Thread: Commando, what are we?
Me, I see us as a WW2 Commando.
Why? Because Storm Commando and Mandalorian Mercenaries both are built on that concept.

Well, it seems we're in need of a discussion of the role and place of Commando, in the Star Wars world.
It seems we've been diverted from being something "elite" in the Star Wars lore, into the regular grunt who had to carry the MG in the infantry squad. Not quite a commando is it?
but thats how it looks right now, with the only things we ask for, is to have weapons, and more weapons and more damage, more fixes...But on what purpose?
We don't even know who we are in Star Wars, unless ya'll think "Commando" is that regular joe whos slaving with carrying that MG in the squad, while the rest of the joes havefun.
Mandolorian Merceneries. Well, not exactly, but yes, I think the concept is right. I think the prereqs are correct as they stand for a group of guys (and gals)that specialize in various weapon types at range, and you still don't even think about picking a cantina room fight within close quarters. I also think there is merit in as was stated in a previous post, the idea that Jango went melee without ever dropping his guns. That could have some legs soto speak. If commando were to be a better bridge between melee and ranged, that would certainly make it very unique.
I think the bigguns are neccesary, I think we are more or lessheavy weapons specialists, but that doesn't provide a theme, a feel, or a role. We want and deserve all of those things. Every profession should have a super nifty ability or two that makes it feel unique, and special. Riflemen can disappear off radar to snipe, very cool. Smuggler can fiegn death- not what it used to be, but still very very cool. TK's can heal wounds and buff as well as center themselves to tank, - meditate is a really cool ability. Every class should have stuff like this, and we are among the classes that do not. I want the big guns, yes. But I want a lot more than that. I hope we get some changes that will make every commando glad they stuck it out. Not because we suddenly become the most powerful class in the game, but because we live up to the image at last and everyaspect of this profession is "fun".If the developers are doing a good job, astromech stats will show a nearly even split between all professions IMHO. Couldn't be much further from that than it is right now, but I hope that's what they have in mind.
#1: storm commando: could you expand on what they did? i'm not too informed on what they are.
#2: mandalorian mercenary just seems like a paladin type class, based on heavy armor. and of course, to bounty hunters, mandalorian probably means it belongs to them.
#3: do you mean like the special forces of today? trained to disapear behind enemy lines, train locals to fight a guerilla war, placing traps, and survive off of the wilderness? since that seems to be what rangers are headed for.
#4: of course, who can argue with #4, a big gun only.
personally, i'd like to see commando as a first strike kind of profession. perhaps akin to a SWAT team.
Storm Commando:
From a book:
The natural enemy of the Rebel Infiltrators and one of the most feared stormtrooper units, the Imperial storm commandos, shadow troopers, or black armored scout troopers were originally trained by the very man who whipped the Rebel scum's SpecForce units into shape: Former Imperial officer Crix Madine.
Madine began his career in the Imperial Army, volunteered for special missions, was assigned to a crack unit, and rose through the ranks to eventually command his own battalion. After the battle of Yavin the Emperor commanded that a special corps of commando stormtroopers be created to combat the Rebellion. The stormtrooper corps were apparently unable to do so within their own training structure, and Madine was assigned the task of forming units and training stormtroopers in the skills and disciplines of commando tactics. Madine found them quite able to learn, and established the machinery of storm commandos in only a few months. Shortly after the first storm commando units were deployed Madine were involved in a corruption scandal. The fear of being brought to justice by the Imperial system, made him defect to the Rebellion were he now works as a mercenary general.
The machinery he created before turning traitorous remained in place. The storm commandos were soon used in siege-breaking operations, extractions, sabotage, and pre-assault operations. Like other elite stormtrooper units, storm commandos are trained to be fairly self-sufficient, and are able to maintain their own gear and health.
A unit of storm commandos can range from 4 to 40 troopers. Typically, one quarter is a line unit, with the standard attributes and skills. A second quarter is the assault team, trained to operate vehicle blasters and artillery. Another quarter is designated the saboteur team, and has extensive stealth, demolitions, and anti-security training. The last quarter is the tech team, able to repair or jury rig a vast array of technology.
Although highly effective, storm commando units are not numerous, not even compared to Army special missions. Their numbers are growing, however, and present an increasing threat to the New Republic.

WW2 Commando, and the image we have of commandos today RL:
From training of the original WW2 Commandos:
After arrival at the Centre, the trainees were taught tactics, war techniques, and devised many new ones. The trainees used the latest weapons and equipment and trained to be experts in handling captured weapons. They were also taught unarmed combat and survival skills in the unpredictable mountain climate of Lochaber. They trained in physical fitness, survival, orienteering, close quarter combat, silent killing, signalling, amphibious and cliff assault, vehicle operation, weapons (including enemy) and demolition

Now see why Ranger is stepping on Commando toes? Star Wars and RL has a standard for commando beyond being the "Machineguntrooper in a infantrysquad" that we've been lumped into. We've been called commando, while everyone, wrongfully associate Commando with Arnold, as a clumsy, bigheaded, bigmuscled unkillable piece of meat with big weapons and no elegance and ability to keep silent when he does the job.
If we are to be Commandos, we need to see beyond Arnold, and do our best to get the commando role, not get the average joe with the heavy gun role. As thats a regular infantry man...

To be honest right now, I don't know what the heck we are...
Laughable.
We are very laughable.
I can almost hear all the Jedi giggling their heads off at us from here.
Well, we better find out then.
Before we know what we are, we can't bloody well build the mechanics can we?
"are we building a train? No a plane? I thought we were building a ship!"
"Crud, we built something that aint working in this century"

The more and more I look at it, the more I think that the Rangers are going to be exactly what a commando is supposed to be.
We can bring that up to SOE, but you know they won't make us work like the rangers, and it's doubtful they'd scale back what they're doing for ranger in favor of us.
I'd always hoped we'd end up being like the guys in Republic Commando, but that's never going to be us, I can see this now. I doubt anyone knows what we are anymore, aside from broken. We all know what we're supposed to be, but SOE sees that as the rangers.

Dont know...how the idea of a support profession has panned out, they may very well be in the same boat that we are right now in.
