Thread: Issues With the Heavy Acid Rifle

Since this question comes up a lot (What's wrong with the HAR?), I thought I'd make a post that I could sticky at the top for visitors and New Commandos to read. Feel free to adding any HAR issues if I missed any...


Problems with the Heavy Acid Rifle (HAR):



  • On average (non-special) it does around 100 less damage then the FT.
  • On average (non-special) the weapon is slower then the FT by around .7 in speed
  • The specials of the HAR are identical to the specials of the FT yet they are significantly weaker
  • The HAR has a significantly higher HAM cost then the FT
  • The HAR shares the same restrictions as the FT (range and delay on specials)
  • The HAR has no DoT on any of it's specials
  • Most high level NPC's with high Heat resists also have high Acid Resists
  • TheAcid Tree costs moreXP then the Flame Tree
  • Like the FT, the HAR has no AP
  • Can not use typical "Rifle" specials with this weapon

With all that being said, what you end up with is a weapon that is only really useful when fighting an opponent with High Heat resists but low Acid resists, which doesn't come up very often. Since that is strategically the only time to use the HAR, it definitely does not warrent it's own tree and does not deserve the higher xp cost. It's basically a weaker clone of the FT, sharing the same penalties, but not delivering as it should.


The HAR could be improved with AP andranged specials...And since it is a Rifle, it would be nice to be able to use rifle specials with this weapon. Basically, when it's all said and done, we focus on the Flame Thrower so much because SWG hasn't given us a good reason to focus on the HAR.


I hope that helps...When it comes down to it...it's a special case used weapon...nice to have, but not worthy of everyday, every situation use...

Easy Fixes


Give AP3
Make them faster, by default
Give a Acid Burn Dot
Give it unique specials

As a rifleman, I say allow rifle specials to work on it.


As a SWG player, I say a weapon that has around 1000 max damage after slice whileusing the master rifle specials would make it game breaking.


Other than that point, I agree completely.

I say give it medium AP


Not too much of an increase but not too little. We need an AP gun anyway



And if not that, just replace it with a new weapon

I think combining the lines would be best....but if they aren't going to do that...I would suggest giving the HAR an action dot, very similar to the flame dot. They made fire blankets insanely good...making the FT a joke in PVP if there is a doctor around. (the FT has no AP....so the initial damage was a joke to begin with)


They take, take, and take more from our beloved profession....but they need to add to it. The way I see a commando.....I picture Rambo. Can anyone else see us hopping walls with a knife clenched in our teeth....laughing inside because we're about to get the drop on enemy troops that don't see it coming?

Along to the lines of what I was telling ya about last night....


The HAR does not to seem to have benefitted at all from that "increase" of base damage....against an Acid Vuln creature...with a 350-730 something HAR (mind you again..thats just like 100 dmg less..)...i was hitting avg of 2k...max was 4k....meanwhile I do believe the creature had some heat resists...and I was hitting the bloody thing for 6-9k! (not all went thru of course...but the base IS still significantly higher..when the damage is only a mere 100 higher)


Edit: btw thats using Acid Single 2...

I've been trying to like the Acid rifle, my 919 max dmg acid still doesn't do as much damage (2500+ dmg) in special as my 840 max dmg FT does (7200+ dmg), even I have a 3.3 speed sliced FT over a 4.3 speed sliced Acid, the Acid tree simply isn't worth it unless you face targets with no acid resists (Geonosian cave) and even then you're screwed with slow attack speeds.

agreed...it is truly a broken weapon...last night I got a big chance to finally test it heavily


and it failed dismally....against Acid Vuln targets..it was barely scratching them!!!!

I just re-mastered Commando last night and was revisiting the idea that yes the HAR does suck at the moment. I would love to see the rifle specials being able to be used just like the pistol specials work with the RLP. Speed leaves much to be desired...have it equal or come real close to the FT. I think acid is much more volatile than fire. As it stands, I agree, why should Weaponsmiths even make these? Oh and AP wouldn't be a bad idea either...last time I checked...metal and flesh (and most other stuff) have a hard time staying acid.

Well back from a little test i did last December, going against Grauls on Dantooine. The have a high Heat Resist, but a Vulnerability to Acid. So after seeing that i pulled out my HAR, and with the help of some others, we took on some grauls, but the xp didn't look right, so i switched back to the Flame Thrower, and checked the damage numbers. And even with the grauls high heat resist i was hitting them harder with the flame thrower and getting more xp per kill than i could with the HAR.

Now I have no idea if that holds true still now, and the only way to find out is thru testing. Right off hand I know of two mobs that have high heat resists and either low acid resist or acid vulnerability and thats Grauls and Tuskans. But i imagine there are other mobs out there to try this on.



And in closing, screw hunting Jedi, i'm coming back to my first love Commando, even though the profession is still gimped. I still had more fun as a Commando than anything else.

I think the HAR needs some form of AP....preferably AP3....Seems the masters of the "Heavy weapons" take it in the shorts while a Rifleman can solo a giant canyon krayt dragon....what kinda crap is that....If the dev's don't want it to be ap3, then delete the dumb thing and give us the Eweb already. Commando's are the heavy weapons specialists, shouldn't they have something that is a "heavy weapon"???
