Thread: Question about grenades
can everyone use every weapon, just that certification makes you better?
if not, then why is there a grenades branch? as far as i've seen, only commandos can use them (with certification) and i don't know anyone going the commando route as of yet. if everyone can use them (but not nearly as well as a commando) then i'll consider that branch as a feasibility. otherwise, i mean... why bother?
I'm enjoying my career as a Commando, but I have questions about grenades....
1) Do they get progressively "better" as you move up the Field Tactics tree? (e.g. glop better than cryoban, etc.)
2) Does the "cold" or "acid" damage type really make a difference against lairs, or is it just against critters?
Thanks for any constructive input,
Grenades to me are about the most worthless things in the game. Hopefully they get fixed. I only took 1 level of it so far and decided I'll focus my combat XP into my precision striking for now cause the dam things dont seem to do crap when they do hit and miss most the time. I too would like to hear from the masters out there on this one if they just plain out get any better.
I heard about the "self-incapacitation skill" and thought it was funny untill the other day I got myself with it. Ideal range was at 10m and blast radius was 8.5m so I thought at 10m I was safe. Amazing that it did no damage to the nest but incapped me instantly, of course, I was already beat up by the rediculous HAM cost.
as for getting better i do not know i never used any till proton, and proton misses a lot but still hits fairly well, damage varies depending on wether it was splash or direct hit
a note, be careful when using grenades... do NOT use them on something running towards u... i did this the first time i tested a proton grenade and by the time it exploded the moving creature had made it very close to me so the explosion incapped me and killed the creature... yes you can incapp urself with grenades...
Yes, they will get better - at least stat-wise. Cryobans top out around 800 damage (Cold) while Glops go into the 1800 range at best (Acid).
Thermal and Proton Grenades are great from what I gather from my customers. I get so many mentions of someone using them in PvP and they receive a /tell asking "What the hell was that?" when they're flat on their back.
Also, I wouldn't use grenades on Lairs unless you really need combat XP, and ifthat's the case, I'd go for the one with the highest damage at the cheapest cost - probably a C22.
Too bad you're not on Radiant though. You would probably LOVE my vendor. I have 3 pages of nothing but Commando weapons to sift through. Roughly 40 crates of Proton Grenade by themselves. Coming soon - 200 Rocket Launchers

Hmmm. I too started using grenades because 1) I heard I could get extra combat xp from the lairs and 2) well, 'cause they're grenades.
Because of the cost, I generally only use grenades on mid-level beasties at a minimum (mid-level meaning like kaadu lairs and shaupaut lairs). If I use them on anything less, I've spent a good deal of money for an extra 56 combat xp. Uhmm....no.
I'm going for Master Commando, so I'll keep going up that Field Tactics tree anyway, but just wondering if I had anything to look forward to, grenade-wise.
I didn't know about the self-incap thing though. I generally stand at 15-20m away from the lairs when I use them.
Grenades? I absolutely love Grenades!
Are grenades exspensive? Sure they are.
Can you incap yourself? You bet.
Are the ranges screwy? Oh yes.
Still there is nothing more fun than dropping 3-5 mobs at once while the explosion graphic goes off.
I found the key to using grenades is 'know your range'. You don't want to blow yourself up and if you're too far off the ideal range you miss alot, even at Master. I use fewer grenades soloing than I do while grouped. A mob that's moving makes getting the range ideal much more difficult. An agro (or better yet a group of agros)that is stationary (such as locked on a pet) is a prime target for grenades. Take a second to get to ideal range and let fly, then watch the fireworks. I also don't recomend queing grenades incase the mob locks on you and moves your direction. Personally I have enough Hunting to get the vulnerabilitiy info for creatures so this often determines which grenade I use, the different damage types make finding a vulnerability easier.
Also remember to use grenade powerups, grenades are expensive get the most from them. Power ups are cheap in comparison. I've also had grenades sliced, not very cost effective for a stack of 5 I'll grant you but with a damage slice and a power up I've had Protons with a max damage over 5k and you can't put a price on that kind of fun.

I use grenades a fair amount. The best use I've found is for attacking non-aggro groups when initiating combat. There's nothing like taking out a clump of your enemies around a mission base when you're covert.
My favorite are sliced, power-up'd Proton Grenades. It ain't cheap - but nothing in Commando is.
As has been said several times - know you're range.
Good luck.
Yea, you do miss quite a bit, but I usually toss a few in a large melee. They are great fun and I personally think they are underrated and underused.

Does anyone else find the concept of a grenade - Miss - totally absurd? Perhaps if the animation showed us throwing it completely half-ass over the target I could buy it. Currently they explode right on top of our target. Grenades shouldn't ever miss.
I see one of two viable options for the devs:
1. Change the grenade animation to actually - Miss - by over or under throwing it
2. Make it so grenades no longer - Miss - (preferred)
We already piss so many credits away on our disposable weapons, lets seriously get realistic with the accuracy. Presently it is a bunch of BS.
