Since I know the subject of JTL will come up a few times at the Summit I'm curious as to your thoughts of an idea that has been kicked around for awhile...Profession specific perks for JTL...
Example:
Commandos would get accesses to higher powered weapons, but these weapons would require longer recharge time then lower powered weapons (like our FT delay)...
So...if you could ask for a Commando perk or 2 for JTL, what would you like to see? The Devs haven't confirmed there will be a Profession specific perks (beyond Smuggler) but you never know...

Now onto something constructive!
Perks:
*Particle Cannons*
*Turbo Lasers* (Remember those TIE Drones from XWA that had forward mounted turbo lasers?)
*Space Mines* (those huge bombs from XWA)
*Mines in General* (regular space mines, stationary*
*Automatic Gun Emplacements* <grin>
--Calling in a Capital Ship!!-- (hvy support)
--Calling in Bomber Strikes-- (similiar to Air Strike idea as a faction perk)
*Boarding Parties* (for NPC ships)
*Demo Charges* (dropped on Starships for a nasty surprise)
Basically...Heavy Turbo Lasers and an advanced array of Missile weapons!

Commandos seem like a more ground related proffesion. But aparently they have their roles in space as well. One of which is boarding parties on large vessels. This type of space content was not mentioned yet for JTLS but I imagine it would be implemented eventually. Therefore my vision of commandos in space are as advanced strike elements for assaulting large ships. Using heavy grenades and explosive charges to cut holes in the hulls of ships to allow entry and begin to depressurize the craft.

Yeah, I agree. Commando is definitely more of a ground role than piloting, though boarding sounds perfect for us.

As I see it, Commandos as a class would bethe PERFECT space marine-type boarding party. Somehow integrate some sort of capture (board and commandeer/disable) enemy capital ships, freighters, or anything else that's big and slow. Maybe only allow Commandos to use this board/capture function?

Also, Nick's ideas are excellent. It would be cool if you could only call in bomber strikes on an enemy cap ship from within the ship's communication center...

If anyone is looking for some inspiration regarding this thread...I suggest re-watching the movie "Aliens"...Check out the Space Commandos in that movie...maybe Planet Drops are a key to the Commando Involvement...Like us being ported to any battle zone for immediate immersion into a fight without having to stop at the Star Port...I.E...Battle goingpoorly, call in the Commando Squadfor a Sweep and Clean...

Wouldn't be too hard to do a boarding action. Have it similar to the Corvette, one person initiates boarding, the rest of that person's group get a "%xxx wishes to board the Enemy ship, do you wish do join their Strike team?" Y/N, and as you port over, the crew of the other ship get a "You are being boarded! Do you wish to attempt to defend your ship?" Y/N message. Port over some code from the old and disabled factional battlefields to assign people to sides / give them TEF against one-another, and bam! Instant ship-based PVP.

Hell, the Clone Troopers had dropships, not just the Colonials. Dropships should definitely be accessible to MCommandos and MSLs.
Seems to me that it's an increasingly good idea to launch a PVP planet. It'd go so well with a 100% PVP space sector as I hear rumour of.

something i feel strongly about.
i have always felt that the role of commando, when applied to space operations, is a simple one. as a weapons specialist, the commando should receive perks that revolve around operating weapons turrets or mission spec artillery. (ion cannon, tractor beam, etc)
we arent necessarily all pilots, so any profession specific perks should focus solely around opperating space weaponry etc. make the role of commando an indespensable one to have on ship. see where im going with this?

That idea of adding the heavy weapons deal would be extremely cool, too... It'd be reeeeally cool to see some big, bulky armor designed for passing through a vaccuum to board an enemy ship, coupled with some VERY heavy weapons... (Plasma cannons? Cool space stuff? Man-portable turbolasers
) probably only usable in space, due to weight constrictions, though... Hehe I'm dreaming... that stuff would be WAY cool, however.
That hot-dropping into a combat zone sounds nice, too... reminds me of Planetside
And starship troopers (book)
