Ok, was able to interrog...err.."ask", the brawler corrospondent about his experiences with seeing commando play out. So far, I've only heard good things:

Concerns about "cookiee-cutter" Commandos:

  • Specialization is defined by the equipment you prefer to use. This will make each commando different and not a cookie cutter of each other.

  • Weapons and abilities:

  • Base busting weapons were discussed, but not use as far as I was concerned. As I opted toward my type of playstyle. [Melee Commando]

  • You can do any of the weapons stuff. So if you decide you wanna be a ranged or heavey weapon commando later, you can switch with no problems.

  • Also almost all specials are not weapon specific that I got to try. They can be used with any weapon.

  • There will be Specific weapons (melee, heavy, nade) that only a commando can use.

  • Reactions:

  • Commando rocked, I pretty much expected it to be your gritty grunt type soldier, and it was...

    Totally awesome.

  • I played a melee commando (duh). I had fun. The first few specials were really cool. I don't really wanna ruin it for anyone. I want you all to try it and see.

  • So far, all I have been able to get that is not general knowledge doled out by Tiggs/TH/Julio...a lot more to come soon, especially tomarrow when this hits TC. Ill have a focus thread up tomarrow.

Since I'm at work all day today and probably won't get a chance to get on TC tonight or tomorrow, I have a few questions about the two things I highlighted.

The two statements seem to contradict each other. As a current Commando/Carbineer, I switch from heavy weapons to carbs to fit the situation. I prefer having both types of weapons at my disposal and really has a grunt feel to it. What I don't get is how that specialization thing comes into play (first item) with having to switch from ranged to heavy weapons (second item). Does that mean I have to choose if I want to only use my flamethrower then regrind if I want to use carbines or can I still switch on the fly from one to the other without penalty? Are we stuck with only using heavy weapons or carbines or rifles, or can we pick up a pistol and use it if needed?

This isn't a very player friendly system if it's "Oh sorry, you can't use two different types of weapons. Choose one type and destroy the others.". It's already unfriendly since it takes away individuality and flexibility (like Dancer/Armorsmith or Pikeman/Musician) and seems like all we are going to be is the same professions with different skins. I'm going to give it a chance but sacrificing the one outstanding core element of the game is very disheartning. I just hope they wake up and smell the coffee on this one, before the mass cancellations of hybrid players causes this game to collapse.

Im taking it as a "the weapons define specialization" rather than skills you can pick-up/drop. For example:

You want to specialize in demolitions...you would then use dominantly demolition-style tactics or weapons. If you want to specialize more in melee, you would use more melee weapons w/ your abilities. Sorta like how "do you want to be a long-range commando with non fireDoTs/no AoE?" or "do you want to be a short ranged commando with fire Dots/AoE?", you can pick one or the other based off of the weapon you're using.

Of course, that is my theory on what the brawler corro ment by what he said.

    Star,

The artisan correspondent posted in the NGE forums that they 'squished' all crafter proffs into one.

If this is the same for commando then it would mean that all ranged and melee proffessions got compressed.

I think it will be like:

    Commando (starting proff)

    Specializations:

    Melee (fencer/tkasi like skills)

Ranged techniques1 (literally the 'effects' specials of pistoleer and carbineer)

    ranged techniques2 (damage/accuracy abilities of rifleman/carbineer)

    explosives (grenades and heavy weapons)

    or something like that.

and we would be able to use a combination of those skills to create our own chars in the upcoming kiddieclickfest upgrade.

and I think smuggler and spy will have similar melee/rangedtechniques skillbranches perhaps more geared towards debuff-typeeffects than commando (which may begeared more towards COMBAT type effects like stun andintimidate)

BH wil probably have pure ranged technique skills and one branch of bountyhunting abilities/stuff.

I dont particularly dislike them remodeling the proffessions like this but... making it be click-oriented? my god put the locks on the doors and shut the windows, I see a stampede of 8 year olds coming in to a game dumbed down to their level. x-box/playstation players also coming up in the horizon too.

'But why is Fantasia dying then?'
'Because people have begun to loose their hopes and forget their dreams. So the nothing grows stronger. It's the emptiness that's left. It's like a despair, destroying this world. And I have been trying to help it.'
    'But why?'
'Because people who have no hopes are easy to control. And whoever has control has the power'

Maybe tac (another theory Im thinking of too, where we can pick specializations via sub-skills...something I think WoW has right?), but theres awfully a lot of talk with "going with a melee aspect with weapons, but not trying the ranged aspect" and how abilities stay the same, it's just the weapons that are different.

Think about it too, a melee commando...and you're stuck at it for the life of your character too. TH mentioned that they wanted it where you could engage range, then whap (to paraphrase) your enemy if you guys get too close in a street alley for example. More "realistic" was the term he used, as real combat folks aren't restricted to just shooting a gun...

He's right and that does make sense; but atm with the limited info Im taking it as a system where the weapons define a major aspect of skills, like how it is with us. Also, NGE isn't up on TC yet...I guess this is the biggest question of the day that I'll look forward to seeing the answer =)

    Edit:

BH wil probably have pure ranged technique skills and one branch of bountyhunting abilities/stuff.

BH are getting melee stuff too. In fact, Tiggs earlier mentioned that ALL combat profs can perform melee abilities. Most likely certain profs can do melee better, or ranged better or have a specific role/etc. Maybe theres a specialization system that we don't know yet; maybe it's weapon-based...we'll see.

Ok, I think I get it. It's sounding a lot like Elder Scrolls III weapons usage and experience gains. If so, that'll actually pan out to truely make Commando A different than Commando B and retain the individuality of the characters.

I have one other question, although I'm not sure you have the info on it yet, regarding armor. Been seeing some conflicting posts about armor certification and while the list TH put out should have cleared it up, but has made a bigger mess. Commando is cert'ed for assault armor in the NGE and I don't have a problem with that. The problem lies with our Katarn Armor. It's classified as battle armor and as of now Carbineer is one of the professions able to wear it. If Commando gets assault cert only and we have no other way to get cert'ed for other armor, the bio-linked Katarn Armor becomes a wall decoration. I do enjoy wearing it with the mearine armor backpack and sporting a PFT in combat. Is there any word on how these will convert or if the Dev team is reconsidering the armor cert's bassed on class?

I know it's a tough question but it's been burning in the back of my mind all day and I had to ask. Regardless of the answer, thanks for taking the time to look into our questions. I'm just glad I took the chance to play as commando before the NGE. Once I picked up that PFT, I was hooked for life.

Some food for thought on the skills side of things for this new system:

-Progression through a class will be linear

-Only one type of combat exp now

-Experience will come largely from questing through a professional story arc

What this says to me is that, in terms of skill pool, all commandos will be the same, unless they add some sort of talent system sort of thing or specialization options. From what I can tell, the days of choosing certain trees of a class to take are over.

Now, given what a broad pool of skills commandos have been given, it seems to me that the breadth of this pool is intentional. It means that instead of your character's "skills" defining who you are, you do. You've got a whole arsenal of abilities to work with, but not everyone will use that arsenal in the same way every time.

For a sort of analogy, think of first person shooters. Everyone has their weapon of choice (though, inevitably, some are more favored than others). Some people prefer the challenge of getting up close and personal with a combat knife, while others like to sit way back with a rifle and take potshots at someone. Others still like charging in with a blaze of glory. What I think this new system means is that we'll have the flexibility to do all of this within the profession, without ever having to regrind everything.

Perhaos it's just me, but I actually see this as being a really cool thing. Players would now become more known for how they, as a player, use their class, rather than purely based on what class combos and skillpoints they have.
