When I decided to go commando, back in the first month of the game, I thought of it as a well balanced soldier. Master marksman and a little brawler as pre-reqs lead me to believe in it.

Now, I hear all these people say that we are no more than a support class that can use HWs. Personally I say we shouldnt have all the pre-reqs we do have if we are, but no less, if we are, I'm in the wrong profession.

I am online when there are not a lot of others, and I like to be a loner a lot of the time anyway, so if this is supposed to be a support profession, let me know so I can move on.

To clear things up, I realize that right now we seem like a support profession, but what I'm looking for is what should we be?

Indeed we have. And if we could just get an answer from someone who knows, not someones oppinion, maybe it could clear a lot up for us instead of hoping for commando to be what most of us hoped it would be.

To be honest, I'm not sure even the devs really know - and I'm afraid I wouldn't like their answer even if they did.

I get that impression too, maddogs. It's like with the heavy weapons they want us at range dropping bombs on people. But, with the FT they want us up close setting groups of people and pets on fire. Same with the 'nades, with those it appears the devs want us to incap ourselves, I mean, destroy large groups of people.

Ok, when I first bought the game, I looked at professions in the guidebook. Naturally I wanted a combat profession, and after seeing the Commando description, I knew that this profession was my vocation. In the guide it says, and I quote, "Commando: A hardened solider trained to use and craft heavy weapons. Requirements: Master Marksman (Marksman), Unarmed Specialist (Brawler), & Engineering Specialist (Artisian)."Well there you go. We are living the dream of the commando withtwo broken weapon lines, one soon to be nerfed, and one thatcosts quite a bit ofmoney per shot. Now it has become clear to me, and many months of playing SWG,that the Engineering idea never came through. I don't know why it didn't, so does anyone else out there? As to the original post, good question, I would like to know as well. We obviously don't live up to our various descriptions (In the game, it describes us as being anti-vehicular specialists. I still don't see the vehicles, other than speeder bikes, that im supposed to 'specialize' in destroying... AT-ST are out of the question, as I'm Imperial.) TH please help us figure out our role in the universe!

What i find most interesting is why the wrote a game guide on an early beta of a game.

I know someone that got the guide at launch, It was only really helpful in finding the elite trainers.

Anyway, I was firing an Acid launcher at a giant canyon krayt yesterday while I had some other guys keeping it busy and bufffs to continuously do it. No, they are not vulnerable to acid, I just happened to have one on me for the hell of it so I used it.

When I used it, I realized that if they focus on these HWs as being our main thing, we definately will be a support profession. It seemed like it refired faste enough, but the animation of putting down the FT, pulling out the HW, kneeling, then popping it off, then puting it away and picking the FT back up was long enough.

Thats what made me concerned. I dont want to just be some HW jockey.

Aye techno, when i read the manual and later on the in-game description of the weapons and tools avaliable I thought the commando was going to be a competent gun user with access to heavy weaponry (in which the class excelled in). In short, someone who could hold his own for a while in a gunfight (but not exactly win in a gunfight vs the specialized gun proffessions), could hold his own in melee for a while (but again, not win it) but who excelled in the heavy area blast effect weaponry and single target high frontloaded damage fighting class that had access to all damage types in the game.

Sort of like a 'medium' tank with 'high damage aoe' weapons but with slow firing rate.

And frankly, if SOE:

-Triples the grenade accuracy mods and makes their ideal range 10m more than it is (aka ideal now=12m, after=22 .. so you can throw them and hit without incap'ing yourself)

-Adds state effect (aoe) to the grenades

-Moves theFT DOT to master

-Fixes the HAR mods and makes itbe AP2

-Adds thebeam rifle (switched to stun damage)

-Adds +30 pistol/rifle/carbine accuracy,+10 pistol/rifle/carbine speed spread in the field tactics tree (so we can use our marksman weapons more competently, but we still use the marksman specials)

-Adds a couple of launcher pistol specials (in box4 of field tactics and master box)

-Adds +100 unarmed speed spread throught all box4's (so we can use the unarmed tree specials to put stun and blind effects.. not do damage with them but just put the effects, and it wont overpower tka's since the damage is **edit**ty and a tka at powerbox3 and 4 already swing once per second for all purposes)

-Changes the shoulder heavy weapons to be of much higher damage (but of higher refire delay)

-Adds a 30 second single target warcry effect, no damage dealing 'Ion Cannon' so we can use it against atsts and other vehicles/buildings

THEN the commando will truly fit my view of what a commando should be.

'Foolish boy. Don't you know anything about Fantasia? It's the world of human fantasy. Every part, every creature of it, is a piece of the dreams and hopes of mankind. Therefor, it has no boundaries.'
'But why is Fantasia dying then?'
'Because people have begun to loose their hopes and forget their dreams. So the nothing grows stronger. It's the emptiness that's left. It's like a despair, destroying this world. And I have been trying to help it.'
'But why?'
'Because people who have no hopes are easy to control. And whoever has control has the power'

I would be happy with that Tac if they go that way. But if they dont and just focus us towards only HWs, I'm thinking BH might be more of what I'm looking for. The reason I didnt go BH befor is because I see the scout tree and think ok, should be like commando, but instead of heavy frontloaded damage, they should have more accuracy, and speed mods for the marksmna weapons, and they do, but also be able to use traps and poison darts along with tracking on humanoid characters. I chose the heavy hitter combatant over presision attaks, which is turning out not to be the case.

Webster's defines commando as:

a) A small raiding force trained to operate inside enemy territory.

b) A member of such a group

(and here I thought it meant not wearing any underwear ) If a girl says, "I'm going commando today..." /Salute.

Anyway, back on topic, I would seem to think that a commando, as defined by webster, is more of a soloist or a fighter than a support class. Aren't green berets and shadow cats considered commandos ? I believe that commando was very powerful in beta and nerfed prelaunchaccording to the strategy guide (which is good to merely chart progress or intent) and the posts of others from beta. Since then they don't know what to think of us. Personally I believe commandos should be the ultimate combat class (I know I'm biased.)

It takes more than one type of soldier (or character) to win a war.

For straight combat, I think commandos should be the most well rounded (defense, accuracy ranges) but not the best. Commando should be a desired class above using a flame thrower... Right now we are the heavy weapon specialists. We are supposed to be the ones to take out turrets on bases, have high damage AOE effects (grenades), and let's not forget our defining weapon - the flame thrower.

A huge wish list has come out for fixes to commando and I agree with almost every one of them. Mainly, we need to start looking toward combat (especially solo) and less toward support. Either that or change the class name...
