Novock-> What about grinding commando? Is there any alternative to grinding the pistol line or do we have to grind it in order to use the LP to grind up commando until we have a better cert'd weapon?
You dont need to grind pistols to use the LP. The LP gives Heavy Weapons XP. We have the Massassi Knuckler, but that is not giving Heavy Weapons XP and is bugged

Specific mods stack with general mods, so pistoleer will help both with general acc/speed and specials.
However...at this time, the LP is classified a Pistol, the Proton Rifle a rifle, and the MK's a one handed weapon. Although the LP (luckily) gives HW xp, it does not seem to use Hvy Weapon Mods...
Still unconfirmed, but our hvy weapon defenses are utterly broken at the moment, so its somewhat hard to test (since Im not that high up in commando...)

The past two days I've done some testing with Novice Commando and around there.
The Launcher Pistol is pretty weak compared to the Carbineers EE3 (lvl 14). I think the LP could use some additional love.
Since Commando doesn't get any own specials we have to get those elsewhere. I first got Novice Pistoleer for Bodyshot, but after a while I picked up Novice Carbineer (and got Legshot) instead, and had better success then.
As a lvl 16 Commando I realy felt the XP were slow to gain. Around 920 XP per kill and it took a good while to take down mobs lvl 15 on Tatooine. I only had acess to the LP using Legshot from Carbineer. The Massassi knucklers were a bit better, but granted Unarmed Xp so they where no good. Combat where challenging but overall way too slow.
I'll write another installment later today.

I worked my way to novice commando yesterday using a combination of grinding out exp and using the frogs for a boost. The new weapon cert system is a real limiter at times compared to what it was a few days ago. As an example:
Pre-change: New weapons in marksman at completion of a tier 2 box.
Post-change: New weapons in marksman atCL 6 and CL 7. When is CL 6? Well, I got marksman 2222 and unarmed 3 and was stillCL 5. So I'm assuming we need toget to at least one of the marksman tier 3 boxes using a CDEF weapon to hitCL 6. This is bad. We need the new certs at CL 5, not CL 6. CL 5 is completing all of tier 1 and 1 box in tier 2 of marksman.
Pre-change: Launcher pistol at novice commando, flamer atincendiary weapons 3, HAR at acid weapons 1(? don't recall exactly), rocket launcher at first tier box as well.
Post-change: Launcher pistol at CL 14 and novice commando, flamer at CL30 (? don't recall the number if it's 30 or 40), HAR and rocket launcher at CL 22. When is CL 22? I was0111 commando, novice carb, novice rifle before I hit CL22. The CL 22 certs need to come down to CL 20 (that's 1 tier 1 box in commando).
The weapons worked well with various ranged specials. The rocket launcherhas a chance to knockdown on everyshot. Launcher pistol has awesome graphics, after a long fight you have to wait for the smoke to clear before you can see.
Two things I found annoying: the acid stream graphics for the rocket launcher, and anytime you used the HAR within melee range you had a high chance to blind yourself. With the current combat system this makes the HAR almost worthless again since it's so hard to kite and almost impossible to avoid fighting mobsin melee range.

Here is the second part of my Newbie Commando thoughts.
After having messed around with just Novice Commando i decided to use the frogs to pick up some skills. IIRC I went 1111 Commando to be able to use the rocket launcher and the HAR. I also picked up 0300 Commando to get improved Legshot. This put me at Lvl 27, so I headed to Lok for some fightning.
Found a lvl 21 bird which I attacked. 127 XP for a kill that took a long time to take down. Very bad ratio between Xp and time invested for the kill.
I found some lvl 27 birds I took down for 1800 XP. Took forever using the HAR and RL to take it down. If a second bird had jumped me I would have been mashed commando.
Both the HAR and RL did about 660 damage using Improved Legshot, but it still felt a bit low, or is it the animals that has much Health? Carbineers lvl 22 Laser Carbine did about the same amount of damage, so it felt pretty equall to our Commando weapons.
My thougts after this session is that combat felt very slow. It's challangeing but very slow and the rewards (XP)are not on par with how tough they are to take down. Advancement feels very slow.
Without picking up Carbineer skills I wouldn't be able to be any effective at all. In fact, for someone grinding up Commando it will be a lot of work since one have to level both Commando and then one additional profession for specials.
All testing have been done solo.

With the ISP problems I had I couldn't spend significant amounts of time grinding novice so I diod not qualify for Commanod until the blue frogs when into action.
I did try to keep track of how my unarmed combat skills compared to my ranged combat skills.
Melee still beats the heck out of ranged. Unarmwed attqacks usualkly hit for 60 -70 points while my pistols - the cdef and the d18- hit for 37 each.
I could not survive against an equal level opponent nor even against one one level lower.
However my feelings about the unarmed and the combat XP grind are that if I had to do thisin the "real" game I'd quit after the first week.
The last patch to stabilise client PCs has introduced the CTD every few minutes into my TC5 testing. I haven't ahd the oppurtunity to get back on-live to see if that patch hosed thosesessions. I should find out tonight.

The LP particle effects got changed, so it's not as bad now. There's not big streamer or anything, and it looks more likea high velocity explosion launching at the enemy.

I've been testing with the Launcher Pistol, out away from everyone else. It still causes major lag, the changes are not good enough to avoid the issue. It is still to demanding on the game engine.

The biggest problem with COmmando at Novice is that the only weapon you can get heavy weapon xp with is the launcher pistol. The Launcher Pistol has caused major lag and CTD for folks in the past. It even had the rule for a while, which may still exist, no launcher pistol duels near Starports.
Being the only weapon usuable at Novice Commando it is going to tax the system to much.
The only weapons I feel that should have a skill box cert are the ones in the master box, like it is with carbineer, rifleman, and pistoleer. The way it is we are going to see a lot of increase in launcher pistol use for folks and then we are going to see more crashes and more problems. This will lead to either the luancher pistol getting nerfed or removed...thus might as wellstop it in the bud while we can.

For those starting/lowbies:
You can always get rid of it later, and pick up Master Marksman, then Novice rifleman, and Novice carbineer. That gives leg shot, head shot, cripple shot(snare)lethal shot and the basic things like rapid fire, aimed shot etc. It's a brutal lowbie combo.
