Thread: The reason CU combat is tedious

The situation as I have seen it on TC-EP3 is thus:


You see a mob that /cons a certain level, subtract your level from that and apply a multiplication factor to the damage according to the difference. You now know how hard that mob hits you and how hard you can hit the mob.


Apply a small factor of missed shots to each,the level of both Health bars, and your own heal rate (accounting fo missed shots when you are self healing), apply the small mitigating factors. Thus you know the outcome of the fight.


Whats the point in fighting? - just walk round the galaxy and do the maths.


Can you think of a more boring combat system?


By the way, currently there is no variation in the damage of any shot/hit that connects, I presume (hope) this is a bug and some random factor will be applied.


I know the current system is flawed but it plays in a much more interesting way and many of its flaws would be fixed by applying many of the profession changes, weapon/armour changes, and changes to the HAM system that we can see in the CU.

ALOT of these changes are for reduced server load.


the math being recalculated eatch shot, all the range modifiers on eatch gun, etc,etc. required ALOT of server side math.


the first day TC5 went live (before it was ep3) i saw over 100 people in a small area fighting... with no lag.


ill take the no lag pls.

If something bores me I just don't do it, so the having an interesting combination of skills that make a differenceand variations per shotchanges way out rank the lag for me.


Besides changing the weapons and HAM system would reduce the number of calculations server side.

Maybe if Helios reads this he could persuade some of the devs/designers/producers to actually play the game on TC-EP3 and feel the frustration we are experiencing and see the negative effect the level-based system will have on the gaming experience.

I loved last nights effort (the reason I'm nit testing anymore)

I wass only geting 20 combat xp per kill on the level 4 dreatures.

I'm level 8 so I though I'd find a level 8.

After searching for about 10 minutes I fould a boar that was level 8.

I did a /con on it and was told it looked like an even fight.

Every single shot hit for 37 points

Every hit the boar landed was 150 or so.

I eventually got my hat handed to me.


I couldn'tt even take on a creature the same level as I am.

Just got to say this since im sick of everyone over reacting. I have seen 3 devs in game playing on tc. I think its time everyone just cools out..... relaxes.....have a smoke and remember that this is testing. Screaming and blowing things out of proportion (calling names and other such childish behavior) wont get the system you dont like fixed. Just hang tough and keep /bugging away. If it goes live and ya hate it then just move on with your life. But i think its in everyones best interest to be constructive and purposefull in this testing. One bad day on tc (heaven forbid testing on tc) and everyone flys off the handle. I agree that the last 2-3 days worth of patching has been pretty bad and needs fixed but thats why im testing. I care about the game and enjoy playing it as much as anyone else. But lets try to keep things in proportion people.

Excuse me - I didn't call anyone any names. I'm not flying off the handle. I gave a sound reasoning based on playing the TC since the CU was put on, my comments were measured and justified.


If we don't protest about the basic and fundamental failings now we will be stuck with those going live - now is the ONLY opportunity you will get to your say, so you can't afford to sit on the sidelines in the hope that it will all be for the best.

When 79 % of the players taking the survey day after day say the CU stinks. therejust might be something seriously wrong with it.

Lol, reduced server load, I remember a time when every server was loaded at heavy. Now every server is loaded at light or lower.

I wasnt calling you out man. You were indeed construcive in your post. I just wanted to poin tout that i have seen 3 devs in game playing. One of which was working on the group bug last night. The rest of the post was not directed at you.

Last time I was on I was doing a decently wide variety of damage (versus the same mob in the same fight)--so that may have changed now. Of course, I also had a level 4 lair spawn a level 4 shaupaut with 108k health and a wild lair surrounded by level 4 hermit spiders suddenly spawn level 197 hermit spiders.


Big news of a sort, really...I guess. Not sure I can be happy about the overall though, almost no matter what.

Using different abilities adds a bit of variety as well. It's more based on actions than luck now. I personally like opening up with overcharge shot (which actually feels like I'm charging my gun up now, I might add...) then going to town with either rapid-shot, or quickdraw. (Level 14 marksman/ua4).


I personally never felt that randomizations in hits/healswere all that interesting, and more frustrating than anything. I'd rather have skill and tactical decisions dictate victory more than something like randomization.


In regards to the level 4 with a level 8 rating kinda thing I agree though. It's kind of annoying, especially as a marksman leveling up brawler (since you can't grab a better gun to up your damage like you can with a marksman skill).

Agree, Khog. In fact, I'll go farther and say that even if we protest and /bug that this POS will go live anyway. I have lost all hope for this game and am just letting my subscriptions all run out. Nearly 4 out of 5 have told the devs over and over that it stinks, and they publish that more and more are happy with it. There is your indication of how much they listen.
