PS, back in the good old TIE FIGHTER days, i spent a good portion of my time flying a skipray blastboat. they were slower than most people liked, and werent well shielded, but with quick reflexes, not alot stood in my way.

Do not assume my piloting sucks from a lack of sims/space shooters and reflexes.
My sim-piloting skills and experienceis not shoddy. I've put my fair share of time in: European Air War, Jane's World War II Fighters, Falcon 4.0, Jane's F/A-18, Jane's US Navy Fighters '97, Longbow 2, EE: Apache vs Havoc, EE: Commanche vs Hokum. Lately, I've started getting familiar with Lock On: Modern Air Combat and the IL-2 Series (beatiful game, BTW).
For space shooters, I've owned and loved the following: Freespace 1 & 2, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter (Balance of Power Expansion), X-Wing Alliance, X-Wing Collector's series (just to try X-Wing and TIE Fighter in the XvT engine). I've tried one of the latter Wing Commander games before Prophecy on my roommate's system (before I had my own). Prophecy I believe was the last one though...
My sim experiences I consider well rounded, even though I lean heavily to hardcore combat flightsims (non-combat sims are too boring, at least for me). I cut my teeth on the hardcore sims but have played alot of time on space shooters, which the X-Wing series dominate in that category. Many of the harder sims I've tried were considered top of the line to simmers. In XvT, I played that game so much, I've had in total kills (player and AI) of least 3000 X-Wings alone. Flying co-op missions in XvT/BoP was such a blast.
There was one advantage all shielded fighters had over unshielded TIEs in XvT/BoP and XWA (no multiplayer in TIE Fighter). You could dump all your shield power into engines but still have power to make useful your lasers/ions/weapons. Unshielded TIEs did not have this "reserve" of power to tap into. So, the players flying around in unshielded TIEs and succeed with them, had more to bring to the table with little defense. A sneeze at an unshielded TIE was as good as a deathblow. So, in reality, the unshielded TIEs didn't have an advantage in firepower, armor, or shields in the old days. Their only advantage was agility, and even then a good Rebel player in an A-Wing was a terror to unshielded TIE Pilots... damn those guys were hard to hit!
The last thing with my disappointment with JTL... I was maybe expecting it too much to be the2nd coming of Larry Holland's/Totally Games'X-Wing series. Maybe I made my expectations too high

So it would seem... but the Imperials had the beam weapons going for them as well.
You want speed? Try loading up a missile boat fully, putting all shield, lasers, and beam weapon to engines and enabling SLAMs. I don't joke when I say I hit around 400+ speed in that thing.
(This is in TIE Fighter when they actually had SLAM's work mind you...)

remember the good old days of wing commander privateer?
Pff, forget privateer. It's all about the old ones like WC3/4 with FMV and Mark Hamil as Colonel Blair! ![]()
