Thread: What possible role can commandos have in SWG without upsetting balance??

Starnick's ok...
It's too long you need a 1 sylable (sp) name
Yes but after 2 years of comatose GCW, isn't an ambitious expansion exactly what the doctor ordered?

I could see something like that being the focus ofsome sort of ambitious expansion, but don't get your hopes up.
Heh, it would be cool, though
This would be awesome...especially if we could get our hands on turretts. Commandos should have bonuses when using turrets period.
I fought in a battlefield once
it was fun...
but then again that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away...
anyway I do not htink adding battlefield BACK into game should be an expansion as they were supposed to be an original part of the game anyway!!
Bring back the battlefields!
The good old days
Basically I see an intertwined problem. The GCW is supposed to be the dominant theme in this game, permeating every facet of the game and the ingame atmosphere. But it is in fact the opposite, more of a token novelty that few engage in beyond grinding for a title or an ATST. Then you have 2 combat professions Squad Leader and Commando that have never been implemented into the game in any fashion that makes them desirable or useful.
I think most, if not all, of us became commandos because we are attracted to the concept of the commando, not because of any in game benefit that we would like to bring to the table in a group or combat setting. I wonder how much the commando and SL population would drop if they were not required to destroy bases?
Anyway, the SL defeciencies are a topic for that forum, and the Commando really has no way to be what the devs said it would be without disrupting post CU balance (yes I know we are far below, much less balanced). How can we be the prime damage dealing profession in the game and yet be AoE heavy? How can we not be AoE specialists, yetpowerful, and be any different from a rifleman or carbineer? If we get the damage but no AoE thats exactly what we are. If we get the AoE but no damage output then we are where we find ourselves right now (even after current bugs are fixed).
So in order to fulfill the vision that the devs promoted for the post-CU Commando, we need not only the AoE (unbugged variety too i might add), but we need the heavy damage output.
That would wreck any balance with other professions and we would see nothing but Master Commando BH's everywhere. That obviously isnt the solution. So I believe that the way all Commandos feel we are supposed to be, can never be implemented properly into the game's current system without rampant abuse and loss of balance.
So back to the battlefields, there exists the forgotten theater for the GCW drama to play itself out on. A space, seperated from the rest of the server that is designed for the sole purpose of empire and rebel clashes. Where better to give the Commando the proper abilities he deserves. Commandos should be feared. What if you saw some punk high school kid beat a Navy SEAL's @$$ in a fight? Sure it is balanced, but come on, it's just dumb to even allow to happen.
So I feel by making professions that have no way to really be true to their concept in current gameplay (SL and Commando) able to sway combat in a medium that does not wreck the balance of the game overall. Then Commandos and SL's can finally have a defined role in the game, which they currently do not.
With a battlefield system set up in a manner similar to my proposal, the Commando and SL professions will be defined as the two professions who have the capabilities to sway GCW conflicts into their sides favor on the battlefield.
The battlefield will have its limited role in the overall balance of the game therefore curbing the imbalance that SL and Commandos bring to battle. That way no matter how dominant they become in the battlefield system, theywon't be able todo game changing damage even remotely approaching the damage done by past imbalances (KD attackers, jedi, MCH's). They will retain their relative balance to other professions outside the battlefield and can still take part in group gameplay or solo to the best of their template's abilities.
Taking up theCommando or SLprofession would be a sign of a players desire to do their best work on the battlefield, where they shine like a TKM shines as a tank off of the battlefield, like a rifleman shines as a heavy hitter off of the battlefield, like a BH shines as an all around combatant off the battlefield, etc etc.
Anyway, I am getting long winded, but I think the core problem here is there is nothing that defines Commandos or Squad Leaders roles in the game, and if we saw a battlefield system like the one I have linked in my top post, there would be opportunity for the classes to be well defined and more importantly......fun to play.

Battlefields should help all professions further define their roles, but it shouldn't be "the defining" role for any one profession. SL and Commando with its AoE capabilities should shine in large scale PvP, but it cannot be limited to it (the game is bigger than just battlefields)

Just a small comment on my part:
