I've been a Commando for a good while now and I really am just wondering why they require Commando to reach unarmed 4. It todays game it does nothing to help us out in combat or defense, no skills or weapons require any use of melee. Warycry and intimadte are nice to have yes but I personally dont use them all that often as I try to stay away from solo PvP and if I cant kill it with my flamethrower to begin with I have no business attacking it. So really I'm just wondering why they are forcing us to give up those extra 29 skill points which may not seem like alot but in reality would help us a hell of alot more if put into a advanced ranged profession then that Unarmed tree ever can in its current state.

Really wild guess on the unarmed skill.
Is it possible that the dev's initial concept of a Commandowas designed as an artilleryman.
tht title used to apply toi theCommando tree.
Since anartillery manis not going to be right up close to the action that prof wouldn't need vey much in the way of melee defense; justsome ranged defenses.
It appears that the dev's development of Commmando included heavy weaponsleading to the flamer, the HAR and theother expendible weapons. Since the weapons where supposed to be used a long range the damage was notched up to accomidate the distance.
The LPis the hand gun for a heavy weapons specialist.
The dev's didn't count on our use of the commando heavy weapons in close uo fighting. The devs"balanced"(insert the word nerfed here) the weapon damage byrestricting the more damaging attacks to melee range which allowed the meleers tocompete with us on a more even battle ground.
I don't thik the devsunderstood thetactics playerwere usingand the devs certainly didn't take the use of buffs into consideration.
This is just a wild guess but maybe the Commandos from day one could explain it better.
I'd .like to se the unarmed changed to one-handed and get certiofied for a great big knife

Tworeasons, I think.
1) We're soldiers, essentially. Military basic training includes hand to hand combat.
2) It's a skill point sink. The devs were afraid that without that sink, we'd be too powerful. That's not the case, but it was a fear when the game was first launched, I believe.

Since it seems that the unarmed pre-req is rlly about who would rather use a knife or unarmed I like the idea of unarmed, and heres why. (Grant me here this is indeed a game, and indeed not quite up to spec even in that department) I just recently got out of the Army, and I was in Special Forces. Some would say we r the modern day commandos and others would differ but Im not tryin to argue that. SF relies just as much on fighting without their weapons (even without a knife) as they do on fighting with their weapons. I personnally think instead of subtracting the unarmed pre-req they should add the one handed swords line. Obviously this would not be liked because it means another what 14 SP to get MC. So, I know why its not their, but I dont think we should exchange the unarmed I think it fits the commando personality well... but also like I said some prefer the knife, others prefer unarmed so Im rlly saying I think they both fit...
Just replying to post above mine, dont mean to get this post off track

Currently, why the Unarmed Pre-Req? Well, the silly truth is because the Devs feel it give us a "a background story" and we need something "Extra" in there eyes to deserve the level of power they feel we are capable of...Now before that line get's flamed, trust me, I think that's all a total load too...
But as I've mentioned before, things are different within the CU...our unarmed pre-req WILL effect certain issues within the Commando trees AND will have an impact on the routes we go (dabbling) beyond Commando...yes, you read that right...our unarmed pre-req will have an effect in our post dabbling ESPECIALLY if we dabble other melee professions...Pre-Reqs are going to play a more important role in the future...
As I've told Tac on more then one occasions, our Unarmed pre-req currently doesn't make much sense pre-CU and it may feel wrong post-CU as well, but until the CU rolls out (or at least we get onto the Sandbox) it's going to be hard to justify any pre-req change...I can say that if we lose our unarmed pre-req and don't get ANY replacement for it, we WILL lose a huge part of what we are getting within the CU...we need to have those points spent somewhere...Being a combination of Melee and Ranged will be a huge PLUS for us Post CU...

Ok, so you are saying that this prereq will actually be a GOOD thing come CU? Hmmm, it sure would be great if we got an unarmed weapon too!!!

I'd be happy with any type of Melee Weapon, but an Unarmed one would make sense...
