Thread: I wish we had a Rail Gun certification
Kinetic damage, rapid fire, with non dot but high damage, high cool down specials.
Think Predator... you know that HUMONGOUS gun that shot like 5,000 bullets and tore down a forest?
All I think is, I dont want a nerf AND
fix the weapons that we have first (HAR & Beamer Rifle)
Yeah, that's the Mini-Gun, or Chain-Gun.
It's a real gun, decommisioned though.
A rail gun is a weapon which uses Magnetics to propel the bullet at EXTREMELY high speeds.
There are "notches" in the gun's barrel(on?), which when the bullet passes through, the speed is multiplied.
That's the Rail Gun theory, if I recall correctly.
Theoretically, Rail Guns pierce through all substances, except maybe Diamond.
...Yeah, I want one too.
Not to burst your bubble, but mini-guns are certainly not decomissioned. I see them all the time on PaveLows and PaveHawks, i.e. the MH-53D, E and Kand the MH-60D, E and J, depending on mission load-outs. I had even see a couple of FAVs tooling around with miniguns mounted on them, but they were never deployed since FAVs are supposed to fast and light, which is hard to do when you have to carry 6000ds of 7.62 or 5.56 just to feed the mini.
Now, regarding commandos in the imaginary world of SWG - I too would like a heavy weapon that does kinetic damage. Make it AR1, moderate damage and fast as the dickens, or AR3, slow and hit like a cement-mixer. Actually, I like that light and fast idea better, as we already have enough big/slow stuff.

Not that it matters.. but the rail gun was in "Eraser". =P
hehe i liked that gun,the biggest problem i seen with that gun is...."this weapon uses a magnetic field to propel aluminum projectiles at hyper velocity"anyone else see the problem with the way they describe the rail gun in eraser?aluminum?if i remember correctly alluminum is non magnetic, how do you propel aluminum with magnets? haha
but yes rail guns use a magnetic field, they consume ultra high amounts of energy.the power pack would have to be enormous.but it would be awesome.especially if you could make special rounds out of higher quality durralloy steel or some other substance.
i also agree, the commandos need their existing weapons fixed before they put another broken one in.
Well, actually you use aluminum *because* it is non magnetic. The magnetic fields are not acting on the projectile itself to propel it.
There are two rails, side by side, that form the "barrel" of a rail gun. There are a series of electromagnets all along the length of said barrel. These electromagnets are powered on in very rapid sequence forcing the rails togetherfrom one end to the next. The projectile is literally squeezed along the path and out the far end. It leaves with an extremely high velocity and no recoil. In theory this makes them very accurate.
If the projectile were magnetic itself, or even ferrous, the pull of the electromagnets would detract from the push of the squeezing rails.
Some rail guns are one shot wonders as the rails get fused by the force. More advanced ones, orweaker onesstill require considerable time to reset the rail mechanism. This is reflected in the fact that they often have the most heinous reload time in most video games.
OK fine, hehe I didn't realize what a rail gun was... they do sound really cool though.
However, I'm more interested in the super fast kinetic damage minigun type weapon. Something sorta like a carbine on steroids in terms of damage/speed/accuracy and AR1. The specials on it should be high damage but long cool down... think full auto.
