Thread: Artoo's Fire Extinguisher: What do you think?

G'day Commando's!

Just wanted to float an idea past you that I had whilst reading the DE forums. How would you all feel if R2 units (and maybe other R-type droids) could have a fire extinguisher module crafted onto them like the one Artoo has in the movies? Anyone with a called droid with this module would be able to put out your fire DoT out with it, although whether it would be self-only or targetted would have to be discussed.

Personally, I don't see this as particularly game-breaking for you and it's not intented as a nerf, merely an attempt to help give droids more varying functions. Note that this ability would come hand in hand with the fixes to droids allowing limited types and number of modules per droid, so people would either have their new, uber combat droid out (maybe one day?) or their 45 HAM R2 unit with fire extinguisher!

What do you think?

DK

P.S. I'm half expecting to get "flamed" for this but it's ok - I got Artoo's extinguisher to hand!

*hears the groans*

(I'm sorry, just couldn't resist!)

Actually as a commando i like the idea. First off, it makes sense since you gave an actual reference to where a droid had one.

Second off, i think there should be a limit to how many times the extinguisher can be used (45secdelay maybe? maybe 2 uses per extinguisher?) and a method of refilling it that would take atleast 1 min as well.

plus you would have to take the time to tell the droid to put the fire out with a certain command.

With all of this and possibly others in mind, i could definatly see a use for those droids without it being too unfair. (especially since after a duel most people just burn for half an hour and its just plain annoying)

Look at it this way, let a droid have an extinguisher, or let the dev's eventually extinguish our flame to a extent after people complain enough.

I agree with everything you post there. Having the extinguisher hold charges only makes sense, and make it so that it takes 5 seconds to put out the fire and can't be used again for 1 minute. It'd definately be something you'd have to command the droid to do, as well.

Like you say, to my mind it's not there to put out a fire in the 'heat' of combat (hm.. done it again, sorry!) but more if you manage to withdraw to a safe distance/after a fight.

Nice one. Any more thoughts on this?

I like the idea. As long as the extinguisher stays on the r2 type unit (45 ham is easily destroyed by a novice), I see no problem with people putting their flames out after they win or run from battle.

lol thats funy i dint know it would kill you but any way

i think a much batter way is

a thermol blanket that only BEs can make and use they have to wrap you in it for 30secs to put out the fire this can be done in and out of battel (why in battel becaous some ppl would try to keep you in battel so u couldint get it cured othere wise )

I think you people should stop beating a dead horse. If you don't want the flame dot then stay more than 16m away from the commando. That is the only way to avoid the dot and running into water is the only way to put it out. When i get a droid that will heal my bleeds from all other weapons then everyone else can have their halon firing R2.

Fire extinguishers do not kill you, haha. Me and my friends used to spray each other with them, and as far as I know we're all still alive. Maybe some types of extinguishers use a reagent that can consume enough oxygen to kill a person, but I've never seen or heard of one.

That's a brilliant and original idea... and it makes sense.Perhaps you could even build off of this for other droids, such as 21-B medical droids being able to apply first aid (I mean, they are medical droids after all.)

"You do realize that spraying someone with a fire extinguisher will kill them right? Fire consumes oxygen, and the reagent in extinguishers gets rid of that 02, which we also consequently breathe. It would make anice weapon though."

Not necessarily, it depends on what type of extinguisher it is. There are several different types, some of which aren't harmful to others. And before anyone tries to bring realism into this, remember, this is Star Wars where you can hear explosions in space.

Star Trek too! The producers decided the viewing audience would think it was "unrealistic" if the visual effects didn't have sounds to go with them. /Sigh

Only space movie ( possibly discounting VERY recent ones, but I doubt that) that has ever been realistic in this respect was 2001: A Space Odyssey.

/sigh again

Unrealistic...

GREAT IDEA! People might not want to risk loosing droids in PvP hehe.

Great idea, but I agree that it would also be a nice addition to the Med Droids.... It would actually BALANCE things though, might be hard for the Devs to swallow. And by balance I mean that no one loses and everyone benefits from it. Commandos don't have to worry about the DOT being put out in combat, unless someone really didn't mind losing their droid, and DE's get a product that EVERYONE would want.

But the effect does need a timer. 5sec to put out fire, one minute recharge sounds good.

And for the daring, make an Advanced Extinguisher with a VERY NARROW area of effect, like 5m around the target or something. The catch is, it uses a more advanced agent to put out the fire and will cause every one in the AOE to either become stunned, take damage (from the lack of oxygen, or something of that sort.

Just my 2 bits....

What this boils down to is very simple; paper, scissors, rock. The idea you mention is a step in the right direction. All this nerfing and rebalancing to make all professions equal is just crap. Do you really expect a master dancer to do the same amount of damage as a commando? I think not. Everyone has his/her place. And likewise, every profession should have a nemesis. Every disease should have a cure. Every ying should have a yang. You get my point? That is the way balancing should be. Not by crippling a character class with a 2.5X damage modifier against all melee. It should have been more realistic, like 1.5X, or just against other player characters. So the next time you think it would be a good idea to reduce the amount of damage the TKA can do with a special, think about what would make him shake in his composite boots. An it better not be "everything".
