Thread: Anyone else starting to get that sinking feeling about the CU?

I've been a supporter of the CU from the beginning and LOVE what they're doing with commandos so far (aside from that little scare we had from the last patch).

But I'm starting to get a little nervous. I'm afraid the devs are trying to get too creative with the changes rather than fix the simple things. Why the need for a leveling system? Have we needed one for the last 2 years? Most players play SWG because it DOESNT have a leveling system. Its a nice change from the other cookie cutter games.

The leveling system has caused one hit kills by creatures of higher level mixed in with the lower level ones were trying to hunt, then they have to totally revamp the entire weapon certification process to fix high level players not being able to level up in lower skills. Then this leads to utter confusion of what weapon can be used when and a lack of excitment about getting new skill boxes. +5 melee defense... woohoo!

There are other things too. I get the feeling that they're biting off more than they can chew and we're going to end up with a cobbled up mess when the deadline arrives for the expansion.

The Commando forum is the most sane place for combat upgrade discussion of all the forums, so I bring it to those of you who, like I, are supporting the CU. Are you starting to get that sinking feeling? Even though you like alot of what you see, are you beginning to fear the Devs might be getting in over their heads?

yes, like sinking into the muddy sand at that little beach I go to with the seal corpses....

They are getting to flashy and ignoring to core atleast some, although levels are pretty nice, it does indeed take away a certain feel, but adds in definitive power and ranking, but whadda I know?

Naw Shifty, I think that at least 80% of the player populace is behind you 100% in those feelings. (look at the pools...sheesh) I feel the exact same way for the same (basicly) reasons.

To be honest, I really think the devs have had enough. They're just going to WoW-i-cise this game until we all leave, so they can then market it to a fresh crop of players who've neverexperienced the old system before, and therefore have no idea how awesome it once was. We have a disadvantage because we had the old and signifigantly better crafting system. We had combat that wasnt limited to two attacks and didnt make you press the same button 30 times to beat a rill. We werent limited to attacking what is now newbie stuff because the magic floaty number over our head told us not to.

All this provided an atmosphere that was somewhat immersive and very fun to play. Yeah it had its issues, but the revamp should've been a system of changes to the bugged problems, not a wipe of everything we had to bring in a re-skinned WoW.

Put two and two together here. Compare the JTLS beta with this one. Huge patches were made to fix the game every day or every other day, and it got progressively better because the devs wanted to make us happy and make us WANT to buy their product. Now they just dont care. They dont.

Out with the old, in with the new. I guess we're all dinosaurs now.

This isnt SWG anymore. Hell, with the addition of all this clone wars bullsh*t they're adding its not even remotely related to the old game. I think its time we mourned for Star Wars Galaxies. It was a helluva ride while it lasted, and alot of fun. It will be missed. I'm leaving when the CU hits. Unless they drop the level system and this uni-cert garbage they're trying to force...I'm gone.

Farewell SWG. I'm sorry you had to die so that the antichrist could be born.

As do I. They've already changed things that were really far out for the better, and no doubt they will continue to do so.

I want to make clear that I still support the CU and for the most part, think they're doing an awesome job. I'm just concerned that with less than a month to go, they are doing things like messing with CH grouping, throwing the cert boxes out the window for most weapons and adding in this leveling system; things that aren't really necessary for balancing combat, but are kind of superfluous fluff that could be tinkered around with when they weren't on a deadline, that they are backing themselves into a corner.

I'm well familiar with MMOG development, and the vocal rantings of a minority who are completely opposed to any change without even trying it don't phase me a bit. I'm more than willing to give the new system a chance.

I just can't shake the feeling that we have an opportunity for the game to be so much more with the CU, but that we're going to end up with something so much less.

Really makes me laugh when I see people complain about the CU. The current system on live is horrible PERIOD!

Creative? How is haphazardly mimicing random elements from other games in any way, shape, or form creative?

Anywho...

Among my circle of friends, I was the most ardent supported of the CU - that is, until I played the CU. All I have seen is uneccessary change after uneccessary change. As far as I am concerned, I think this may just go down as the biggest MMO game disaster in history - and yes, I do truely think that it may be that big of a flop.

About a month before CU, I had gotten a hold of some leaked CU doccuments, and was absolutely amazed at how good it looked. When I finally got to see the CU, it was as if nothing i had seen in those documents had been implemented. The combat system has been dumbed down, and the once hidden and passive level system has become the main focus of the new combat system.

The upgrade seems like more of a downgrade, and the rebalance hasn't even been tested yet!

The "Combat Upgrade/Re-Balance" somehow turned into the "MMO Copy and Paste Festival."

I am severerely disapointed in the Combat Upgrade, and so is everyone I know except for one person who hasn't tested it, but for some reason maintains that it is still all it is vaunted to be. I have set my account to expire at the end of its next cycle, and so have all my friends (short that one fellow who maintains hope). Heck, my whole guild - 30+ people with some 70 total characters has or will quit - same goes for guilds allied with us.

Throughout my 2 year history with this game (check my currently banned account - Fondler), I have ALWAYS done the best that I could to see things from the developers' point of view, I have ALWAYS done what I could to support them. Hell, I even turned a number of my fellow Commandos against me a month or so ago by suggesting that the delays in the CU are well worth it. I am very deeply saddened now that I know those that turned against my were in deed more right than even they knew.

I am now left to deal with the fact that the game that I have spent countless hours (and LOTS of money) on over the last couple of years is no longer going to be something I want to be a part of. It makes me sad to think that my time with SWG may end now, not with closure, but utter disapointment in the way that the game that I once loved came to its end.

Many may flame (we are Commandos after all ), but that is how I feel, and that is what I think.

-Fondler

I feel exactly the same and so does pretty much everyone else. I can count a number of people who are leaving and will leave if somethings about the CU don't change.

I agree with wolfgang.

Oh and how many times to people have to be told before it sinks in? The level system has always been there, they just made it more visible.

Yes the level system was always there in the background, but it never scaled the damage done/recieved. Second, it was based on the weapon you currently had equipted.
What is on live is much more a Combat Level then what is on TC. It is ones CL with the currently equipted weapon.
As it is now on TC, ones CL is only based on the skillboxes you take, therefor a person who has only trained in melee (not even taken novice marksman) is considerd to be equally good in combat with a ranged weapon as he is with a melee weapon. To me, that is plain wrong.

I'm totally dissapointed with the CU on test as it is.

I am seriously considering canceling both my pre-orders and both my accounts.

I was looking at the feedback forum last night. One person stated tath 16 of her friends canceled yesterday.

He he you hit right it on the head. There's no saying there some flaws in the CU. It's way to basic and that makes it boring and to be honest it is not better then what we have now. We don't and I still suspect things will be un-balanced.

Umm I would not ever go as far as say what we have now is "awsome". In fact itsbeen soo broken thatthe only promise of the CURB is the only thing that kept people playing thisbroken game. And to those who have said this is a uinque system that we currently have, are correct. Yes its uniquly broken and who would copy a broken system that hasnt worked since it was implemented. It is a flawed design that could not be fixed no matter how many times its beenpatched. The Curb that we have now may have taken ideas from other games. But its a system that has proven to work. And our current system has been proven that it will NEVER work. So those who preach of how great and unique the system we have nowis. Think about why its unique, because the simple fact is no one else would ever want to implement it. Its not a system, its a failed experiment! The curb cant come fast enuff.
