If you're trying to figure out if you can "gimp" your Jedi by choosing the "wrong" FS skills, the answer is that in the long run, no you won't. The long term effect is negligible. In the short term it won't actually gimp you but certain skills are going to be much more helpful than others for awhile (melee defense and skills like that).

A complete list of the affects of the various FS skills is available in my FAQ/Guide... check out the link in my sig.

Ok so at the moment I have only 1 spare skill point, But have 500K of FS exp banked. Do the Melee speed boxes make any differance to a master fencer ?

YES, THEY GO OVER THE CAP.
This was confirmed by a friendly CSR after I submitted a ticket.
the +12 DOES go over the cap

Save for the fact that the server architecture does not support makeing attacks faster than once a second. There is no real cap on speed other than this... and it's not a cap by MMO definition it's a hardware limitation.
So sure you can have an effective speed below one hit per second. But you'll never hit faster than once a second.

Your question implies that the server architecture is going to be changed. I would rate this as unlikely, though since I am just a guy with an uninformed opinion you shouldn't pay too much heed to what I say.
A more reasonable supposition would be that other professions will be slowed down to allow the Fencer's speed to be more of a distinguishing feature. We can only wait and see what the combat pass will provide.
What is certain is that FS melee speed is useless to a Blademaster with a 4.1 speed weapon, be he stunned, intimidated, blind, warcried, dizzied, knocked down, poisoned, diseased, on fire, riding a mount, dead or doing an Irish jig.

I would have thought that this game would "out live" the server life, Meaning that what ever server cluster they created to host the game would have to continue to improve and expand so long as the game is still being sold ?. Dont you think ?.

I think the server handles an awful lot of updates every second. Turn on timestamps for chat messages and look how many entries come in with the same timestamp when you and a bunch of other people are fighting in a crowded area (Fort Tusken, NS Stronghold etc) and imagine that information being sent to every client in the vicinity. I think that once per second makes for pretty fast action in a game that is not meant to be "twitch"-based. And having seen what it's like in Bestine when the Tuskens invade, or in Coronet when the Spiderclan pay a Halloween visit, I think that I'd sooner slow certain professions down than double the amount of processing the server has to do in the same amount of time.
Having said that I take your point. Maybe the SWG clusters of 2008 will blow away what we have now. And maybe large swathes of game code will be rewritten to take advantage of the new hardware. Meaning that yes I can envisage a situation where Fencers might not be speed capped and melee speed might be worth having.
Right now, today, however, it isn't because right now, today, we are. Whether we still are when the combat pass happens is a mystery. For you it doesn't matter that much. With 500k XP to play with you can hedge your bets by putting the XP into any box you like right now and dropping it for melee speed later on if things are drastically different.

this is what i thought but since there is so much arguing on this topic I thought I'd ask
. I will just keep banking till I cap ... then I might change my template .... but I dont think that I will be taking on the FS skills .... I must be one of the only players that dont want to be a jedi (For the moment). Even if I change my template I will still be keeping fencer as its the best I've ever known
