Thread: Thunderheart & Garvin What is a commando?
Heehehhe. You should go thief smug... I got 3 sets of rebel owened armor anbd over 15 AWESOME PSGs...well it usedto be rebel owned
Now I own it...
So what is a commando?
If you look at the skills and abilities that you gain as a Commando, I come to the conclusion that a "SWG Commando" is little more than a heavy weapons specialist, or Heavy Infantry. At the moment the closest to the actual commando model that everyone will agree, however they may wish to not consider it, is in fact the bounty hunter. BH gives small ability to camouflage and to move unseen, albeit to critters only, adds mastery of marksman for versatility then piles extra abilities and skills onto proficiencies already granted.
What does commando give, a host of unrelated skills more suited to a "Heavy weapons specialist"
You have a Rifleman, a Carbineer, a Pistoleer, and then you have "the commando" which tell truth after playing (and mastering) it, little more than a Bombardier. I think this is acutally a current line title you get with field tactics 4, providence?
Solution, simply put, drop the brawler aspect maintain master marksman, call the profession Bombardier, and there as if out of no where you have your role.
Take the Commando, couple it with the same disc as BH, explore 4 and Master Marksman. Add camouflage/Explosive line replacing investigation. Give specials to normal weapons like rifle and carbine, I'd steal the beam or acid rifle to here like pistol and Carbine o BH, making the commando, an actual universal soldier. I'd drop hvy support, leaving that for our newly created Bombardier, and give a universal melee set of specials to the 4th line, possibly a specialist knife style that does sick damage while concealed etc.
So you get something like
Line 1 Explosives & Concealment
Line 2 Rifles
Line 3 Carbines
Line 4 Specialist Close Quarters
Personally this is something like "a commando" in my humble opinion
This leaves you in the same position to nick another combat skill to bolster a specific role, just like the BH, so no skill point issues.
You get to use the never seen Ranger Camoflage Skill....(Personal Camo only)
2 New proffessions. Without much fuss.
Commandos finally know what it is their meant to do.

The original vision for Commandos is that they are Heavy Weapon Specialists.
What I've done though is communicate to the devs that all the professions consitantly say, "What is our role?"
I'm excited to say the Keldarin has lead a strike team for the combat balance and come up with some very exciting stuff. I'm working on putting it all into a single article and make it next week's Friday Feature
Just a reminder, ITS FRIDAY!

Unless my eyes are deceiving me the friday feature is now up and it has nothing to do with the combat revamp..........
My expectations were pretty low - but they weren't THAT low.......................
He posted it on Saturday saying 'next weeks', which I presumed as did many others that it would be the next friday.
