Thread: Welcome to Commando Summary of 9/5 changes READ THIS NEW FOLKS!!
We need to take the lead in solving any balance issues created by this patch. If we just sit back and do nothing, other classes will complain about it and we'll get nerfed back to the old days of killing bunnies (right Ivoni?
But testing has proven what the base damage is done to an npc barring armor and resistances.
Call it a base damage multplier. Feel free to shoot things with no resists to you or armor and write you highs and lows that you see on the npc.
Or just duel and divide by 75%.
FACTION PURCHASED ROCKET LAUNCHER STILL SUCK NUNA!!!
Bought one today and I know this.

Excellent post. Although this SHOULD have come from out correspondant(grrrrr),
You are certainly entitled to your opinion. I would point out, however, that my mandate (and that of all correspondents) is to keep the DEVs "informed on the major issues with the Commando profession." I am not tasked with editorializing or even posting my own opinions. My job is to listen to what all of you have to say and then take your gripes and suggestions to the DEVs and try to get them to come around to our way of thinkin' (possibly at gunpoint). Once I have feedback from the DEVs, I will post it here and keep you all informed.
So, information SHOULD come from anyone who wishes to post it. Ivoni writes well and posts informative material. I look to him as a resource, as well as some of the other insightful people in this forum.
Anyway, if you want to criticize me, please don't do it for something that isn't my job. I'm a poor cook, can't even draw a stick figure, can't hold a tune, my hair is graying and my wife says I occasionally snore at night. There are a few legitimate things to get you started.

I am not even commando nor do i plan on obtaining more than maybe novice (MAYBE!).....
AND I CANNOT AGREE MORE WITH THIS POST!
people only see one thing...the raw damage....without looking at all the facts. the delays. the time it takes to charge a weapon. the range. its still tough being a commando.
good luck to you guys

Last night my friend went out wearing full Stormtrooper armor and had 3 stormtrooper pets with him. He ran in to a commando that used FlameCone on him. He took ~3000 damage, two of his STs took ~6000 damage, and the other one took ~8000.
I am 100% certain this guy would not lie to me about this. I've known him for eight years, and he has been a strong supporter of powering up the commando (he's even made posts on the boards lobbying for it).
Either the game is reporting the damage incorrectly or something is seriously wrong. EVEN THOUGH I AM A COMMANDO, I have to admit that those numbers are ridiculous. Factoring in the 50% reduction for wearing full armor and the 75% reduction for pvp, that flamethrower must have done ~24,000 damage. Now, he does use a carbine, so he probably was subject to the melee multipler I've heard about, but even so that's way too much damage.
The fact that we don't target a specific HAM bar doesn't matter when we can oneshot people. The 9-15 second delay doesn't mean much if we kill everyone in the first shot.
I've heard some people say "we deserve this after all the waiting we've done." No we don't. We deserve what everyone else who pays $15 a month deserves, a viable and balanced profession. Squad Leaders still haven't been fixed, should they be able to command foes to commit suicide when their patch comes out?
Some people are saying "a flamethrower would incapacitate you in real life in one shot." The thing is, in a games such as this, realism has to take a back seat to balance. In real life, getting your throat slit would kill you too, but I bet you'd be really unhappy if someone oneshotted you in SWG with a Scout Knife.
We can't whine and complain about balance when we are underpowered, then turn a blind eye when we are overpowered, that's hypocritical. Perhaps just fixing the melee modifier will be sufficient, but we have to keep an open mind to the notion that we may have gotten too much love from the Devs. If things remain as they are, everyone and their mother is going to become a commando. Is that what you really what?
My question to you is... Where did he get those numbers from? 8000dmg? Surely those were the numbers in the Combat Window, and if they were, those are numbers before applying armor resists and special protections. Does he have a screenshot of those numbers?
I also think those numbers are from the combat spam window. however, if a player takes 3000 damage (the spam window shows damage after pvp reduction), they're gonna die, even after armor. if a npc stormtrooper takes 8000, they might die too.
Good post ivoni, I'm a pistoleer and I didn't know about the melee/flamethrower thing.
While I've only messed with C12 grenades, my hunch is that their radius should be bigger (10m?)
Balance?
I've heard balance used as the argument far too often by people that have no comprehension of the situational viability of particular weapons and make inane arguments like "well a pikemanshould be just as good as a rifleman because they are both classes that were put in the game".
Even ifskill point and experience poinst costs are equal, does it DESERVE to be equal? Why is it that a swordsman should be equal to a pistoleer. Personally, being an Indiana Jones fans... I'm inclined to prefer firearms to melee weapons that haven't seen military service in several centuries for reasons that should be obvious.
Maybe they just wanted to put in some variety and flavor... maybe every single thing isn't equal to every single other thing!
side tangent.... SOE went a little nuts melee professions/weapons in this game and with unarmed too. Whoever, flooded the Star Wars world with this stuff... go back to EQ. Sorry, TK'ers. I just don't buy into the dementedidea that a guy with no weapons can be equally as effective (or MORE effective) on the battlefield as someone packing a carbine... not even in a fantasy world does thatcome true... well, I might make an exception for Jedi.
In my opinion, the person that spends the majority of their time training and using combat skills... and has training and equipment to strike at all ranges should always have the advantage in combat. You can make your little video game anyway you like, but that'sreality. Commando requires knowledge of everyclass of ranged weapon, as well as unarmed. Then, the Commandoskills are entirely combat related. The whole class is about WAR.
Do the numbers need looked at? Tweaked? Maybe. But the end result MUST be that the Commando should never again play second fiddle to people that only dabble in combat related skills... in PvP or PvE, if this game is to have a viability, integrity, or appeal to market that actually has a brain and an appreciation for Star Wars.
Contrary to popular belief melee combat has not been made obsolete by the invention of the fire arm.The elite fighting forces in the world are trained in hand to hand combat. It wouldn't surprise me that in a Sci-Fi fantasy world where certain people have managed to make a melee weapon capable of cutting through armor impervious to some artillery and capable of bouncing back blaster boltsthat some of this technology could have leaked into other fields. It's not entirely impossible to think that if everyone used a blaster that armor would be more specialized to protect against projectiles then specialized cutting tools.
I also somehow doubt that they put in a whole line of professions just because some people like to get slapped around. It's just my opinion but I think melees make the game a little more interesting, I don't think you should be extra powerful because your prefered play style makes more sense to you, and I don't think anyone should be super powered because they took the class with the coolest name.
The reason the flame thrower is melee has to do with the fact we actually need unarmed combat for the profession.
The required unarmed is for the flame throwers melee damage, it is not a bug it was intentionally made melee..
