I agree on MOST of what you have to say. Once again,I agree.

But, what I'm trying to say, is, it ain't gonna happen man.

No need to see eye to eye, just important that we learn from each other. Thanks for the conversation.

I don't think TH is going to grace my PM with an answer.

Why am I not surprised?

I think the big issue we've stumbled onto here is this:

  • the CU/R/B isnt really the critical matter at hand, even though its implementation will drastically change the game.

  • people are even more upset due to the lack of interaction between players and developers. especially those who are responsible for customer service and satisfaction.

  • when i talk about the commando community's interaction level with garvin, everybody knows what i mean, right? thats how the DEVs are supposed to be interacting with the gaming community.

  • Granted, its a tier system, and we cant necessarily expect TH to come down and answer our personal questions, even though a DEV has been known on occasion to do this.

  • what we should be able to expect, is a high level of interaction between Garvin and the DEVs, who can then relay the information as necessary.

Back to my previous point- The CU/R/B isnt that important, its simply the issue the players have chose to rally around to gain ground on the bigger issue at hand- the lack of interaction between the consumers and the developers.

Please allow me to reformulate this to explain why this is important. Imagine a huge, multi-million dollar corperation, that sells its stock on the market. shareholders invest their money with the expectation that it will be put to good use, and will generate some kind of financial progress. in order to promote the process, the business puts out quarterly reports on exactally where the money is going and what kind of progress is being made. they also put out statements almost weekly, letting shareholders know the minutae that goes on within the company. do they have to do all this? NO! but they do it in order to keep the shareholders happy and informed, knowing that this happiness may lead to a further investment in the company stock.

Our own situation, though not entirely the same, is similar to that of the stockholders. we pay money to the company in excange for a service. now we dont see any returns on our money if the company improves, but what we do get is an improvement in service. The customer service program was put in place to provide interaction between the buyer and provider. Look at us (the players) as gamma testers. we go through and find the bugs on a massive scale, and report them in the forums. the next step of the process is supposed to be repair, and possibly a little feedback, and thats where the chain breaks. Just as the shareholders can vote and in part control the direction of the business, so to do we the players try to do the same. In fact, we are asked to do it. we fall short when nothnig happens, or we're ignored. in a corperation, this results in shareholders cashing out and leaving the company...

this is exactally whats been happening in the community.

Just as we need to show some pacience and restraint with the system, so to do the DEVs and SOE need to realise that we are all shareholders of a sort, and if our feedback isnt important, we can take our money elsewhere.

You just made me remember that waaaaay back in the day, at least ayear or two before the origional Beta, the Dev team frequently spoke about how proud they were about their relationship with the community. They had made mention that they were trying to not follow the pattern of other game developers that didn't have as much interaction with their consumers/fans...and that they had every intention of taking our concerns and complaints seriously unlike other games. Too bad thatthe Dev culture changed. I miss many of the old Devs.

I remember those days. /sniff

Anyway, do you think we could go back to those days if we start seeing the right changes occuring?

That's a good question. Some people in this board have pointed out that the new Dev culture seems much more result focused than the old Devs...but without as much emphasis on their relationship with the community. I totally agree...but these guys are following someone elses vision (Raph Koster) while bringing in their own way of doing things which seem (from this angle) to be different. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out in the long run, but I'm alittle pessimistic that the game will become anything like what Raph and the old Devs had really envisioned. The CU will make or break this game me thinks although I have doubts thatthe game will ever become as good as it would have been, had the old Devs remained as heavily involved as they used to. I hope that I'm wrong though.
