Its good that Tyrant posted a timeframe for the CU...The 6 weeks thing is the magic number, I think. To me, it reads in approx 2-3 weeks we will have alpha testing up and running, and approx 3-4 weeks after that, CU will be expanded. I could be wrong.

Its nice to see an acknowledgement thou.

uh... don't get your hopes up that the alpha will only be 2-3 weeks and then open beta for 3-4 weeks. Until it opens we will have no idea how much needs fixing/revamping/recoding etc so your 2-3 weeks could be 2-3 months (of course that would be worst case but possible)

I think you misunderstood me, or maybe I wasnt clear enough, either way, I am going to expound on what I said....

By Tyrants 6 week timeline, this is the way I see it shaping up:

In approx 2-3 weeks, CU alpha (closed testing/sandboxers only) will begin

Then, for 3-4 weeks, CU alpha will be taking place. After 3-4 weeks of alpha testing (all going well), it will "shut down" while the alpha group pow wows and finalizes up the numbers. The CU beta will begin, alas on the closed beta forums, and not in actual game play time. The programmers will need time to code in the changes/fixes, which would be an opportune time to get the beta invites up to speed and develop an understanding the new changes.

no prob... just making sure that you did realize it could be much much longer in the testing phase then most are thinking. Better to iron out the bugs first.

theres alot more to be taken from tyrants letter than just the CURB stuff....

look at the team designations- think about what kind of stuff each group is focusing on.

Actually I agree there. I'm interested in what new expansion might be heading our way. Maybe an expansion pack with new planets or maybe a new proffession or two a Mandolrian class (muhhahahaha). Yes thats what I need a character with built in bad attitude to swing my flamer around. The game has so much potential and so many ways it could be expanded. I hope they have some new stuff in the not so dstant future. You watch when May rolls around we may have the CU tehGCW revamps and aseparate expansion all marketed together. Well it maybe dreaming but hey .... it could happen i guess.

Well call me the super pessimist, but when I see all this great stuff happen then I'll be satisfied. Somewhat...

I will be angry, mad, and stubborn, til the CU comes live.
While still providing useful criticism of course.

Thought this would be of interest.
Over on f13.net, Raph and Calandryll have been discussing the changes with the jaded and cynical .
Calandryll posted this...

Heh. This isn't my design, guys! Remember, I haven't been on the SWG team for a year and a half now.

To add, I have to wonder - why is progression going sooooooooo painfully slow with SW:G? I mean the patches the EQ2 live team put out are just positively massive. Yet, from day 1, SW:G's team talk about a full combat revamp....and nothing happens. Straight answers on why, please?

Develoment on SWG has picked up pretty significantly in the last couple of months. We've had two big publishes this month already and we plan on updating publishes every two weeks. In addition to the TEF anc GCW changes, we're also adding veteran rewards, a group looting system, quests, a pretty big change to the UI (one that doesn't require the use of the "alt" key anymore), and of course combat upgrade.

The straight answer on CU is that it has gone through revision and some redirection. The previous versions simply didn't solve the problems we wanted to solve and didn't improve the core combat system as much as we wanted to. Anyime you make a significant change to an existing system (especially something like combat - that touches so many other systems) it takes longer than adding a new system from scratch. No arguement that combat upgrade has taken longer than we'd like. Hopefully we'll be posting the updated overview in the next few weeks.

I thought the bit of interest was the last line.
"Hopefully we'll be posting the updated overview in the next few weeks".
Now I assume the "revision and some redirection" was what came about last summer, for the most part. But then, the sandbox has been delayed due to tester review of the docs. So... is the current delay as a result of some high level “revision and some redirection”, as compared to what we saw in the Overview a couple of weeks ago, due to tester feedback?
So some fundamental changes, rather than small scale ones, which might explain the delay?

Or am I reading too much into this updated overview comment? Or was that already completely self-evident to everyone but me?

Guess Calandryll answered my question.

Although this is a little out of date (some of it is going to change) we did post an overview of the goals of the system...
