With faster types of weapons (rifles, pistols, and carbines), I always preferred damage over speed. Sure, you want to be able to hit fast, but if you tend to use a lot of specials (which I do, depending on what I’m fighting), my HAM gets eaten away like crazy.
When I up my damage, I seemed to kill more with my specials (remember damage multipliers from those), because of the slightly higher damage. This is, of course, when I’m fighting things I SHOULD be fighting…you know, those blue/white con nasties. When I’m grouped and we’re fighting things that should be Red Con to me (were I alone), I would have to go with speed, because I want to hit FASTER if possible (being able to pull out a Warning shot last minute can be crucial).
All that being said, on weapons like our Heavies, I’d want speed. As previously stated, it would help bring about a SEVERE drop in downtime between specials.
What I used to do on my rifles (well, used to do on one character, still do on another), is get it sliced for speed (sometimes it takes multiple rifles to do so), then drop a speed enhancement on it. I’d take my 6 speed rifle down to a 4.2 with an ideal slice (30%), and then down to a 3 with a 30% power-up (math obviously simplified).
That means a hard hitting rifle hits hard faster.
I confuse you yet? No? Good, please tell me what the hell I was just rambling about…the nurse came along and said it was time for my meds…
In the end, it depends on your weapon. I would say want for speed. In the cases of heavy weapons, they already hit HARDER, I would go for the faster. When using a pistol (even the launcher, for the most part), I hit faster, so I want a slice/power-up for harder.
Oh, and while regular power-ups won’t work on the HAR and FT, they WILL work on the Launcher Pistol…which personally I like…but I like pistols.
Cestus Virium – Little bit of everything at some point or another
Joar-Addam (Joar) Nessosin) – Brawler, Marksman, Entertainer, Medic, Scout, and STILL BORED after all that.

This debate may be a bit moot right now. They'll be changing speed caps. I believe they were saying something like 3 seconds for bigger guns. Which means we'll probably see a lot more people going with damage slices over speed. Unless they are low in the weapons skill tree.
But then you have to wonder. Do the speed reductions from skills factor in on the weapon speed only, or would they factor in when a special goes off as well. Special speeds being a multiplier of the weapon speed and all.

at master level the best is damage due to the fact that the you hit thespeed cap at master with a weapon that is 4.0 speed or lower.

It did get a sleed slice on it. I was just curious what commandos though about this weapon. Is speed or damage more important? I made it for my fiance and she wanted speed, so in this instance that's all that's important. But for future reference, should I work on damage more than speed or vice-versa.

Right now go for speed...get in more DPS....you'll see some people around here bragging about damage slices etc..etc..etc..Speed is where it's all at! Right now anyways!

I personally would go for speed over damage as it stands right now.

Speed, you're better off waiting 4.5 seconds after each attack to be able to heal yourself or whatever else than waiting 12-14 seconds and die.

Oh, speed. Mine has a 3.9 speed slice, surprising how much difference that makes...I'm tempted to krayt it for even better speed! Hitting more often for the same damage adds up in a heckuva hurry.
