I leanred that the best setup i like to use is follow and assist. I have a section of my macros F9-F12 being combat healing.

F9 Stimpak
F10 Assist
F11 Follow
F12 Stop follow

THis way during combat i keep my hands on those 4, mostly 3 keys, F9-F11. This is what i do. I keep my eye on the party HAM bars on the left side of ur screen. When ever someone needs healing. I click on their name in the party window, that will select them. Then i hit F11 to follow them, this will run me towards them, no matter where they r. And u guesstimate when u get into 6m range and hit the F9, Stimpak. By the time u get there, u pop a heal on them. Now i can select a party member and hit F10 to assist, so i will attack the same target he is attacking. Since i dont target anything. I just attack the same target that my party members r fighting. I mean i'm not out there to kill things. Fighting is bonus xp, for Combat Medic, one day....

This way, i never have to target a enemy, and i barely have to see the map or where my group members r. I just click name, follow and heal. I assume with combat medic, i can click name and shoot stimpak. So... this should work out.

I fight and heal all the time as well. You can't do a special if you have a group member targeted for a heal or it just clears out of the queue. However, you can target a mob, do a special, switch to a group member, heal and then repeat. I'm almost at Combat Medic with a Pistol and it's quite easy to fight in a group this way and still get good combat exp. I even help with crowd control.

Sometimes i have noticed a 2-3 sometimes 4 second wait healing while auto shooting. What i have done is setup a macro for /peace;/healdamage;/assist. when it is life or death that way heal goes off instantly rather waiting the few seconds

/peace can speed up heals with auto-shoot by a sec or too..i just think its a pain in the butt to /peace out of combat all the time...i just calculate lag into my timing when healing some1

As Elenora says, the heal does go into your queue, this is something that should be fixed though, in that we should be able to see it. Now whichever enemy your are targetting when you use specials is the one who is hit with the special when it comes up on queue, but with heals it's a little different. When you queue up the heal, it has no target until it goes off, at which point it will heal whoever you have targetted. If your target is the enemy you're firing upon it will heal yourself, if your target is a friend it heals them, if your target is an enemy you're not firing on, a building, a corpse, etc. it will just mess up and say "you can't heal that." or whatever. That may be where you had your problems healing during combat. I never use /peace, it may work for some people but it seems like a waste of time to me. I'd instead recommend finding a weapon with a speed similar to that of the time between your mid combat heals. This way you can fire between shots effectively. Additionally I prefer to tank, because it's easier to special and heal at the same time when I'm not switching targets like crazy.

Hope that helps whoever had the initial question, Novice Combat Medic, Novice Doctor, Novice Gunfighter and that's what's worked for me so far.

Yeah I think Zerbean just doesn't posess the intelligence required to time attacks and heals. Peace is not needed at all. I fight solo all the time and have no trouble dealing with the enemy and keeping myself healed up. Another tip for newer medics is you can target 2 things at a time. While you are engaged with a baddie you can also have your ally targeted for heals. You also have to play everything by ear. Don't hit a bunch of buttons at once, rather use attacks and heals as needed instead of programming 4 or 5 things. A good combat medic can also see what is going to be happening and who is hurt long before it happens. I usually try to look at least 1 or 2 full minutes ahead so that I can determine priorities. Call is a combat 6th sense if you will.

I've found something that works well... at least for my play style. At the moment I'm 100% focused on medical expo.. anything else is secondary. If we pull more then 1 mob I don't attack anything.. plain and simple. The heals are nearly instant, no one dies, everyone is happy. If we get 1 mob I'll use my pistol but NEVER use any special attacks. I find that loading up the queue with specials only confuses the timing. With nothing in the queue and on auto attack the timing is very predictable.

I noticed that how fast you fire your heal off depends on speed of the weapon used.
Here is the test I ran:
I equiped slow (7sec rifle) and attacked a mob, without special moves delay between I clicked "heal" button and the heal was applied was anywhere between 1s and 6s (and quite visible)
Then I equiped carabine (3.2sec) and attacked same kind of mob.
Without special moves delay was 1s to 3s (and never more then 3s).

I did tests without special moves because they appear to delay healing, so I always clear them out of the queue when it's time to heal

That once again proved to me that carabine and pistol are preffered medic weapons, not rifles.

Wow, you know... That makes sense about the weapon speed. I never really thought about it because I'm a pistol user. But I have wondered often why I don't experience huge delays in my healing like some of the other folks are talking about.

I use a 1.9spd sliced Scout Blaster. Now after realizing its relationship to healing, I'm even more in love with it.

I stand corrected, after lots of screwin around, i noticed you CAN heal while firing, and I aplogize for making that stupid assumption. It just takes forever, and is annoying to do.

And by going rifle as medic... I ment you wont have to buff your strength or quickness because using special attacks from your rifle skill drains from your mind pool. You can have strength and quickless as low as they can go, and use those extra skill points more efficiently in other areas.

if you need to get a heal off asap you can try clearing out your combat queue, works like a charm...

Yeah, what Stimaddict said.

Healing goes into your combat queue even though it doesn't show and action icon for it. If you want a heal to be your next move clear the combat queue.

One thing though is that you can't queue heals back to back. You've got to leave enough time for your heal again timer to reset. When I'm soloing my combat queue goes something like this:

/(special attack)

/(special attack)

/healdamage self

/(special attack)

/(special attack)

/healdamage self

etc...

You could do the same thing forwhen you're in groups. Just change the /healdamage self to /healdamage groupmember1.
