is this Star Wars or Everquest the Star Wars Edition? Swords and Axes set in the Star Wars universe like in rl now are mainly for decoration and ceromonial not used for actual fighting, Master Swordsmen, Master Fencers etc would be wiped out by any modern weapons, so in the universe of Star Wars I just can't see them wiping out At-Sts and Stormtroopers by the dozen with swords, warhammers and pikesetc, those are weapons and professions of a certain period of time in history, as more modern weapons came about they became obsolete because they couldn't compete, so yeah when people talk about "Immersion" in this game I see these professions and shrug, how many other Star Wars games you see with swords and warhammers used as weapons, KOTOR not withstanding with vibroblades but this was 2,000 years before the trilogy.

I have said this before and was told "melee professions are important" and "they were in the books" I only read a few books soI am not sure there, but I do like this game, though I feel like I am playing Dungeons and Dragons The Future or Shadowrun more than Star Wars at times, I haven't played Everquest though when I explained this game to others they say "Oh it's like Everquest" and some guys at work who bought the game when it first came out all quit because they said it didn't feel like Star Wars to them, and one mentioned the swords and told me, "If I wanted swords in my PC game I would have kept playing Neverwinter Nights not Star Wars Galaxies ".

I think the game would have went over just as well with all combat professions having regular Star Wars weapons such as Carbines etc, Like us Commandos or other elite professions with special energy type weapons used for those professions and left out the swords and axes and other middle age weapons used in fantasy gaming, but hey what do I know, this is just my opinion and for the most part not shared by others..as long as your having fun in the game that is all that counts I guess.

Everyone will be affected by the CB so its hardly a nerf. Nerf is something done to a single profession that's too strong. I think we all (all combat professions) will be downgraded (not soloing red cons) but also brought to balance.

I think the CB will be great but a lot of people will scream nerf! and troll the forums.

I want to start off by saying I agree that melee professions are often a little overpowered in comparison to ranged, especially commado.

But also, this concept that melee weapons shouldn't be effectual is sort of a real-life biased opinion. The reason why guns have replaced melee weapons for practical fighting is because we do not have armor that can compete with the mighty rifle. Sure, yeah, we have body armor, kevlar vests and the like, but even that isn't so great. Even if you get hit with a bullet proof vest on, you're probably still going to get broken ribs, and most will only protect you against pistol fire - a rifle round will go right through.

In real life, when firearms first started becoming a part of combat, blacksmiths could make steel that could repel musket attacks to some degree, so for awhile, the sword and lance had a part in combat with the gun. Then of course, rifling was invented and gunpower was improved and armor became useless.

However, this is the star wars universe. We all wear these heavy suits of composite, don't we? Well thats because it works. The fact of the matter is, melee weapons are still just as deadly as they ever were, its all a matter of getting in range to use them, and if your body armor can repel fire efficiently enough to let you get close, well then it is going to work.

I'm just saying don't discount the idea as completely ridiculous. I still think commandoes (and BHs) should be more powerful, just based on the massive prerequesites.
