Thread: Do the math... The State of out Flamethrower.

I feel it is necessary for this breakdown to be explained, so here goes. I hope I have constructed the equations correctly, as I am not sure of the order in which the SWG engine processes certain things. If something is incorrect, please correct me (considering how much a clutz I am with math, I'm sure I'll mess something up horribly, but I'm trying here ).

These equations will give you the damage you do in the said situation:

In PvP against an UNARMOERED individual:

initial damage * 0.25

In PvP against an ARMORED individual with no vulnerability to heat but also no protection against it (I don't think this situation can actually exist, I'm just presenting it as a hypothetical):

(initial damage * 0.25) * 0.5

In PvP against an ARMORED individual with a x% resistance to heat (where "x" is the resistance):

((initial damage * 0.25) * 0.5) * (1 - .x)

In PvP against an ARMORED individual with a x% resistance to heat AND who is using the "Flameout" drink:

(((initial damage * 0.25) * 0.5) * (1 - 0.x)) * .1)

So, lets pretend we do an initial hit for an exceptional 12,000 damage:

In PvP against an UNARMOERED individual:

12,000 * 0.25 = 3,000

In PvP against an ARMORED individual with a 75% resistance to heat (I'm using 75 as a minimum average for serious PvPers):

((12,000 * 0.25) * 0.5) * (1 - 0.75) = 375

In PvP against an ARMORED individual with a x% resistance to heat AND who is using the "Flameout" drink:

(((12,000 * 0.25) * 0.5) * (1 - 0.75)) * 0.1) = 37.5

Now, just think, our DOT is now ALSO subject to armor resists, and at Master, mine ticks 1000 every 10 seconds (I'm not sure about this, as I have been too disgusted by the state of Commando to play more than once since this stuff was implemented).

To this dot, apply PvP penalty:

1000 * 0.25 = 250

Now apply armor resists (assume 75% composite again):

((1000 * 0.25) * 0.5) * (1 - 0.75) = 31.25

So, assuming a ridiculously high 12k average initial hit, our Real Damage Per Second (over 60 seconds, WITHOUT Flameout) in PvP will be....

*drum roll*

Against no armor:

325

Against 75% composite:

41

***What this means is that for us to kill an armored opponent with 2500 points in his health pool (average for serious PvP), it would take one(1) FULL minute (assuming you hit ONLY their health pool, they weren't regenerating health at all, and they weren't healing themselves or being healed).***

Working as intended? I'm sorry, but I highly doubt it.

To the developers, please don't take this teh wrong way! I am not posting this to incite anger, and I hope that my fellow Commandos will refrain from exploding like I have many time before. I simply want to make it clear just what the last changes did to us in the most objectively scientific manner possible. I understand that there is a LOT to do, and I do sympathize with your position. However, what you must understand is that we are paying to play this game, and there is a limit to how much we can tolerate. We Commandos have tolerated diferent degrees of "brokeness" since launch, but for the most part, we got by with our trusty flamethrower, and ONLY our trusty flamethrower. What this publish accomplished was the removal of our ONLY saving grace, and frankly, we do not understand why.

Very informative post, thank you for doing the research! I myself have not been playing very much (about 10-20mins a day now) because I don't want to drop my profession, but it isn't any fun to play this profession in PvP (Which is all I do... erm did). I

I don't PvP, so quite honestly, it means nothing to me. I love my flamethrower, I truly do. But if something has heat resist and armour, I just switch to something else. Remember, we're also master marksman, and have access to a large variety of weapons.

Currently in my inventory at all times:

SG rifle (cold damage), laser rifle (energy damage, AP2), Nym's slug-thrower (acid, AP1), trusty FT, decent LP, handful of grenades, DX2 (acid, AP1), republic blaster (energy, AP1), **edit**ing vibroknucklers (because I'm working on getting n.TK).

I have enough damage options that I'm rarely in a situation where I can't do anything.

Also, (SHHHH!), the heat resist only seems to be affecting the initial damage, not the DOT damage. I hit a graul mauler with my FT the other day: the intial damage from /flamesingle2 in my combat window said 8500+. The pop-up over his little head was 3500 something. HOWEVER, I noticed that every time the burn affected him, a nice little 5k+ appeared over his head. I was quite happy.

Unless you take up another elite combat profession, our marksman skills do squat though (DX2 for example is a pistoleer only gun.)

I didn't even bother with PvE, I was so disgusted after a few test duels (we are no match for a buffed master marksmen with novice medic by the way) that I just went into my house and logged off. Also, seeing as my account ended today, I won't be any further testing on this so it's up to you guys to make corrections to the info I gave. I'll be back after this vaunted "combat revamp" to see what's up then, but until then, I really have no desire to play this game.

Yes, I have n.pistoleer and the speed branch. But saying our marksman skills do squat is wrong. We have mindshot, headshot, actionshot, legshot, healthshot and bodyshots. We have fullsingleauto, roll shot, suppression fire and warningshot. I use all of these in PvE, in addition to flamecones and flamesingles and knockdowns. I even use intimidate and warcry quite frequently.

I can solo anything up to graul maulers and equivalents, and maybe higher too (haven't tried yet,) using those tactics. I am currently working on n.tk and n.rifleman for some more defensive mods, defensive acuity and flurryshot so I can combine that with supressionfire.

Soooo... so much noise for a blanket and a couple of drinks...

The problem of your calculations is that you do not use general numbers... instead you go for the 75% heatresist and a flameout drink...and the flameot only applies for the next 3-6 attacks and have a quite large filling.

The profession is not broken, sure grenades and the HAR is broken but atleast you know the HAR is going to be fixed in the next patch. I respect commandos in pvp as they are one of few opponents i fear. The implimentation of the blanket is not going to be the nail in the coffin for Commandos... its a fix that you knew would come.

The general problem is not in the commando profession, its in the general combat. Buffs are my major concern as all my attacks as a pistoleer is like a needle-sting on a buffed opponent. If i apply the same data for my profession my attacks will do just enough damage to keep his health auto-generating to full before my next shot hits.

TH have said that the major changes will come in the combat revamp, im looking forward to this as this will probably make combat more dynamic and longer lasting. I myself play 2 broken professions, smuggler and pistoleer and I really dident care about the bleed nerf, it was our primary weapon in pvp, but still I know that the combat balance will fix this.

If you can see a pattern in the updates you will find that they first adress the PvE problems and later the pvp problems. Just look at the bleed nerf and the warcry change thats coming up.

Im gonna try Commando out, and im not gonna come here screaming "We are broken!" .

Because just as JustG said, its gonna be fixed. And atleast I have some faith in him.

Im pretty sure he didnt mean flameout, but the food which name no one ever remembers, that boosts your heat resists by 5-15% and I beleive it is stackable...Not to mention 75% base ersist armor on my server is not only common, but the norm....And youre gonna "try commando out" And youre telling US what works and doesnt work in our proffesino? Right....

That would be trimpian, and thats 14-26% Fire Resist. not 90% as in the calculations.

You dont have to be commando to read forums and do maths, ive seen worse professions than commando. As I said, commando are one of the few i fear in pvp, and i battle them on a dayly basis The 75% heat resists armour are few on my server, so i cant make comparisons to other servers.

You should try out pikemen, pistoleer or mayby carbineer... now theres some professions that needs a fix.

Ummm Trimpian stacks with armor...so its possible to get 100% heat resists....

I have mastered Pistoleer, and only dropped it about a week ago...

And On another server I am currnetly a master carbineer, and a good way into pikeman.

Not to mention that Carbineer is getting some serious love next publish. Yeah Pikeman is borked, but no more so than Commando. Id say were in the same state right now.

No offense intended, but if you fear us in PvP, you are either Terrible at PvP, or very under equipped. My Kinetic composite has 75% heat resists...with one batch of trimpian...I could be invulnrable to commando Falmers....and well as of right now theyve got nothing...the Har will be a step in the right direction, but its basically a flamer with no DoT and a different kind of damage...
