Thread: speed or damage
Personally I have a FT that when sliced got damage, so when I put powerups on, I put speed. I think that the FT is most effective when your speed is enhanced. Bear in mind that when you look at it, it appears that you get more bang for your buck with say a 30% damage powerup, while in fact you probably will get higher DPS with a speed powerup.
Example: I currently have a FT that is 550-950 dam @ 4.0 speed, giving it an approx ave damage of 750 and therefore approx 187.5 dps. If I add a 30% max damage powerup, the FT is now 550-1235 for ave damage of 892.5 and approx 223.1 dps. If I add a 30% max & min damage powerup, the FT is now 715-1235 for ave dam of 975 and approx 243.8 dps. Lastly, if I add a 30% speed powerup my ave damage remains 750, but my speed drops to 2.8, resulting in 267.9 dps.
**NOTE: I am using simplified math for this to demonstrate the concept not what figures would actually be in game. We all know that damage as listed on a weapon are not what actually happen in game. Formulas used:
Average damage = (FT max damage + FT min damage) / 2
DPS = Average damage / speed
The answer is speed, from a pure numbers approach, but dmg may be btr for actual combat.
Start with the 4.0 550-950 weapon and apply a 30% slice to speed and dmg
You get a 2.8 550-950 weapon with a speed slice resulting in 268 dps
You get a 4.0 715-1235 weapon with the dmg slice resulting in 244 dps
This result says that there is less than 10% difference in the #'s, so you would have less than 3% variance in this SLICE. In reality it might be more appropriate to think about it in terms of having a higher SLICE % than which you get.
That said, a friend and I with identical hvy weapons both have opposite slices (19 to speed and 21 to dmg repectively). From the math above we can say that these have almost identical dps's (2dps different in reality). In combat though, I out XP him by almost 50%. Don't know why, but I think it has to do with the way SWG calculates weapon speed. If we both have similar speed bonues, he bottoms out much faster (at +65 he has hit 1.0 the max and I hit it at +75). Once at the max it no longer matters who has the speed slice, but only max dmg.
For reference both of us have +35 to speed, but the XP still favors me. If anyone can run with this a little farther I would love to know. I am thinking that he has to hit that much more often to do the same dmg and therefore gets unlucky with the accuracy side of the eq. All things considered I would rather do more dmg at a time and not have to hit as often given the range and accuracy system employed.
otherwise for pure "attacks" the damage is better
DPS is only really effective when fighting something that takes a while to kill. Speed really plays a factor on High Ham targets. But for things that are 1-3 shots (normal or special), speed is not as important.
You can do the math mentioned earlier but then do it over a period of time...say15 seconds.
In short, for high ham targets use a speed weap. for low ham targetsit may be better to have higher damage.
bikebum
Where did you get a powerup that works on a flame thrower?
The dev's have openly stated that Heavy Weapon Powerups were broken, if I remember.
Are you sure you are thinking about a Flamethrower with a powerup bikebum?
In pvp speed rules ,,,you can shoot someone and if it doesnt kill it instantly move on to next group of targets
to cone,,,i calculated it and with my 4.0 523-1023 on vs my 3.2 413-813dmg the speed one kills a whole crap
lot faster then my dmg one,,,i think i crudly calculated it and i was gettin like 13-15 seconds inbetween my
specials with my slow high dmg flamer vs my 6-8 second fast lower dmg flamer,,,,,,and the dmg calculater
for a hier flamer seems not to make a huge difference,,maybe like 200-500 dmg increase,,
I prefer speed by far against dmg
Yeah bobby being the idiot that I am, I didn't even think about the fact that my powerups don't work on HW.
That said, sorry for the misinformation.
Remember to count in the Speed bonuses from skill, at Flame IV its 45(45% faster). My 3.5 speed flamethrower is shooting at 1.6 seconds without specials. While my higher damage one is shooting at 2.2... but with specials I can deal out far more damage.
Depends on what your fighting, in pvp your pretty much able to kill anything with one well aimed FlameSingle2, so the faster FT is prefered for less downtime between specials.
speed speed speed!!
I am a Grenadeer with two flamers, one is 512-1018dmg 5.0 speed, the other is 404-812 3.8 speed. The speed sliced flamer cut my downtime between specials from 12-14 secs to 8 seconds! It makes a world of a difference when you're getting beat down waiting for that damned stim to go off after the delay.
