Would it be a correct to say that as for Commando specific issues, our concerns have been gathered and elevated, but we're in a bit of a "holding pattern" in our discussions until such time that the team begins to focus on our specific profession issues?

Basically, are we past stage 1 (issue gathering) and not yet ready to enter stage 2 (In Concept and/or In Development)?

Would it be a good idea to let players know clearlyin the profession forums just what stage they are at in relation to the team's timeline? Would it help them to tailor thier comments more specifically to where thier profession is in the dev cycle?

I think better communication would be enhanced if everyone has a better idea of where the discussion is at in this regard, and thanks again for the response.

That is correct.

Its always a good to let players know what is going on. Check in the In Concept forum is a good place to see whats out on the horizon, In Development has the Major Features which is clear indicator of which items are being developed. Once things hit In Test, we can tweak numbers and make some minor changes. Basically where things are listed in the dev cycle is a strong indicator of where the discussion is at.

"Backblast is that explosive force which comes out the back of a rocket launcher. It can be FATAL (anybody see Red Dawn, the brothers shot an RPG and fried the KGB Officer coming up behind them?) Inside there is no place for that backblast to go. IF the backblast does not kill you then you can rest assured that your next language skill will have to be sign language. Believe it or not there is a science to shooting a rocket launcher from inside a building. Mostly it involves NOT doing it, but if you are going to, the preparation is not 'earplugs'. It is ultra-sound proof helmet (which MIGHT save your hearing) and it is a flame resistant, blast resistant suit of armor."

While this is generally true with contemporary heavy weaponry you must keep in mind a few things.

  • This is Star Wars, not modern day America. Who's to say that heavy weapons in Star Wars even have backblast? (I sincerely doubt the HPBC has it, seeing as it fires a beam of energy, at the very least.)

  • If you're in a massive cave, the backblast would have a place to go - the current indoor restrictions don't account for the variety of potential indoor situations.

  • Remember, the rocket launcher itself is only one of our many, many heavy support weapons, and the rest of them should not be negatively effected because of a small real-life physics issue with one of the weapons.

  • Finally, remember thatthis is a game, andfor the sake of balance, the physics of the real world will need to be tweaked somewhat (and sometimes even ignored) to make a generally fun game environment.

And thanks TH for the reponses, it gives us a much better idea of where the proffession stands in terms of development and fixes.

/sigh don't you guys know that commando takes a back burner when it comes to issues. The more Star Warsy professions always get addressed first, like CH and Chef.

Well something has to take the back burner after all. Personally, I don't mind so much. For my part I am happy just to know exactly where things are, just for the sake of expectations. The devs can't take input from 30+ professions at once, and I'd rather they don't try. They're better off doing as they are now with DEs...focus on them when thier time has come...even if it means we'll have to wait. It makes sense to me and is fair. As for why Commandos are back burner and another profession is not, I can't speak to that. I don't run a development team. I give em the benefit of the doubt that there are practical reasons for thier cycle that are outside of what we as players see as "best for the game". Different things are "ripe" at different times for different reasons, and I can understand that.

Personally, I enjoy posting input on topics I think I have ideas for. I just don't want to do it in the wrong times or places and waste the effort. It's something I've vented about before (sorry TH), and that's why I asked for clarification.

As I see it, Commando is a hard profession to even talk much about at this point because the upcoming combat changes will alter any ideas put forth right now. I think this is where TH was coming from when he said to "think of the professions not as they are, but as they will be". We don't really have enough information yet to do that, but he's got the right idea there...not just from his point of view, but ours as well.

All in all I'm going to hold back on most specific Commando commentary for now. But, I'll be there when our turn on the dev operating table is here.

Thanks once more for the comments TH.

Commandos might be broken, but they're still not entirely useless. That's why DEs got first dibs.. They're useless right now. Probably always will be..I'll wait for pub 8, and see how it goes.

No I don't have a freakin sig. Just make something up and pretend it's here man. woman. umm...Whatever.

Back to commando changes, Saying that you know everything is broken and to wait for the combat changes would be something that we could swallow, but we started hearing this crap a long time ago. Looking at recent history, andthe current SWG testing scheme, it'll be ATLEAST publish 9 before the stuff that's going into publish 8 works right. When's publish 9? May? Instead of saying "wait for publish 9" you should be saying "thanks for paying to play a profession we admit was broken 6 months ago anddidn't bother trying to fix it till now."

This is a bad forum to keep trying to mislead the players on.The horse will only chase the carrot for so long. You do a good job of telling some of the truth, just not enough to be believed. I'd guess that a good 90% of the readers of this profession forum don't believe anything you say until they see it in the game. You could try to be honest, not absurdly and delusionally optimistic, sometimes. It'd help your credibility.

I understand that there are a lot items you would like to see addressed. Here is my best advice:
The HAM revamp and the meat of the combat balance is scheduled for Publish 8. When Publish 8 goes to Test Center, then is the time to get on, play with combat and post your comments in the TC feedback threads. Thats when all of these concerns can be addressed.

Ohh. Upgrade. Went from patch 7 to 8. BTW this is an observation, not a gripe. But Personally I think that the developers are using the combat revamp/publish blah thing as a crutch. If it isn't going to be a while then please say so. It's rude to raise someones hopes only to dash them against a steamy pile of monkey poo.

I have to actually agree with everyone here, asking someone to just wait for a (possible) fix in a month and a half is really odd (all too Microsoft personally, heh). In any case, there needs to be some sort of tracking system (like bugzilla) where people can take care of this stff (just my 0.02).

Heh.. have you read the CH forums? i am pretty sure you dont want the kind of dev attention they get..

Aside from that.. commando= heavy weapons. that is you whole profession. Grenades i hope come into play soon on that fix list as well.

Been there... Done that..

Raptor, I agree with you on the Lightning Canon, the Acid and the Plasma, but not completely on the Rocket. Also of note, the backblast from a rocket launcher is cone based. Meaning you really don't want to stand too close to a wall. A cieling also tends to make things rough. If I remember (been over 10 years since I had to remember this), a LAW rocket's backblast can be lethal out to 25m? An AT-4 about 75m? For the LAW the backblast should be clear for 100m I think, or 50m. I'd have to look it up. The point is that I'm not talking about 1-5 meters here.

It is also my understanding that inside a closed area, explosive force tends to be stronger as the blast goes the path of least resistance. If there is no path for it to go. . .

Military forces are trained to fire rockets from inside buildings (at targets outside buildings), but a major consideration is always backblast.

Also I agree that things should be tweaked for the game but it is nice to try and keep at least a littleperspective on things. I can understand why the Devs don't allow heavy weapons in buildings. Grenades I don't understand. Grenades and Urban combat go together like heavy weapons and armored vehicles.

Although your reality based retorts make sense in a normal contect this is SWG we are talking about here. Only in this game can someone throw a poison farther than a rifleman can shoot. I would have loved to see the iraqi's pull camels out of their pocket and ride away. We could also consider light doing kinetic damage like the sabers in this game do. None of it makes sense. So why not allow the commando's to use what we were told to use while we are indoors.

Hmmmm.

Is anybody familiar with the term "Backblast"?

Backblast is that explosive force which comes out the back of a rocket launcher. It can be FATAL (anybody see Red Dawn, the brothers shot an RPG and fried the KGB Officer coming up behind them?) Inside there is no place for that backblast to go. IF the backblast does not kill you then you can rest assured that your next language skill will have to be sign language. It is ultra-sound proof helmet (which MIGHT save your hearing) and it is a flame resistant, blast resistant suit of armor.

I support the fact that you cannot shoot a launcher inside a building. Grenades on the other hand excel indoors. Short range, very good at cleaning out a room. You can bounce them off walls, roll them around corners, drop them in people's backpacks, etc.

And if it is an Imperial throwing the grenade you can pull the pin and throw it back!

But seriously, grenades SHOULD be usable indoors and launchers should not. However, if people insist on using Rocket Launchers then I suggest they triple the damage and the radius. Then it should get interesting.

Have a nice day

Better not fire a rifle indoors either, unless you have earplugs. And probably not a light lightning cannon, unless you're well-grounded. Also, how much room would you have to spin a polearm in a corridor?

Realism only goes so far. If it gets in the way of gameplay, it needs to be bent a bit.
