Thread: Commando, what are we?
if i compare the prof in this game with the kits of BF2 it will be
ranger as SF,
riflemen as sniper.
carbine as assult.
doc/CM as medic
and i see commando as sopport the guy in the back shoting the big gun.
but if you want me to compare to a MMO, i think we fit the role as the mage from world of warcraft. no i don't mean that we need top hats but the role as the mage as bust damage and aoe skills (they have the best aoe skills in the game) what the mage do is ues they powerful attack in small time. they have very powerful attacks so it will be easy to get agro so do less powerful attack so the tank won't loes agro.
so in short we should be high damage, low speed, 2 defense and 1 CC but we should have at least 1 CC move.
also i have played a mage and it is my fravite class in WoW. i can compare all of the classes in wow to this game.and i know it is very taboo here with compareing to other MMO's.

no i don't think a rename will sit well with everyone. but a better name will be assult trooper.

Not every game do you get the same skins or character names, it depends on the map/faction you're playing. And you know what? I saw Heavy Trooper...Shock Trooper...pretty much renditions or the same exact names that -we- have.
To be honest, thats how we should be...we're slow in speed, slow in firing rates, we're limited in amount of shots we have (SAC), but we *should* have a big bang with our explosives. All that would equal support, because like the Shock Trooper in SWBF II...its somewhat hard (unless if you're skilled) to survive long enough by yourself. Hence we're not a stand-a-lone.
Pretty much exactly what we are, but we have less explosives to play with...and a no go on the damage. It seems that we're not supposed to even be a damage dealer anymore...just support...whatever the heck *that* is.
honestly, i would have gone with option #4.
we will never be any of the other choices. they are much too involved for the game , and ultimately, allof the ranged professions are represented by the weapons they carry. pistoleers are fast, riflemen have long range, and carbineers have a high fire rate. as commandos, we really would be at our best if we were known for big, seriously powerful guns.
if this were WoW or some other anachronistic game, we would be the guy carrying a fricken siege engine over our shoulder. in the 1800s, we would be the guy who wheels a little cannon to every battle. and yes, in a modern era, we would carry Jesse's minigun or Arnold's grenade launcher.
let me give you a new twist on the whole commando idea:
Our whole weapon thing wouldnt be such a big problem if we had our own specials to go with them. our weaponry becomes our specialty- we have a gun for every possible situation we could ever encounter. some BH wants some firepower to take down a jedi? he invites a commando with an acid stream launcher. a bunch of rebels need some imperial crowd control? they bring a commando with a flame thrower. a guild wants to run the deathwatch bunker so they bring a commando with a rocket launcher.
everything is vunerable to something. we have the luxury of carrying high power weapons that can cater to every weakness. we should be getting back to back to this (how everything was supposed to be back in 2003), especially now that more of our weapons are working the way they should. remember when the only working thing we had was the flamethrower? weve come up since then. with the next couple of tweaks, we could have our working profession again.
See the thing is there are so many types of Commandos, like Rebel Commandos, Storm Comamndos, Mandalorian Super Commandos, etc.
Now at this moment we are basically the Heavy Weapons Specialist. So we have the Rocket Launcher and other massive damage weapons. Sad thing is there all quite pitfully weak when we are all full aware of how powerful weapons should be. The Rocket Luancher if it gets a direct hit should kill anything or pretty damn close. If not the sheer force should be able to knock down your enemy. Grenades. Still pretty deadly. There must be some reason why Jabba and all his men freaked when they saw a Thermal Detonator.
We all know full well how good our weapons should be. Sadly there about some worst, which I think is just about as bad as Jedi everywhere.
In general I support Commando be the Heavy Weapons soldier, the guy with the E-Web (Why don't we have this!), the Rocket Launcher, the Flamethrower. We are as Nick said a lot like the Shock Trooper in SW Battlefront. The Shock Trooper carries a big powerful Rocket Launcher, great against vehicles, and if your good and hit enemy infantry will kill them though that is hard. However those Shock Troopers have Grenades (Rebels have mines), and a Pistol. Meaning they are more then just a guy with a Rocket Launcher.
A Commando in my opinion should be able to put any weapon to good use. Be it a Blaster or their Fists, a Commando is always armed. However I think it is fair that we specialize in the "Big Guns" so to speak, because with the CU we can pretty much use all types of weapons.
So I think we should have Specials, mainly with a focus around lots of Damage, both Ranged and Melee, so that Comamndo is the Jack of All Trades for the Damage Role.
In other words Commando itself should be primarily a Nuker. That means Big Guns, Big Damage. However when combined with other templates we will be able to do more, and thus individually fit ourselves to the Type of Comamndo we want to play.
Perhaps some want to be a Support Role. Meaning a Template like Carbineer Commando where you can dish out Damage and States that will hinder the enemy. The Commando with the E-Web that would lay down tons of Suppressing Fire.
Perhaps some want to be a Damage Role. Meaning a template like Rifleman Commando where you roll out the Big Guns and fire away! The Commando that would Carry a Rocket Launcher or a Sniper Rifle.
Perhaps some want to be a Tank Role. Meaning that a template like TKM Commando should be able to lead the Charge and take all sorts of punishment, that another type of Commnado couldn't.
The Comamndo that leads the Assault and likes to fight up close and personal.
Perhaps some want to be Loner Role. Meaning that a template like BH Commnado that where you could take a fair amount of punishment as well as greatly hurt your opponent, but when fighting multiple enemies you are overwhelmed. The Commando who can best anyone that dares fight them one on one the Commando who goes it alone.
If you wanted a Stealth Commando a Ranger Commando would be you.
Rather then say Rangers are becoming the Commando, which they are only taking a part of, why don't we come up with such a Commando that fufills the other part. Sure Rangers are sneaky and got little trips and Camo, but they won't be able to fight for shat that much I can bet you. But if us Commando could be truley effective fighters, think what an awesome Template a Ranger Commando would be! Stealth and Firepower! Not the best Firepower.
See if Comamndo is made up to my Dream, it would not be better then anyone else. However it would either greatly boost your Damage Potential or work to Balance your Template out.
So yes Comamdno Rifleman would be a veyr heavy hitter. But at that cost they will have little to no state effects and is only deadly at a long safe range.
You see where I'm going. I've read a lot about Commandos in Star Wars and played a lot of Star Wars games, haven't played Republic Commando or KOTOR, but not real excited about the Pre Trilogy stuff. Plus there are somethings that I believe to be wrong with them, but until I play them I must shut up.
To be honest "Mercenaries" is what I think when it comes to Commandos. That's how we should be. You can blow up take with RPGs, Anit-Tank/Anti Air Missles, C4, Machine Guns, Grenade Launchers, Grenades, Guns, Sniper Rifles, more Guns, you can hi-jack tanks by flipping on to the tank barrel walking up to the hatch opening it and tossing a nade inside then climbing yourself. There's helipcoters with Gattling Guns and Missles, Humvees, Tanks, APCs. You name it. It's all there. Plus you get Artillery Strikes, you can blow just about any building you see, you can shoot whoever. It is the playground of destruction. It's just a Singleplayer and it seems better then SWG, since you can get the Soldiers to help you drive vehicles or fight in a location you need help with. Strangely this game is made by LA. Lucasarts, which is why for the love of god can't understand how we can be so terrible right now.

1. Some with AOE, but average damage for the crowd control templates (Commando/Carbs/Pistols/Smuggler).
2. Some with big damage but no AOE and a short range for the Nuker classes (Commando/Rifles) or to give a crowd control template some decent damage, instead of having to pick up Rifleman or carbineer or BH.
3. And finally, ability to use melee specials with a nice Knuckler/Knife or something at Master for the Melee guys.
In this way we add to every profession out there. And do a decent job of standing alone. I think number 2 and number 3 are the things we lack that could make a big difference in our profession. The ASL is already our big AOE, low damage CC enhancer. We just need the Flamethrower to be our big AOE damage at short range (fix the AOE). We need a master level CRAFTABLE NON-RARE-LOOT weapon for the big single target damage at short range (this will compliment and enhance Rifleman) that does a significant amount of damage more than a Rifle. Like a master level Rocket Launcher. Then, add in the ability to melee special with a Heavy weapon or some Knucklers (like what the massassi knucklers were supposed to be) and voila! Commando is useful as well as fun again.
