Thread: DOTs? just how good are they ?
PvE .. vs lvl 21 mob no armor ..
Hit shock ... kd .... fire ... Fire landed for 299 damage .
Hit shock .. kd ... poison ... landed for 241 damage ...
Hit shock .... kd ... disease ... cant tell what damage doesnt report in combat spam.
Converting this to PVP == hardly anything to make CM a force to fear..
I think they went a little too far with toning down DOT's ... I'm not asking for uber dots over 1K etc... thats just silly...
But seeing as we only damage per TICK ... we should at least be on par with a other combat profession... for PVE at least?
I would say bump up the damage to 500 on poison ... maybe 550 on Fire ... for CM to be viable ... otherwise might as well pick up a gun and do 1.8k damge in less time.
Thoughts?

Our DoTs are quite pitiful I have to admit...
I still stack them out of habit but - to be honest - if I just debuffed and then used my pistol the mob would die a lot faster - and my CM only has Pistols 0040 ![]()
In PvP they're not much use at all unless it's to annoy people in mass combat ![]()

I can stack a Fire dot for around 250-300 with a 1050 enhancer and a 250-300 Poison dot with an 1150 enhancer in PvP. The disease is kinda worthless, I tested with a friend monitoring his health, and it only did about 3 wounds per tick and not actual damage. That alone is 500-600 damage per tick with just those 2. Now I'm also a MBH and have a bleed so I get 700-900 free damage every few seconds.
I understand this .. but your missing out on one vital thing .. your not getting free bleeds here .. this is at the cost of attack rounds ..
Those attack rounds you used to apply that damage dot you could have been adv critical or head shotting for 3x the damage ...
In pvp each attack round / timer has to be used in the most effective way ...
I just don't see CM as coming on par with other combat classes in usefulness of DOT's vs using a weapon equiped.
I'd rather use my attack rounds dishing out damage with a Carb or something than using them throwing a DOT.
Thats sort of what I'm trying to say here and why I think a slight increase in effectivness of DOT's in PVP would help. Again I'm not asking for much ... just a little tweeking up to bring us in line..
Anyone else agree ?
Let me also QFE....

Combat Medic
Primary Role: Medical Combatant
Secondary Role: Combat Healing
Offense: Strong (4)
Defense: Weak (2)
Crowd Control: Moderate (3)

Note offense == strong 4 ... I feel this is not where CM is at right now.

Actually the first hit (if it sticks) does damage on impact. I don't think the "lost attack round" isn't wasted since your doing damage. I don't know the damage differences between bleed and just a deut toss. Maybe someone can chime in with the answer.
When you shoot using a bleed special how much damage are you applying on that initial shot. I'm interested in 4 numbers.
The total damage on the first bleed shot.
The bleed damage only on first shot (if there's a distinction.).
the shot damage only (if there's a distinction.).
overall DOT. If it's different than the initial shot.
If I misinterpreted what you meant... sorry
I've had good success in damagine with DOTs & no other damage until the final deathshot.
they aren't as useful when attacking regular creatures but on kimos and other hi level NPC's. They do a good job. I'd like more of course but I think it's adequate now.
1 more thing to keep in mind is that all of your specials now work on droids as well so we aren't as useless in DWB or the Corvette. which I for one am very thankful of.

I see your point .. let me explain what I ment by wasted shot ...choice one which shot to take ...
I cna decided say 2 options ...
1. Hit with a shot for 1900 damage with improved leg shot with my carb.
2. Throw a fire DOT for 299 damage. (assuming shock and KD is in place)
Why would I want to throw fire ? and not take the carb shot instead?
Well I guess you can argue I get 5 ticks at 299 damage so 1495 damage over time ... that equates to just less that one high damage shot.
So if I do ... 1 x fire + 4 x 1600 shots (1600 to average out alternating improved leg shot and adv rapid fire shot) over 5 rounds ... == (5 x 299 + 4x 1600) = 1495 + 6400 = 7895
Apposed to 5 x 1600 shots in 5 rounds == 8000
This is assuming that a tick == 1 round ... which I'm sure it does not , so it would take more rounds to equate to the same damage delt over time using a weapon.
Really you have no point in using CM DOT's for that combat round .. it gains you nothing when you could choose to hit with a carb / rifle / pistol / whatever that round instead of a DOT.
CM really isnt a major offensive force ranked 4 (strong) incomparrision to weapon based professions also ranked as 4 in offense. This is the whole bases of my suggestion is that they rated CM as 4 in offense. I do not think this is accurate for where we are right now comparitivley.

i think they wanted cm's role to be more support: debuffs (come on, a 2 minute snare is AWESOME), heals, rez and less damage
Also agreed ... I do not really think we have that much to offer in the game ... Doc basically do what we can ... DOT's as I said above .. really it's better to use a high dmaage weapon for offense .. so we lose out on both worlds here ...
CM's needs to have it's signiture abilities enhanced to give us more purpose to use our skills... sure area heals are about the only think really worth having CM as support for ... that other professions do not have at all in there skill set.
so dot's .. area heals ... and debuffs should be given more attention as this is what makes CM ... CM.

okay so this is how it works now....
every jedi and thier mom went jedi defender, thats obvious, me with my krayted pistol and body shot can only hit a defender template for around 150 dmg.. pretty pathetic i know, but if i DOT them, theres no reducing that, so if i can stall and they don't have cure state, thats the only way i'm gonna beat a full defender temp. And before you flame realize that this sith had gone 6 vs 1 against jedi a few minutes earlier and got a stalemate.
In normal pvp, DOTs are killers, concussion shot, poison, fire, then warning shot, intimidate, and spam body shot, this does my normal 700-1100 dmg every shot + around 600 tick DOT which keeps on ticking even if i run outta action. DOTs still own pvp, ya just gotta know how to use them, CM is now a thinking person's class, no more /duel everyone, /chuck uber 1k mind poison, /i-win.
I think your right.
If we all come to terms in agreeing with your assertion It'd be really nice to get clarification from devs.
Our crowd control and
If we agree collectively that the damage output & overall debuff states don't do as much as we'd like.. Then It would be really nice to get a response from dev on their take on it. Where it is now and what we have to look forward to. perhaps this is something our Correspondant can help with.
I've always thought that using our debuffs and DOT's helped against hi level mobs. From what I'm reading though applying 2 DOT's is not nearly as effective as firing a shot 2 times. or collectively the damage from the DOT isn't close to the damage total on of exclusive pistol shots for example.
I just thought about this though.
I'm a jedi & when I'm attacked by BHs I am constantly healing. At that rate it becomes very difficult to be offensive. Same can be said for my alt MCM when he's attacking hi level mobs.
DOT's allow a form of passive offense which has enabled me to heal while damage is still occuring to the opponent (NPC or PVP). There is no way I could attempt to be on the offensive with close to 1/4 - 1/2 of my health drained every time I get hit. They can heal 1 or 2 hits from me but collectively my DOT's give me a much better chance.
I'm not disagreeing with you but do think my comment above has some validity as well.
Well, I was aboslutely dead -set against the very function on CMs in the game pre-CU. I hated the way DoTs worked, and all that.
However, having been a Bh for years, I find that CM dots are stunning for occupying jedi. I love still ticking 600+ damage off while I am healing myself. I believe the offens of four comes not so much from the nuker style rifleman bombs they drop, but more from the fact that our damage is constant, unrelenting, and difficult to stop. With enhancers and shock, I have not had a dot fail that I noticed. I expect several have, but by and large,I hit the button, and a new state pops up on the opponent. I believe that is where our power lies. If any of you play warhammer fanatsy, I liken our offense to Tomb King magic. Steady and relelntless, but not showy or devastating.
